96% The Kid with a Bike

All Critics (90) | Top Critics (25) | Fresh (86) | Rotten (4)

"The Kid With a Bike" vibrates with desperation, frustration and the simple unfairness of life, leavened with glimpses of hope.

Cyril is one of the most inspiringly resilient, self-aware young characters to arrive on-screen in recent memory...

"The Kid With A Bike'' is, remarkably, about hope - about the connections people forge when the ones they've been given desert them.

The Dardennes' quiet, naturalistic style strips this story of melodrama but not of emotion.

Without diminishing the boy's intensity or making him in any way ingratiating, the Dardennes take us into his mind, and we begin to appreciate not only his predicament but his resiliency.

The Dardennes' latest is one of their best, a memorable cinematic portrait of troubled youth and soul-saving charity.

...the film delivers a final act as riveting as it is artistically satisfying. Not many films can claim a perfect ending. This one can.

...manages to balance a spiritual sense of grace with the earthy eye of a here-and-now realist.

Hunched over the handlebars, the boy's body seems to carve a hole in the wind. And we watch as this unhappy, rejected child makes some terrible choices, some of which make us want to look away.

One of the classic international works about juvenile delinquency.

If the film doesn't sizzle as heatedly as the Dardennes' more celebrated works, it's nevertheless infused with the compassion and care that they seem always to bring to bear on any subject.

Emotionally restrained yet compassionate, coming-of-age morality tale

The ending is somewhat contrived and forced, but not false, and there's a moving moment when Cyril and Samantha, riding beside a canal one sunny day, exchange bicycles.

[The Dardennes'] latest threads back to previous works in intriguing and satisfying ways...

To their credit, the Dardennes portray their subjects with a minimum of sentimentality.

It seems like a fairly minor movie, although one with major emotional pull.

Remains an effective picture with a genuine feel for human behavior, unearthing a direct sense of disturbance and a few select moments of stunning psychological clarity.

A film of rosy optimism it features a beguiling performance from screen newcomer doret who achieves a wonderfully natural, touching chemistry with de France.

Beyond Samantha's hard-to-fathom loyalty, many of the plot twists are predictable and contrived.

You wouldn't exactly call The Kid With a Bike a feel-good movie, but by the end it certainly invites the viewer to be hopeful about human nature. Another gem from the boys.

???????????As fitness professionals there are many different groups of people that one will work with including, working with athletes, the elderly, middle aged clients, and youth.? The focus of this discussion will look into what single type of exercise would be suitable for enhancing the quality of life for (a) a healthy young adult (late 20?s- early 30?s)? and (b) and older healthy adult (60+). A fair amount of research suggests that cardiovascular training is beneficial for both demographics. ?A review study by Warburton, D. R., Nicol, C., & Bredin, S. D. (2006), states that regular physical activity is a factor in directly and indirectly preventing cardiovascular and several other chronic conditions, which can be a cause of premature death. The review also stated that physical activity can be a health preventative measure for people of all ages.
Physical fitness can be split into two different categories: performance related physical fitness (sports enhancement) and health related physical fitness (a physiologic state; which allows one to meet the stress of daily activity) (Warburton, D. R., Nicol, C., & Bredin, S. D. (2006). Each of these two can help enhance quality of life. This discussion will be looking at the benefits of aerobic training, also known as cardiovascular training, on enhancing the quality of life for both subjects discussed earlier. ?Although aerobic training is beneficial for both demographics, the fitness professional must understand that there is an appropriate exercise selection for each.
For young adults, the fitness professional has the opportunity to choose from a wide range of aerobic exercises to help improve quality of life. Stroth, S., Hille, K., Spitzer, M., & Reinhardt, R. (2009) study suggests that aerobic fitness is related to positive cognitive function and mood. This study conducted a 6 week aerobic running program that was 70-100% of aerobic threshold. The positive effects that were recorded were seen in a visuospatial memory test, their tests the memory of visual items. Improving ones visual memory is an important part of enhancing quality of life. ?Shiotani, H., Umegaki, Y., Tanaka, M., Kimura, M., & Ando, H. (2009) suggest that aerobic exercise has a positive effect on lowering heart rate and positive benefits on circadian rhythm. This is important because both of these indicators have also been seen to be predictors in coronary vascular disease. The subjects in this particular study performed 35 minutes of cycling 3 times per week for two months.
For the older adults we will be looking at an age range of (60+). ?Hatta, A., Nishihira, Y., & Higashiura, T. (2011) suggest that growing older comes with many physiological changes such as: weakness, poor quality of life and ability to function in a day-to-day fashion. Hatta, A., Nishihira, Y., & Higashiura, T. (2011) conducted a study where they focused on the effects of a single session of walking on psychophysiological stress in healthy adults. The intensity of the exercise was moderate, which in this case was 60-70% of maximal heart rate. Their study found that walking for elderly adults lowered ?Confusion?, which suggests that moderate aerobic exercise can influence brain function in a positive way.
As stated before, fitness professionals must show tact when choosing exercises for every client. Understanding that not all elderly have the ability to do moderate amounts of walking every day is important. Large amounts of the elderly have difficulty with mobility and other chronic diseases which limit the options for exercise. Broman, G., Quintana, M., Lindberg, T., Jansson, E., & Kaijser, L. (2006) suggest that deep water running is an alternative for those that have mobility limitations. The study had females of ages 69 +- 4 perform 3 interval sessions of 75% of maximal heart rate for an average of 24.2 minutes. . Broman, G., Quintana, M., Lindberg, T., Jansson, E., & Kaijser, L. (2006) suggests that high intensity deep water interval running with a vest helps maximal aerobic power and maximal ventilation in healthy elderly women.

