Essential Factors Of Improving Your Home - Total Vibration

With tools and knowledge you can make many dream projects around your home become reality. This article is packed with helpful tips and advice about how to make the most of the potential projects around your home. Read each tip to learn how to turn potential into reality in your home.

If you are doing multiple projects in one room, consider the order of the projects. If you are replacing the cabinets and floor, it is a good idea to start with the cabinets. If you start with the cabinets, the debris will only hurt the floor that you are about to replace. Sit down and write out a detailed plan before you do any work - you?ll be very glad that you did.

To give old cabinets a face lift, consider a bold, funky effect such as crackling or even decoupage. This is a great way to change the look of your kitchen without the expense of replacing cabinets, especially those that are still in good physical condition. Just make sure to coat your handiwork with a topcoat that does not yellow over time.

When it is time to make serious improvements to your home, engage the services of a competent general contractor. Shop around and make careful comparisons. A competent and honest, general contractor, can complete home improvements professionally. A contractor can also perform home improvement work cheaper than you can manage, by doing it yourself.

While major home improvements can grow very expensive, homeowners should avoid taking home loans to fund renovations unless it is absolutely necessary. Unless the renovations in question are needed immediately to prevent damage or make a house fit for sale, it is better to let them wait. Funding home improvement work from savings or investments is far superior to funding it through debt. Take a look at MLM recruiting - what?s required for smart advice.

Remodel your kitchen if it has ugly or outdated appliances and cabinetry. Kitchens are a significant portion of the value of a home. By remodeling your kitchen, you can greatly increase the value of your home. Install stainless steel appliances, replace cabinet doors and put in a tile or glass backsplash.

Going green with your flooring can lead to more green in your pocket when selling your home. Consider a home improvement with environmentally friendly bamboo. Bamboo has become the hot trend in flooring. Not only is it easy to keep clean, but it gives the home an upscale look and lasts for a very long time.

Spending time on home improvement projects can be an extremely rewarding hobby. The key to getting the results you desire is to learn as much as possible about the task you intend to undertake. By following this article?s guidance and tips, you will be off to a great start on your latest home improvement adventure.

Shelly Wan - Lines and Colors

Shelly Wan
Shelly Wan is an illustrator, concept artist and gallery artist who works both in digital and traditional media. She is currently an artist for Pixar and also does work for Magic: The Gathering as well as comic covers and book covers.

Originally from Guang Zhou, China, where she studied at the Guang Zhou Academy of Fine Arts, Wan came to the U.S. to study illustration at the Art Center College of Design in California.

Wan?s digital illustration has a luxuriously detailed and richly textural quality, drawing on influences from Art Nouveau and Victorian painting as well as pop culture and classic adventure illustration. Her compositions often have a wonderful sense of motion, leading your eye through sweepingly curved paths of value and color contrasts.

As far as I know, Wan doesn?t have a dedicated website, though she maintains a blog which often features work in progress, as well as articles on other art related subjects of interest.

For a selection of her professional work, look to her portfolio on Eidolon Fine Arts, which also features a gallery of her oil paintings, many of which are figure studies.

There is also a gallery of her work on Tor.com, as well as selections on Gallery Nucleus and CGHub.

There is an article on ImagineFX, and interview on Last Man Standing, another on Irene Gallo?s The Art Department and a video convention interview (unfortunately in a noisy environment) on YouTube.

New species top 10 list: Underworld worm, walking cactus creature, blue tarantula, sneezing monkey, and more

ScienceDaily (May 23, 2012) ? The International Institute for Species Exploration at Arizona State University and a committee of scientists from around the world announced their picks for the top 10 new species described in 2011. This is the fifth year for the top 10 new species list, which was released May 23 to coincide with the anniversary of the birth of Carolus Linnaeus, the Swedish botanist who was responsible for the modern system of plant and animal names and classifications.

On this year's top 10 new species list are a sneezing monkey, a beautiful but venomous jellyfish, an underworld worm and a fungus named for a popular TV cartoon character. The top 10 new species also include a night-blooming orchid, an ancient walking cactus creature and a tiny wasp. Rounding out this year's list are a vibrant poppy, a giant millipede and a blue tarantula.

"The top 10 is intended to bring attention to the biodiversity crisis and the unsung species explorers and museums who continue a 250-year tradition of discovering and describing the millions of kinds of plants, animals and microbes with whom we share this planet," said Quentin Wheeler, an entomologist who directs the International Institute for Species Exploration at ASU.

