MOSCOW (AP) -Three stadiums in Moscow will host some 2018 World Cup games, among the dozen arenas finalized by FIFA on Saturday for the first cup in Russia.

The centerpiece will be Moscow's 89,000-seat Luzhniki Stadium, which hosted the Champions League final in 2008. Work on redeveloping it is due for completion in 2016.

Among the 11 cities to host matches are St. Petersburg, and the Black Sea city of Sochi to the south.

FIFA President Sepp Blatter said at the venue announcement that Russia's preparations were ahead of schedule.

Truth be told, I never thought much about lemons as it relates to health. I think of lemon as a way to keep drinking water from getting boring. I also use it to flavor pasta dishes and spinach. I do not buy lemons on a regular basis because I never thought of it as much more than a little flavoring. I suppose by now I should not be surprised that every natural food has health benefits. As a Christian, I attribute that to God's love for us as he provides healing foods. Now, that I have researched more on lemons I won't be passing them up anymore.

It is also said to hydrate better than water alone. So, if you are going on a long walk or working out add a little lemon to your water bottle to keep hydrated and less fatigued.

Lemon is also known as a pain reliever. It has been said to drink the juice of one lemon in a glass of lukewarm water two to three times a day to relive pain. Lemons help inhibit inflammation which is the cause of many types of pain. You can also mix a few drops of lemon oil with jojoba oil and rub on affected joints for relief.

Drinking the juice of one fresh squeezed lemon in a glass of lukewarm water after meals will stimulate stomach acid and stomach muscles which aids in digestion.

Why there is an Electoral College and how it works

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Presidents are elected not by national popular vote but by an 18th century constitutional compromise called the Electoral College.

HOW IT FORMED:

When framers were drafting the U.S. Constitution, there were two competing ideas on how to elect the president. One group said Congress should do it; the other said it should be a national vote of eligible citizens. There also were disputes over how much slaves should count in representation in Congress and over how power would be distributed between small and large states.

The compromise became part of the second article of the Constitution, although the words "Electoral College" are not included. The electors pick the president and vice president.

VOTE TOTALS

Each state gets one electoral vote for each of its representatives in the House and Senate. The District of Columbia gets three votes. All told, there are 538 votes in the Electoral College. A candidate must have at least 270 to win.

Except for Maine and Nebraska, states award all their electoral votes to the candidate who wins the state. In Maine and Nebraska, votes are apportioned by congressional districts. So in 2008, even though John McCain won Nebraska's statewide popular vote, Barack Obama won the 2nd Congressional District and earned one of the state's five electoral votes.

HOW IT WORKS

Each state's electors will meet on Dec. 17 in their home states and cast their votes for president and vice president. Congress will meet on Jan. 6, 2013, to conduct an official tally of the electoral votes. Vice President Joe Biden will preside and declare the winner.

PROBLEM AREAS

If no candidate gets at least 270 electoral votes, the election goes to the newly elected House of Representatives. Each state delegation in the House gets one vote, and a candidate must win a majority of the states to be elected president. This happened in 1824, when Andrew Jackson won the most popular votes and the most electoral votes, but four candidates split the electoral votes and no one received a majority. The race went to the House and John Quincy Adams, who came in second, was chosen as president.

Three other times, candidates won the Electoral College even though they lost the popular vote ? in 1876, 1888, and 2000.

HP Envy 23-1050t

The HP Envy 23-1050t ($1,269.99 direct) is the first HP all-in-one desktop under the Envy brand name. The new Envy PCs are in fact the re-branded version of the HP Omni line of all-in-one desktops, and the Envy 23 accordingly retains many of the same features and design elements seen in previous models, like the HP Omni 27-1015t and the Blu-ray equipped HP Omni 27 and adds a few of its own, like BeatsAudio for a better listening experience.

Design and Features
The Envy 23-1050t retains the distinctive look seen on the HP Omni, with two arms lifting the monitor chassis up from a wide flat base. This design makes for an all-in-one desktop that is stable and also allows the angle of the monitor to be adjusted, or even lay flat if needed. Included with the desktop are two peripheral devices: a wired keyboard, and wired mouse. The keyboard and mouse are basic USB-connected devices, which means that they occupy two of the four USB 2.0 ports found on the back of the system. The basic devices will be serviceable for most, but those who spend a lot of time working on the PC will probably want to upgrade to better alternatives.

