Dermatologist asked MLAs to roll up their sleeves Wednesday at an annual skin-cancer screening event at the Alberta Legislature.
The Canadian Dermatology Association asked MLAs and other government workers to roll up their sleeves as part of a screening yesterday.
Dr. Mariusz Sapijasko said skin cancer screenings like these can detect problems early before they become costly to the health care system and potentially lethal to the patient.
?Skin cancer is the number one cancer in Albertans, as a matter of fact one in three of all cancers is skin cancers,? he said. ?It is a highly preventable form of cancer and a highly curable type if treated early.?
Sapijasko said while skin cancer from the sun?s rays may not have be high on people?s minds it is a year-round concern. ?When they go downhill sking, cross country skiing and other winter activities there is a reflection off of the snow,? he said, adding that many Albertans are likely headed south on vacation soon.
The association held the event at the legislature in part to encourage the government to introduce legislation that would ban minors from tanning beds.