Members of the international committee who made their selection from more than 200 nominations look for "species that capture our attention because they are unusual or because they have traits that are bizarre," said Mary Liz Jameson, an associate professor at Wichita State University who chaired the international selection committee. "Some of the new species have interesting names; some highlight what little we really know about our planet," she said.

Images and other information about the top 10 new species, including the explorers who made the discoveries and recorded them in calendar year 2011, are online at http://species.asu.edu. Also at the site is a Google world map that pinpoints the location for each of the top 10 new species. This year's top 10 come from Brazil, Myanmar, the Dutch Caribbean, South Africa, Papua New Guinea, Spain, Borneo, Nepal, China and Tanzania.

Describing the discoveries

Sneezing monkey: Since 2000, the number of mammals discovered each year averages about 36. So it was nothing to sneeze at when a new primate came to the attention of scientists conducting a gibbon survey in the high mountains of Myanmar (formerly Burma). Rhinopithecus strykeri, named in honor of Jon Stryker, president and founder of the Arcus Foundation, is the first snub-nosed monkey to be reported from Myanmar and is believed to be critically endangered. It is distinctive for its mostly black fur and white beard and for sneezing when it rains. A video of this species in on YouTube at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d1VuRvRv_UU.

Bonaire banded box jelly: This strikingly beautiful yet venomous jellyfish looks like a box kite with colorful, long tails. The species name, Tamoya ohboya, was selected by a teacher as part of a citizen science project, assuming that people who are stung exclaim "Oh boy!" A video of the species, which has been spotted near the Dutch Caribbean island of Bonaire, is on YouTube at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PcraphPLAxY.

Devil's worm: Measuring about 0.5 millimeters (1/50 or 0.02 inches) these tiny nematodes are the deepest-living terrestrial multicellular organisms on the planet. They were discovered at a depth of 1.3 kilometers (8/10 mile) in a South African gold mine and given the name Halicephalobus mephisto in reference to the Faust legend of the devil because the new species is found at such a depth in the Earth's crust and has survived immense underground pressure as well as high temperatures (37 degrees Celsius or 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit). According to its discoverers, carbon dating indicated that the borehole water where this species lives had not been in contact with Earth's atmosphere for the last 4,000 to 6,000 years.

Night-blooming orchid: A slender night stalker is one way to describe this rare orchid from Papua New Guinea whose flowers open around 10 at night and close early the next morning. It was described by scientists from the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew and Leiden University, who named it Bulbophyllum nocturnum from the Latin word meaning "at night." It is believed to be the first night-blooming orchid recorded among the more than 25,000 known species of orchids.

Parasitic wasp: Ants beware! This new species of parasitic wasp cruises at just one centimeter (less than half an inch) above the ground in Madrid, Spain, in search of its target: ants. With a target in sight, the teensy wasp attacks from the air like a tiny dive bomber, depositing an egg in less than 1/20 of a second. A video of the wasp, named Kollasmosoma sentum, dropping an egg on its target is on YouTube at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bpMGhGMWaTA.

SpongeBob SquarePants mushroom: Named Spongiforma squarepantsii, after the cartoon character SpongeBob SquarePants, this new fungi species looks more like a sponge than a typical mushroom. One of its characteristics is that its fruiting body can be squeezed like a sponge and bounce back to its normal size and shape. This fungus, which smells fruity, was discovered in forests on the island of Borneo in Malaysia.

Nepalese autumn poppy: This vibrant, tall, yellow poppy found in Nepal may have gone undescribed because of its high mountain habitat (10,827 to 13,780 feet). Named Meconopsis autumnalis for the autumn season when the plant flowers, there is evidence that this species was collected before but not recognized as new until intrepid botanists collecting plants miles from human habitation in heavy monsoon rains made the "rediscovery."

Giant millipede: A giant millipede about the length of a sausage bears the common name "wandering leg sausage," which also is at the root of its Latin name: Crurifarcimen vagans. The species holds a new record as the largest millipede (16 centimeters or about 6.3 inches) found in one of the world's biodiversity hotspots, Tanzania's Eastern Arc Mountains. The new species is about 1.5 centimeter (0.6 inch) in diameter with 56 more or less podous rings, or body segments bearing ambulatory limbs, each with two pairs of legs.