The 23-inch widescreen display has 1,920-by-1,080 resolution, similar in size and resolution to the Editors' Choice Asus ET2410IUTS-B018C . Below the display is a built-in soundbar with Beats Audio for improved sound. Taking advantage of this excellent display and sound is a built-in optical drive that plays Blu-rays and reads and burns DVDs. The presence of even a DVD optical drive is no longer something that desktop buyers can take for granted?the recent Vizio 27-inch All-in-One PC (CA27-A1) , for example, has no optical drive.

Along with the optical drive, the sides of the Envy 23-1050t offer two USB 3.0 ports, mic and headphone jacks, and a multiformat card reader (SD, MS, xD). An HDMI output lets you connect another monitor or HDTV as a second display, but you won't find an HDMI input, so there's no using the Envy 23 with your gaming console or cable box. On the back of the Envy 23, you'll find audio and subwoofer outputs, a power connection, and four USB 2.0 ports, though two of those ports will be occupied by the bundled keyboard and mouse. You'll also find the Ethernet port, which is a necessity on the Envy 23 since it has no built-in Wi-Fi.

HP has outfitted the Envy 23-1050t with a 1TB 7,200rpm hard drive, which offers plenty of storage capacity. Unfortunately, you will find that a good portion of it is already occupied by preinstalled software. Some of these programs are useful, such as Microsoft Office Starter 2010 and a 60-day trial of Norton Internet Security, and HP includes a number of tools and services, like HP LinkUp, which lets your desktop and laptop communicate and share files over your home network. But there are several programs you may not want or need, like branded toolbars from Ask.com and Bing. Blio and PDF Complete are there for reading ebooks and PDF documents, respectively, and you'll find a handful of game demos from WildTangent rebranded as HP Games. You'll also encounter a number of games and utilities that are part of HP's MagicCanvas program, which, though designed to take advantage of a touchscreen, has been included on all of HP's current all-in-one PCs. Without a touch screen, games like Bubblewrap, TapTap Bear, and Spot are pretty pointless. The HP Envy 23-1050t is covered by a two-year warranty.

Performance
The Envy 23-1050t offers quad-core processing, thanks to its 2.8GHz third-generation Core i5-3450S processor?similar to that seen in the HP 27-1015t, but with a slightly slower clock speed?and pairs it with 8GB of RAM. In CineBench R11.5, which serves as our processor speed benchmark, the Envy 23 scored 5.15, ahead of the Asus ET2410IUTS-B018C (4.70), but behind the HP 27-1015t (5.42). In our PCMark 7 general-use test, the Envy 23-1050t scored 2,943 points, comparing well with the 2,718 scored by the Dell Inspiron One 2320 or the 2,857 points of the Sony VAIO L24 (SVL24114FXB) but again falling behind the Core i7-equipped Asus ET2701INKI-B046C , which led the category with 3,512 points.

The Envy 23-1050t performed well in multimedia tests, completing Handbrake in 59 seconds, beating out even the Asus ET2701INKI-B046C (1:07). We saw similarly good results in Photoshop CS5, which the Envy 23-1050t finished in 3:12, ahead of the Dell 2320 (3:38) and Sony VAIO L24 (4:03), but it once again lagged behind the Asus ET2701INKI-B046C (2:51) and the HP 27-1015t (3:03). But its scores indicate that the Envy 23-1050t is still a decent tool for editing photos and video for digital scrapbooks or home movie collections.

The Envy 23-1050t is equipped with an Nvidia GeForce GT 540M graphics processor with 2GB of dedicated memory, which provides some gaming capability to the all-in-one. In 3DMark 11, the Envy 23-1050t scored 1,838 points at Entry level and 313 points at Extreme settings. The category-leading Asus ET2701INKI-B046C had a considerable lead (3,150 points at Entry settings, 591 points at Extreme), but most competing systems had scores similar to that of the Envy 23-1050t. The discrete graphics processor also opens up the possibility of gaming, producing a playable 47 frames per second (fps) in Crysis and a respectable 24 fps in Lost Planet 2 at low resolution and detail settings.