Aerobic training has been shown to have positive effects on cognitive function and mood, as well as lowering heart rate and has positive benefits on circadian rhythm in healthy young adults. It has also been shown to have positive effects on psychophysiological stress and increases maximal aerobic power and maximal ventilation in healthy elderly women.

To Understand the Lack of Business Ethics Look to Education ...

So you want high business ethics? Well, that may just be a pipe dream if the data from existing universities is confirmed through actual behaviors.

In 2005, Duke University released one report that revealed over 75% of high school students admitted to cheating. That number climbs to over 90% if copying by sharing homework is included.

An extensive article in the San Francisco Chronicle by Regan McMahon published on September 9, 2007 shows the depth of cheating and the potential impact to the business world within the secondary education world.

And the graduate world is also a mecca for cheating students. A report published in 2006 by the Academy of Management Learning and Education journal suggested that 56% of the MBA students admitted to cheating. These are potentially the future business leaders. Other reports released have suggested that soon to be lawyers and teachers also practice cheating on a consistent basis.

The American business economy has already experienced the affects of bad business ethics. When people point the finger at companies such as Enron and Arthur Anderson, the unethical behavior was not caused by the organization, but rather these individuals were already unethical. Again, the belief that everyone does it was probably not far from their conscious actions.

The excuses for cheating are many just like in the work place where business ethics are violated on a daily basis. However, what is interesting to note is that when everything is peeled away, the belief that everyone does it whether they do or do not is driving this cheating behavior.

This belief that everyone does it is not only regulated to business ethics, but human behavior in general. Children complain to parents well so and so can do it. Adults complain to other adults about so and so doing something.

To change business ethics demands that the beliefs driving the attitudes demonstrated through the behaviors must be identify. Ignoring these beliefs will only make the current situation worse.

In cancer science, many "discoveries" don't hold up

NEW YORK (Reuters) - A former researcher at Amgen Inc has found that many basic studies on cancer -- a high proportion of them from university labs -- are unreliable, with grim consequences for producing new medicines in the future.

During a decade as head of global cancer research at Amgen, C. Glenn Begley identified 53 "landmark" publications -- papers in top journals, from reputable labs -- for his team to reproduce. Begley sought to double-check the findings before trying to build on them for drug development.

Result: 47 of the 53 could not be replicated. He described his findings in a commentary piece published on Wednesday in the journal Nature.

"It was shocking," said Begley, now senior vice president of privately held biotechnology company TetraLogic, which develops cancer drugs. "These are the studies the pharmaceutical industry relies on to identify new targets for drug development. But if you're going to place a $1 million or $2 million or $5 million bet on an observation, you need to be sure it's true. As we tried to reproduce these papers we became convinced you can't take anything at face value."

The failure to win "the war on cancer" has been blamed on many factors, from the use of mouse models that are irrelevant to human cancers to risk-averse funding agencies. But recently a new culprit has emerged: too many basic scientific discoveries, done in animals or cells growing in lab dishes and meant to show the way to a new drug, are wrong.