Walking cactus (lobopod fossil): Although this new species looks more like a "walking cactus" than an animal at first glance, Diania cactiformis belongs to an extinct group called the armoured Lobopodia, which had wormlike bodies and multiple pairs of legs. The fossil was discovered in Cambrian deposits about 520 million years old from southwestern China and is remarkable in its segmented legs that may indicate a common ancestry with arthropods, including insects and spiders.

Sazima's tarantula: Breathtakingly beautiful, this iridescent hairy blue tarantula is the first new animal species from Brazil to be named on the top 10 list. Pterinopelma sazimai is not the first or only blue tarantula but truly spectacular and from "island" ecosystems on flattop mountains.

Why a top 10 new species list? "The more species we discover, the more amazing the biosphere proves to be, and the better prepared we are to face whatever environmental challenges lie ahead," said the institute's Wheeler, who also is a professor in ASU's School of Sustainability and its School of Life Sciences.

"It is impossible to do justice to the species discoveries made each year by singling out just 10. Imagine being handed 18,000 newly published books packed with fantastic information and stories and before having the opportunity to read them, being asked to pick the best 10," Wheeler said. "With the help of an international committee of experts we do the best we can by picking those with flashy jackets, surprising titles and unexpected plot lines in an effort to draw attention to the whole lot.

"There are many reasons to discover and describe species, and draw attention to this work. Perhaps most obvious is environmental: Unless we know what species exist to begin with, we are powerless to detect, track or mitigate losses of biodiversity," said Wheeler. "Another is biomimetics, turning to species for clues about new and sustainable ways to meet our needs for survival, materials and designs. There is also an intergenerational ethical imperative for species exploration. Because human population levels and activities are driving extinctions, we owe to humans who follow to explore and document our flora and fauna.

"Each species provides a unique chapter in the history of life and unless we discover them now, we stand to lose an enormous amount of irreplaceable evidence about our own origins and relatives," said Wheeler, who is one of an international group of 39 scientists, scholars and engineers who provided a detailed plan in the March 30 issue of the journal Systematics and Biodiversity to chart 10 million species in less than 50 years, and called it a necessary step to sustain the planet's biodiversity.

Marking the May 23 birth of Linnaeus

The annual top 10 new species announcement commemorates the anniversary of the birth of Carolus Linnaeus, who initiated the modern system of plant and animal names and classifications. The 300th anniversary of his birth on May 23 was celebrated worldwide in 2007.

Since Linnaeus initiated the modern systems for naming plants and animals in the 18th century, nearly 2 million species have been named, described and classified. Scientists estimate there are between 8 million and 100 million species on Earth, though most set the number between 8 million to 12 million.

The list of the top 10 new species is issued annually by ASU's International Institute for Species Exploration as part of its public awareness campaign to shine attention on biodiversity and the field of taxonomy. Previous top 10 lists are online at http://species.asu.edu.

Taxon experts pick top 10

"The top 10 new species is all about exploration and discovery," said committee chair Jameson, "and learning more about our planet. Lewis and Clark's discoveries included the pronghorn antelope, prairie dog and prairie rose -- 250 species altogether. But our job is far from over. We need the help of citizens and scientists alike to meet this grand challenge."

Nominations for this year's top 10 list were invited through the species.asu.edu website and also generated by institute staff and committee members.

"We had well over 200 new species nominated this year, and from those, we picked some fascinating "critters," said Jameson.

"Members on the committee come from many places around the world and from many backgrounds, so we bring our own biases to the process; some of us like photosynthesizers, some like predators, some like ocean dwelling critters," she said.

"Committee members had complete freedom in making their choices and developing their own criteria, from unique attributes or surprising facts about the species to peculiar names," Wheeler noted. "I deeply appreciate the taxon experts who gave their knowledge and time to select this year's top 10. By sharing their passion for exploring the biosphere and discovering species, they spread the recognition and appreciation of the critical roles played by taxonomy, botanical gardens and natural history museums in biodiversity exploration and conservation."