The HP Envy 23-1050t is the first all-in-one to bear the Envy name, and it's an overall solid system. But even though it carries over everything we liked about the Omni line, like a stable design and slot-loading Blu-ray drive, while throwing in Beats Audio, it's not perfect. Simple features like Wi-Fi connectivity or HDMI input?as seen on the Editors' Choice Dell Inspiron One 2320? would greatly expand the flexibility and usable life of the sytem, but are nowhere to be found. Despite these omissions, the HP Envy 23-1050t is still a decent all-in-one PC for a reasonable price.

5 Strategies for Success in the Legal Field | CAREEREALISM

For at least 20 years, women have accounted for half or nearly half of all law students. However, those numbers have not translated into equal representation in the higher ranks within the legal profession, according to the American Bar Association. But that doesn?t mean women entering the legal profession should stop trying to break that glass ceiling. Here are five strategies for success in the legal field:

1. Show Confidence

Men seem to have too much confidence. Women, on the other hand, exude too little. Talk to successful lawyers?or senior partners and they?ll tell you that the male confidence meter can be over the top while equally smart and accomplished women seem unsure, hesitant, or timid.

To get through law school, obtain a law degree, and pass the bar, you?ve obviously worked hard and accomplished much in a very short time. Recognize and own your gifts, talents and hard work; then confidently believe that those same skills will carry you on to continued excellence and achievement ? because it?s true.

2. Don?t Agonize Over Mistakes

The lawyer who tells you he?s never lost a case has never tried one, so the saying goes. The same holds true for mistakes. An attorney who hasn?t made a mistake has never worked in the legal profession.

If you make a mistake, own it, learn from it, and move forward. The way we handle setbacks opens up a window to character, perseverance, and problem-solving skills.

3. Seize Leadership Opportunities

Don?t just be a lawyer, be a leader. Starting out in your legal career, there are many opportunities to bury yourself in research and agonize over tiny details.

To set yourself apart and showcase your organizational, time-management, and people skills, seek out leadership positions in the firm and in the community. Volunteer to help organize a firm event or look for opportunities in the bar. The effort will not only get you noticed in your firm, it is also an investment in your professional brand that can pay dividends in unexpected ways in the future, such as by leading to new and better job opportunities and advancement.

4. Project a Professional Image

In the movie Bull Durham, Kevin Costner?s character, Crash Davis, gives career advice to the young, talented pitcher Ebby Calvin LaLoosh that goes like this:

?Your shower shoes have fungus on them. You?ll never make it to the bigs with fungus on your shower shoes. Think classy, you?ll be classy. If you win 20 in the show, you can let the fungus grow back and the press?ll think you?re colorful. Until you win 20 in the show, however, it means you are a slob.?

The same applies to young lawyers. Once you?ve achieved legendary status, the legal profession may tolerate casual dress and flamboyant outfits. Until then, err on the side of projecting a professional image.

5. Enjoy Yourself

Lawyers spend a lot of time at work ? probably too much time. Make no mistake; if work is no fun, you will be miserable. While not every assignment is going to make you click your heels with delight, there are many that can impart joy and satisfaction.

Helping a client solve a problem, fighting to protect a person?s rights or simply knowing that you?ve done a job well can go a long way towards enjoying yourself and feeling as though you?ve spent your time in a worthwhile and meaningful endeavor.

In my last two blog entries, I analyzed the business value of cloud by discussing ROI, agility and innovation. There is actually another area where cloud can help, and that is through productivity improvement.

?

A number of years ago, HP had transformed its IT environment and achieved great success in doing so. That?s when HP realized there was a large IT base that had been left untouched?in other words, all the computers under the desks of the engineers. Indeed, our R&D engineers used a variety of tools during the development of new products, hardware and software alike. They kept rebuilding those systems so they provided them with the right tools at every step in the development process. And most engineers, not trusting anybody, had the systems literally under their desk.

HP Product Development & Engineering IT Transformation

A painful transformation started. How would we get those systems away from under the engineers? desk in a datacenter where they could properly be managed? In the mind of the project team this would have several benefits:

• Standardize the toolset used by the engineers
• Focus the engineers on what they do best, development of new products, and relieve them from system management and configuration tasks
• Ensure security, back-up and disaster recovery, so information and intellectual property would be better protected

That stated, the engineers would start doing things in a standardized way. But how do you achieve that with people whose creativity you want to stimulate? You ask them to be as creative as possible in the design of their product, while you streamline them to use standard processes. It?s an oxymoron. Transforming the engineering environment requires careful change management. You must constantly demonstrate the added value to engineers of handing in their servers and software which requires depending on a central team to deliver what they need. The interesting part is the savings HP has experienced from doing this transformation. Actually, if you are interested in understanding more about this transformation you may want to read ?Transforming product design and engineering to save time and money in the electronics industry.?