Begley's experience echoes a report from scientists at Bayer AG last year. Neither group of researchers alleges fraud, nor would they identify the research they had tried to replicate.

But they and others fear the phenomenon is the product of a skewed system of incentives that has academics cutting corners to further their careers.

George Robertson of Dalhousie University in Nova Scotia previously worked at Merck on neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson's. While at Merck, he also found many academic studies that did not hold up.

"It drives people in industry crazy. Why are we seeing a collapse of the pharma and biotech industries? One possibility is that academia is not providing accurate findings," he said.

BELIEVE IT OR NOT

Over the last two decades, the most promising route to new cancer drugs has been one pioneered by the discoverers of Gleevec, the Novartis drug that targets a form of leukemia, and Herceptin, Genentech's breast-cancer drug. In each case, scientists discovered a genetic change that turned a normal cell into a malignant one. Those findings allowed them to develop a molecule that blocks the cancer-producing process.

This approach led to an explosion of claims of other potential "druggable" targets. Amgen tried to replicate the new papers before launching its own drug-discovery projects.

Scientists at Bayer did not have much more success. In a 2011 paper titled, "Believe it or not," they analyzed in-house projects that built on "exciting published data" from basic science studies. "Often, key data could not be reproduced," wrote Khusru Asadullah, vice president and head of target discovery at Bayer HealthCare in Berlin, and colleagues.

Of 47 cancer projects at Bayer during 2011, less than one-quarter could reproduce previously reported findings, despite the efforts of three or four scientists working full time for up to a year. Bayer dropped the projects.

Bayer and Amgen found that the prestige of a journal was no guarantee a paper would be solid. "The scientific community assumes that the claims in a preclinical study can be taken at face value," Begley and Lee Ellis of MD Anderson Cancer Center wrote in Nature. It assumes, too, that "the main message of the paper can be relied on ... Unfortunately, this is not always the case."

When the Amgen replication team of about 100 scientists could not confirm reported results, they contacted the authors. Those who cooperated discussed what might account for the inability of Amgen to confirm the results. Some let Amgen borrow antibodies and other materials used in the original study or even repeat experiments under the original authors' direction.

Some authors required the Amgen scientists sign a confidentiality agreement barring them from disclosing data at odds with the original findings. "The world will never know" which 47 studies -- many of them highly cited -- are apparently wrong, Begley said.

The most common response by the challenged scientists was: "you didn't do it right." Indeed, cancer biology is fiendishly complex, noted Phil Sharp, a cancer biologist and Nobel laureate at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Even in the most rigorous studies, the results might be reproducible only in very specific conditions, Sharp explained: "A cancer cell might respond one way in one set of conditions and another way in different conditions. I think a lot of the variability can come from that."

THE BEST STORY

Other scientists worry that something less innocuous explains the lack of reproducibility.

Part way through his project to reproduce promising studies, Begley met for breakfast at a cancer conference with the lead scientist of one of the problematic studies.

"We went through the paper line by line, figure by figure," said Begley. "I explained that we re-did their experiment 50 times and never got their result. He said they'd done it six times and got this result once, but put it in the paper because it made the best story. It's very disillusioning."

Such selective publication is just one reason the scientific literature is peppered with incorrect results.

For one thing, basic science studies are rarely "blinded" the way clinical trials are. That is, researchers know which cell line or mouse got a treatment or had cancer. That can be a problem when data are subject to interpretation, as a researcher who is intellectually invested in a theory is more likely to interpret ambiguous evidence in its favor.

The problem goes beyond cancer.

On Tuesday, a committee of the National Academy of Sciences heard testimony that the number of scientific papers that had to be retracted increased more than tenfold over the last decade; the number of journal articles published rose only 44 percent.

Ferric Fang of the University of Washington, speaking to the panel, said he blamed a hypercompetitive academic environment that fosters poor science and even fraud, as too many researchers compete for diminishing funding.

"The surest ticket to getting a grant or job is getting published in a high-profile journal," said Fang. "This is an unhealthy belief that can lead a scientist to engage in sensationalism and sometimes even dishonest behavior."