In addition to Jameson, a scarab expert, other members on this year's committee included Philippe Bouchet, a marine life expert at the French National Museum of Natural History; Meg Daly, an expert in sea anemones at the Department of Evolution, Ecology and Organismal Biology, Ohio State University; Peter K?mpfer, who expertise is bacteria, Institut f?r Angewandte Mikrobiologie, Justus-Liebig-Universit?t Giessen; Niels Peder Kristensen, an expert in Lepidoptera and basal hexapods at the Natural History Museum of Denmark, Zoologisk Museum, University of Copenhagen; James Macklin, an expert on hawthorns and blackberries at the Agriculture and Agri-food Canada; Ellinor Michel, a mollusk expert at the Department of Zoology, Natural History Museum, London; John Noyes, a chalcidoid wasp expert at the Department of Entomology, Natural History Museum, London; Alan Paton, who is an expert on mints at the International Plant Names Index and Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, UK; Andrew Polaszek, an expert on Hymenoptera (parasitoid wasps) at the Department of Entomology, Natural History Museum, London; Gideon F. Smith, an expert on succulent plants at the Biosystematics Research and Biodiversity Collections, South African National Biodiversity Institute; Antonio Valdecasas, a water mite expert at the Museo Nacional Ciencias Naturales, Madrid, Spain; and Zhi-Qiang Zhang, a mite expert at the New Zealand Arthropod Collection, Landcare Research.

Hawaii verifies Obama's birth records to Arizona

HONOLULU (AP) ? The state of Hawaii has verified President Barack Obama's birth records to Arizona's elections chief after a nearly three-month back and forth that Arizona officials said could have ended without the incumbent's name on its November ballot.

Joshua Wisch, special assistant to Hawaii Attorney General David Louie, told The Associated Press in an email late Tuesday that the matter is resolved after Hawaii gave Arizona the verification it was looking for.

Hawaii ? which has vouched for Obama's birth in the state several times as early as October 2008 ? didn't bow to the request easily. The Aloha State told Arizona Secretary of State Ken Bennett he had to prove he needed the records as part of normal business.

Wisch says Hawaii got what it needed, so it gave Bennett's office the verification.

It's not immediately clear whether the information will satisfy Bennett. Bennett spokesman Matthew Roberts said the office received the verification and planned to comment Wednesday.

Roberts did not say whether the information would end the flap with Obama's name on the ballot.

Bennett said during a radio interview earlier Tuesday that he had reworded his request to Hawaii and expected to get a response within two days.

The development came the same day Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio defended sending one of his deputies to Hawaii to accompany an official in his volunteer posse that is investigating Obama's birth certificate, despite earlier saying no taxpayer money was being spent on the probe.

The sheriff said Tuesday that taxpayers won't ultimately foot the bill because the posse, which so far has used $40,000 in donations to pay for the probe, will reimburse his office for the deputy's trip to Hawaii this week.

Arpaio said the deputy who was sent to Hawaii was there for security reasons, which the sheriff declined to discuss.

"Even if it was costing the taxpayers money, we are talking about a criminal investigation into possible fraud and forgery on government documents," the sheriff said.

The sheriff launched the investigation last summer and said in March that there was probable cause to believe Obama's long-form birth certificate, released by the White House more than a year ago, is a computer-generated forgery and that the president's Selective Service card was most likely a forgery.

Speculation about Obama's birthplace has swirled among conservatives for years. So-called "birthers" maintain that Obama is ineligible to hold the country's highest elected office because, they contend, he was born in Kenya, his father's homeland.

Hawaii officials have repeatedly confirmed Obama's citizenship, and Obama released a copy of his long-form birth certificate more than a year ago in an attempt to quell citizenship questions. Courts also have rebuffed lawsuits over the issue.

The Arizona Republic first reported that Arpaio had sent the deputy to Hawaii.

Democratic state Sen. Steve Gallardo, a critic of the sheriff, said Arpaio has misplaced priorities when he focuses on the president's birth certificate, while his own office had failed to adequately investigate hundreds of sex-crimes cases over a three-year period ending in 2007.

"The cost of this trip to Hawaii ought to come out of this re-election campaign because this is politics," Gallardo said. "It's political grandstanding."

Arpaio said health officials in Hawaii refused to talk to his deputy and posse investigator on Monday, though an assistant attorney general came out to talk to the investigators.

"They won't have anything to do with us," Arpaio said.

Janice Okubo, spokeswoman for the Hawaii State Department of Health, said two men dressed in business suits from Arpaio's department sat down with deputies from the health department and attorney general's office in a conference room Monday.

The men identified themselves as being from the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office and provided their badges and business cards when asked, Okubo said.

"They said they were conducting an investigation," Okubo said.

Okubo said the Hawaii officials told the men they had to show why they needed the information as part of ordinary business ? a response similar to that given to Bennett last week when he publicly pushed his request.

Growing Demand for Strategic Workforce Planning Leaders in ...

By the Conference Board, Special for US Daily Review.