Researching for this blog entry, I ran into a post from my friend Gareth Evans dated from 2009, but in which he describes the benefits HP got from this exercise. HP?s PD&E IT transformation freed up 10-20 percent of engineering resources to go back to performing core productive work that adds up to potentially more successful, higher quality offerings consistently delivered at ever deceasing cost points and competitive time-to-market. The environment can also be kept current in a systematic and organized way going forward. So in a nutshell following benefits can be achieved:

• 10-20 percent more engineering productivity resulting in better products delivered with shorter time-to-market
• Better utilization of the R&D IT environment
• Better management of tools licenses, which can result in the need for less licenses
• Standardization of tools used (improves compatibility between projects and potentially component re-use)
• Increased protection of intellectual property

The question is obviously how these benefits are expressed in monetary terms and whether they can help you justify the migration to cloud. The Engineering IT transformation will not just give you the benefits I discuss above, but will also make you more agile, which in turn brings its own benefits with it.

Software Development

What is true for PD&E is also true for software development. Mostly software development is done in an artisanal way. As we discussed, the increasing importance of digitization in general and the associated software development in particular, standardizing and optimizing the way software is built is critical. One way to address this is to migrate to PaaS environments, and we see many start-ups actually doing just that. They jumped from the traditional approach to public cloud based PaaS environments all together.

Larger enterprises may not be ready for that. However, streamlining software development, standardizing the processes and improving the use of the development platforms are critical for enterprises to invest their money wisely and improve their agility. Four components are key to achieve this objective:

• A well-established project governance supported by tools allowing a thorough visibility of the requirements, progress and budget constraints. To achieve this, we use a tool called Project and Portfolio Management
• An environment in which you can manage and track every step in the development process, regardless of the platform you use (as larger projects will most probably combine multiple development platforms). That environment will gather information on the product through the different development steps. We call that Application LifeCycle Management.
• A cloud environment allowing your development engineers to quickly get access to the appropriate infrastructure and tools required at each step of the development. I?ll come back to this in a minute.
• Closer integration between development and operations to ensure a seamless production start-up. As I described in an earlier blog entry, we should learn from design for manufacturability and involve operations people throughout the development process to ensure compatibility between the application being developed and the environment on which it will run.

Let me come back to what we call the ?dev/test? cloud. During the different steps in the development process, multiple environments are required and the amount of compute power needed will vary drastically. So the question really is whether we use the public cloud for all development steps or whether we do some things internally while using public cloud for others. Dev/Test is truly a converged cloud use case.

Stress testing an environment with anonymized data is definitely something we?ll do in a public cloud, but it will be interesting to see how public cloud-based PaaS environments will be adopted by developers of larger enterprises. Ideally what you would like is to be able to develop your application completely in the public cloud and then be able to take it back in-house without having to adapt it for a different cloud environment. Here again the concepts of converged cloud apply.

Conclusion

Whether it is engineering or software development, centralizing the development resources (hardware, software) and making them easy to provision, frees engineers up and allows them to spend more time on developing the product or software. This is value to the bottom line as it allows projects to run faster and smoother, delivering results earlier and improving agility.

But there are side effects. Standardizing the processes and documentation makes re-use of components easier, centralized management of tool licenses reduces cost while facilitating compliance and central back-up/recovery of information protects key assets of the enterprise. The real question is how the last three elements are represented as financial benefits, facilitating the ROI calculation of cloud investments.

So, how much time do your users spend setting up IT environments, trying to get access to them, finding the right connections etc.? How much are your users spending time and effort finding the appropriate ?shadow-IT? tool because IT does not deliver them what they are looking for? Ask yourselves those questions, think about how cloud computing could help and use the results of your investigations to justify your move to cloud.

ALA President Challenges 'Discriminatory' eBook Policies - GalleyCat

The American Library Association?s president Maureen Sullivan released an open letter to publishers today, singling out the ?discriminatory? eBook library policies of three major publishers.