The academic reward system discourages efforts to ensure a finding was not a fluke. Nor is there an incentive to verify someone else's discovery. As recently as the late 1990s, most potential cancer-drug targets were backed by 100 to 200 publications. Now each may have fewer than half a dozen.

"If you can write it up and get it published you're not even thinking of reproducibility," said Ken Kaitin, director of the Tufts Center for the Study of Drug Development. "You make an observation and move on. There is no incentive to find out it was wrong."

Interview with Franchise Opportunity The Maids Home Services ...

Ronn Cordova has been a part of the franchise industry in one way or another for the better part of two decades. He?s been a franchisee, a broker, an outsourced vice president for several different concepts, and now, he?s the Vice President of Franchise Development for The Maids.

?

?You can make a lot of money in the franchise business,? he says, ?but few afford that slice of heaven [that The Maids does.]?

?

That slice of heaven Ronn Cordova speaks of is time? time most people, franchisees or otherwise, don?t have to spend with their friends or family because they?re working. It?s the typical trade-off: success and money versus time with your family. Luckily, for those who choose to be a part of The Maids?franchise, that?s a choice you?ll never have to make.

?

The Maids, long before Cordova arrived in May of 2011, has been wrought with success. It?s been ranked number one by the Franchise Business Review for the cleaning services industry. The Maids has also been ranked number 1 in industry and 42 overall by Entrepreneur 2012 Top 500 magazine. (There?s been only one lawsuit between the franchise and a franchisee that occurred over 10 years ago.) The franchise still likes to keep that information on its FDD so prospective franchisees know absolutely everything about the company. In fact, it was that kind of honesty that attracted Cordova to The Maids in the first place.

?

As a former franchisee, Cordova understands and anticipates the questions someone interested in The Maids might have.? His ?knowledge of the trenches? comes from personal experience: he used to own a few pizza franchises. While the pizza franchises didn?t work out for Cordova, he took to heart all that he learned as a small business owner. ?I?m very careful to [properly] place franchisees,? he says.

?

When it comes to selecting and placing new franchisees, Ronn and the rest of the franchise development team go over each application case by case. ?We evaluate on a per individual basis,? Cordova says. Of course business acumen, sales, marketing and managerial skills are welcome and necessary. Financial fortitude is important too, though the franchise does help with financing via a third party. As a franchisee, you?re given mountains of support: 7-week long online pre-training course, 9 days of training at The Maids headquarters in Omaha, NE, a week of on-site support when you?re up and running, a business coach for the duration of your franchise agreement, and you?re assigned a mentor.

?

It may surprise you that the cleaning services industry has become a necessity as opposed to a luxury in recent years. ?It?s been hard to make the cleaning industry sexy,? admits Cordova, but the Great Recession certainly helped to boost business. Now, in a traditional family unit, both heads of the household work in some capacity. The time that once was used to clean bathrooms and vacuum carpets is now spent at work. ?There?s a lot of money to be made in the everyday services [industries],? Cordova says.

?

?One of the best parts of our business is that it affords a family lifestyle,? asserts Ronn. Customers who use The Maids? services usually work Monday-through-Friday between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. and not on the weekends, which is exactly when they want their homes to be cleaned.

?

As someone who works for The Maids or owns a franchise, you?re home when your clients are: in time to have dinner with your kids.

(AP) ? As they await an Illinois primary vote whose outcome is hardly assured, Mitt Romney is betting his message of economic proficiency will resonate with Republican voters more than Rick Santorum's sharply honed conservatism.

Both men were competing for the 54 delegates at stake Tuesday in Illinois. They were looking to score a victory in a state that was not only home to President Barack Obama but is also one of the last major battlegrounds before a three-week lull in April.

Romney's confidence was on display Monday, while Santorum was forced on the defensive for first declaring that the economy was not a top issue in the campaign and then stating that "the campaign doesn't hinge on unemployment rates."

By day's end, Santorum had conceded that the economy and unemployment were important but said they were symptoms of what he described as broader ills: government intrusion and eroding freedom.

Romney on Tuesday denounced Obama's economic policies, choosing to make his remarks at the very university where the president once taught constitutional law.

Santorum hit hard at Romney, who leads the Republican field in delegates and whose nomination, barring a political disaster, seems more and more assured as the contest results mount. Santorum cloaked himself in the mantle of Ronald Reagan and argued that health care, not the economy, is the predominant issue of the campaign.

Santorum and Romney crisscrossed the state Monday, coming within mere hours of each other in Peoria.

Tuesday's primary comes on the heels of Romney's overwhelming victory Sunday in Puerto Rico, a territory Santorum courted at the expense of spending time in Illinois. Though Illinois is expected to be far closer than Puerto Rico, recent polls indicate Romney may be pulling away.

Even if he should lose the popular vote, Romney is poised to win the delegate battle. Santorum cannot win at least 10 of the state's 54 delegates available Tuesday because his campaign didn't file the necessary paperwork.

Romney planned to hold an election-night party Tuesday in Schaumburg, Ill.

Santorum was leaving the state to deliver an evening speech about Abraham Lincoln in Gettysburg, Pa. Last week in Chicago, Obama said he hoped the Republican candidates would "take a little time to reflect" on Lincoln while campaigning in Illinois.

After Tuesday, the contest moves to Louisiana, in a part of the country where Romney has had trouble breaking through. Louisiana has a total of 46 delegates to the Republican National Convention, but only 20 delegates are at stake in Saturday's primary. An additional 23 delegates will be selected at the party's state convention in June, and the remaining 3 are the automatic RNC delegates.

With the economy still foremost on voters' minds, Romney on Monday immediately took advantage of Santorum's comments about unemployment.

"One of the people who is running also for the Republican nomination today said that he doesn't care about the unemployment rate," Romney told college students in Peoria, Ill. "It does bother me. I want to get people back to work. I am concerned about those how are out of work."

Santorum made a partial retreat.

"Americans don't take kindly to the yoke of government, and we don't do very well. Our economy struggles when that happens," he told Chicago radio station WLS.

Later, during his own stop in Peoria, Santorum explained he does not use notes or a teleprompter when he speaks. "Occasionally you say some things where you wish you had a do-over," he said.

Moments later, he added: "The economy is a big issue. Unemployment is a big issue."

(AP) ? John Demjanjuk, a retired U.S. autoworker who was convicted of being a guard at the Nazis' Sobibor death camp despite steadfastly maintaining over three decades of legal battles that he had been mistaken for someone else, died Saturday, his son told The Associated Press. He was 91.

Demjanjuk, convicted in May of 28,060 counts of being an accessory to murder and sentenced to five years in prison, died a free man in his own room in a nursing home in the southern Bavarian town of Bad Feilnbach. He had been released pending his appeal.

John Demjanjuk Jr. said in a telephone interview from Ohio that his father apparently died of natural causes. Demjanjuk had terminal bone marrow disease, chronic kidney disease and other ailments, and local authorities said the exact cause of death was still being determined.

It was not yet known whether he would be brought back to the U.S. for burial.

Ukrainian-born Demjanjuk (dehm-YAHN'-yook) had steadfastly denied any involvement in the Nazi Holocaust since the first accusations were levied against him more than 30 years ago.

"My father fell asleep with the Lord as a victim and survivor of Soviet and German brutality since childhood," Demjanjuk Jr. said. "He loved life, family and humanity. History will show Germany used him as a scapegoat to blame helpless Ukrainian POWs for the deeds of Nazi Germans."

His conviction helped set new German legal precedent, being the first time someone was convicted solely on the basis of serving as a camp guard, with no evidence of being involved in a specific killing.

Presiding Judge Ralph Alt said the evidence showed Demjanjuk was a piece of the Nazis' "machinery of destruction."

"The court is convinced that the defendant ... served as a guard at Sobibor" from March 27, 1943, until mid-September 1943, Alt said in his ruling.

Israeli Holocaust scholar Yehuda Bauer, who researches at the Yad Vashem memorial, said Demjanjuk's story showed an important moral lesson.

"You don't let people, even if they were only junior staff, get away from responsibility," Bauer said.

Despite his conviction, his family never gave up its battle to have his U.S. citizenship reinstated so that he could live out his final days nearby them in the Cleveland area. One of their main arguments was that the defense had never seen a 1985 FBI document, uncovered in early 2011 by the AP, calling into question the authenticity of a Nazi ID card used against him.

Demjanjuk maintained that he was a victim of the Nazis himself ? first wounded as a Soviet soldier fighting German forces, then captured and held as a prisoner of war under brutal conditions.