The letter focused on how Simon & Schuster, Macmillan, and Penguin do not offer digital books to many of the 169 million public library users around the country. Here?s an excerpt:

Librarians have a particular concern for vulnerable populations that may not have any other access to books and electronic content, including individuals and families who are homebound or low-income. To deny these library users access to ebooks that are available to others ? and which libraries are eager to purchase on their behalf ? is discriminatory. We have met and talked sincerely with many of these publishers. We have sought common ground by exploring new business models and library lending practices. But these conversations only matter if they are followed by action: Simon & Schuster must sell to libraries. Macmillan must implement its proposed pilot. Penguin must accelerate and expand its pilots beyond two urban New York libraries.

An Open Letter to America?s Publishers by Maureen Sullivan

It?s a rare thing in a free market when a customer is refused the ability to buy a company?s product and is told its money is ?no good here.? Surprisingly, after centuries of enthusiastically supporting publishers? products, libraries find themselves in just that position with purchasing ebooks from three of the largest publishers in the world. Simon & Schuster, Macmillan, and Penguin have been denying access to their ebooks for our nation?s 112,000 libraries and roughly 169 million public library users.

Let?s be clear on what this means: If our libraries? digital bookshelves mirrored the New York Times fiction bestseller list, we would be missing half of our collection any given week due to these publishers? policies. The popular Bared to You and The Glass Castle are not available in libraries because libraries cannot purchase them at any price. Today?s teens also will not find the digital copy of Judy Blume?s seminal Forever, nor today?s blockbuster ?Hunger Games? series.

Not all publishers are following the path of these three publishers. In fact, hundreds of publishers of ebooks have embraced the opportunity to create new sales and reach readers through our nation?s libraries. One recent innovation allows library patrons to immediately purchase an ebook if the library doesn?t have a copy or if there is a wait list they would like to avoid. This offers a win-win relationship for both publishers and library users since recent research from the Pew Internet Project tells us that library users are more than twice as likely to have bought their most recent book as to have borrowed it from a library.

Libraries around the country are developing mobile applications and online discovery systems that make it easier to explore books and authors on the go. Seventy-six percent of public libraries now offer ebooks ? double the number from only five years ago ? and 39 percent of libraries have purchased and circulate e-readers. Public libraries alone spend more than $1.3 billion annually on their collections of print, audio, video, and electronic materials. They are investing not only in access to content and devices, but also in teaching the skills needed to navigate and utilize digital content successfully.

Librarians understand that publishing is not just another industry. It has special and important significance to society. Libraries complement and, in fact, actively support this industry by supporting literacy and seeking to spread an infectious and lifelong love of reading and learning. Library lending encourages patrons to experiment by sampling new authors, topics, and genres. This experimentation stimulates the market for books, with the library serving as a de facto discovery, promotion, and awareness service for authors and publishers.

Publishers, libraries, and other entities have worked together for centuries to sustain a healthy reading ecosystem ? celebrating our society?s access to the complete marketplace of ideas. Given the obvious value of libraries to publishers, it simply does not add up that any publisher would continue to lock out libraries. It doesn?t add up for me, it doesn?t add up for ALA?s 60,000 members, and it definitely doesn?t add up for the millions of people who use our libraries every month.

America?s libraries have always served as the ?people?s university? by providing access to reading materials and educational opportunity for the millions who want to read and learn but cannot afford to buy the books they need. Librarians have a particular concern for vulnerable populations that may not have any other access to books and electronic content, including individuals and families who are homebound or low-income. To deny these library users access to ebooks that are available to others ? and which libraries are eager to purchase on their behalf ? is discriminatory.

We have met and talked sincerely with many of these publishers. We have sought common ground by exploring new business models and library lending practices. We librarians cannot stand by and do nothing while some publishers deepen the digital divide. We cannot wait passively while some publishers deny access to our cultural record. We must speak out on behalf of today?s ? and tomorrow?s ? readers. The library community demands meaningful change and creative solutions that serve libraries and our readers who rightfully expect the same access to ebooks as they have to printed books.

So, which side will you be on? Will you join us in a future of liberating literature for all? Libraries stand with readers, thinkers, writers, dreamers, and inventors. Books and knowledge ? in all their forms ? are essential. Access to them must not be denied.