"I am again and again an innocent victim of the Germans," he told the panel of Munich state court judges during his 18-month trial, in a statement he signed and that was read aloud by his attorney Ulrich Busch.

He said after the war he was unable to return to his homeland, and that taking him away from his family in the U.S. to stand trial in Germany was a "continuation of the injustice" done to him.

"Germany is responsible for the fact that I have lost for good my whole reason to live, my family, my happiness, any future and hope," he said.

But representatives of victims, Jewish groups and others welcomed his trial as a legitimate quest for justice.

"A death is always tragic. But in this case it is important to say that it was right to put him on trial and sentence him," the president of Germany's Central Council of Jews, Dieter Graumann, told the AP.

"Justice does not know a statute of limitation, and age does not protect from punishment. This was never about revenge, but about justice," he added.

Demjanjuk's claims of mistaken identity, however, gained credence after he successfully defended himself against accusations initially brought in 1977 by the U.S. Justice Department that he was "Ivan the Terrible" ? a notoriously brutal guard at the Treblinka extermination camp.

In connection with the allegation, he was extradited to Israel from the U.S. in 1986 to stand trial on charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity, convicted and sentenced to death. But the Israeli Supreme Court in 1993 overturned the verdict on appeal, saying that evidence showed another Ukrainian man was actually "Ivan the Terrible," and ordered him returned to the U.S.

The Israeli judges said, however, they still believed Demjanjuk had served the Nazis, probably at the Trawniki SS training camp and Sobibor. But they declined to order a new trial, saying there was a risk of violating the law prohibiting trying someone twice on the same evidence.

Demjanjuk returned to his suburban Cleveland home in 1993 and his U.S. citizenship, which had been revoked in 1981, was reinstated in 1998.

Demjanjuk remained under investigation in the U.S., where a judge revoked his citizenship again in 2002 based on Justice Department evidence suggesting he concealed his service at Sobibor. Appeals failed, and the nation's chief immigration judge ruled in 2005 that Demjanjuk could be deported to Germany, Poland or Ukraine.

Prosecutors in Germany filed charges in 2009, saying Demjanjuk's link to Sobibor and Trawniki was clear, with evidence showing that after he was captured by the Germans he volunteered to serve with the fanatical SS and trained as a camp guard.

Though there are no known witnesses who remember Demjanjuk from Sobibor, prosecutors referred to an SS identity card that they said features a photo of a young, round-faced Demjanjuk and that says he worked at the death camp. That and other evidence indicating Demjanjuk had served under the SS convinced the panel of judges in Munich, and led to his conviction.

He was ordered tried in Munich because he lived in the area briefly after the war.

Demjanjuk, who was removed by U.S. immigration agents from his home in suburban Cleveland and deported in May 2009, questioned the evidence in the German case, saying the identity card was possibly a Soviet postwar forgery.

He reiterated his contention that after he was captured in Crimea in 1942, he was held prisoner until joining the Vlasov Army ? a force of anti-communist Soviet POWs and others formed to fight with the Germans against the Soviets in the final months of the war.

Demjanjuk was born April 3, 1920, in the village of Dubovi Makharintsi in central Ukraine, two years before the country became part of the Soviet Union. He grew up during a time when the country was wracked by famines that killed millions, and a wave of purges instituted by Stalin to eliminate any possible opposition.

As a young man Demjanjuk worked as a tractor driver for the area's collective farm. After being called up for the Soviet Red Army, he was wounded in action but sent back to the front after he had recovered, only to be captured during the battle of Kerch Peninsula in May 1942.

After the war, Demjanjuk was sent to a displaced persons camp and worked briefly as a driver for the U.S. Army. In 1950, he sought U.S. citizenship, claiming to have been a farmer in Sobibor, Poland, during the war.

Demjanjuk later said he lied about his wartime activities to avoid being sent back to Ukraine, then a part of the Soviet Union. Just to have admitted being in the Vlasov Army would also have been enough to have him barred from emigration to the U.S. or many other countries.

He came to the U.S. on Feb. 9, 1952, and eventually settled in Seven Hills, a middle-class suburb of Cleveland.

He was a mechanic at Ford Motor Co.'s engine plant in the Cleveland suburb of Brook Park and with his wife, Vera, raised three children ? son John Jr. and daughters Irene and Lydia.