As organizations continue to confront the long- and short-term impact of the Great Recession, businesses recognize that, in many cases, it is crucial to implement a strategic workforce plan, or a strategy to realign human capital needs to match the overall business strategy.? Because strategic workforce planning (SWP) is still a new methodology, there is no established profile of the successful SWP leader and no proven process for finding such a person, according to a recent Executive Action Report from The Conference Board.

?The shortage of experienced SWP leaders is an issue for businesses looking to deploy a three-to-five year SWP process,? said?Mary B. Young, D.B.A., Principal Researcher, Human Capital, The Conference Board. ?Interestingly, our research shows that while many SWP leaders have HR experience, that?s not always the case. In fact, effective SWP leaders are likely to have diverse work experiences within and outside of HR.?

There are 10 skills and competencies that SWP leaders must have to be effective.?Business knowledge, analytical expertise and change leadership?are essential requirements that prospective SWP leaders must have.??Collaboration, stature and credibility, intellectual capacity, communications skills, scenario-planning skills, diverse experience?and?belief in SWP?are seven important factors that individual SWP leaders must possess or must develop to be effective.

Surprisingly, many SWP leaders have spent at least some of their careers outside the human resources (HR) function, working in finance, corporate planning, sales, marketing or as a line manager. That background helps them demonstrate the?businessvalue of SWP, rather than presenting it as an HR exercise. SWP translates business strategy into HR strategy to ensure that workforce decisions and investments are aligned with business priorities.

And as ?big data? ? or volumes of data ? are becoming increasingly important in many areas of the business, there?s a growing demand for expertise in analyzing and using data for competitive advantage. Companies seeking an SWP leader may not only find few ready candidates; they may have to compete with other functions that are also hunting for analytical talent.

Home Staging for Serious Sellers: Home Staging "Don's"

I'd like to post a few photos here occasionally, as I come across them. Some of these will be from my own collection of photos from homes I've photographed, some will be photos that are NOT mine, but I've seen on the mls, and pulled to use as examples of what NOT to do when you're selling your house.

First up, this photo of a kitchen that's not all that bad, but from the standpoint of staging, as well as real estate photography, the gigantic red missile-shaped trash can is an all-around no no. ?Photographically, it overpowers literally everything else in the photo, screaming for attention. ?And when a prospective buyer is there in person, it will do the same thing. Add to that, the large amount of floorspace it is sucking up, and it's undeniable - this thing needs to go!

Solar Eclipse Inspires Silly 'Twilight' Tweets

Twilight Tuesday illuminates the funniest Twitter comments about Sunday's eclipse.
By Kara Warner

Solar eclipse in Tokyo, Japan on May 21st
Photo: Bloomberg

Because we're still months away from the release of there's a considerable lull in the world of "Twilight" news. There's a good chance we'll be reading a few "Twilight"-centric headlines on June 3, the day of our MTV Movie Awards, for which "Breaking Dawn: Part 1" is up for Movie of the Year and Best Kiss, but until then, we're playing a waiting game.

However, just because there's a lack of "Twilight"-themed videos and interviews doesn't mean the very dedicated fanbase stops talking about their favorite franchise. And never underestimate the ability of a "Twilight" fan to bring up the subject in any conversation, particularly when said conversation involves a natural phenomenon that ties into Stephanie Meyer's fantastical world.

Case in point: the recent partial solar and lunar eclipses, which inspired so many witty and sarcastic "Twilight"-related reactions and comments via Twitter that they deserved to be the subject of this week's Twilight Tuesday. Here are some favorite tweets on the subject:

"Twilight fans, I hear if you look at the #eclipse tonight you'll see vampires and werewolves frolicking. Or go blind. Whichever," tweeted the clever person behind the often-quoted The Dark Lord (@Lord_Voldermort7) account, a.k.a. the chief villain of the Harry Potter books/film franchise.

target="_blank">@Alvaradomusic offered some helpful advice to a stranger who lamented missing the opportunity to view the partial covering of the sun: "It's cool...just go rent the latest Twilight movie," he tweeted.

Meanwhile, target="_blank">YouTube star Kingsley (jokingly?) admitted that all the talk about the eclipse led him to a revelation of sorts about the third movie in the franchise. "Everybody was talking about the solar eclipse and I was like 'Oh, that's the image on the 3rd Twilight DVD box,' " he wrote.

target="_blank">Dan Munz wins the award for the best reference commentary because his tweet was creative, involved a visual aid and made a funny pun! "Wow, this eclipse is truly stunning. I can even make out a bit of twilight on the edge."

The eclipse to which he referred was a "Twilight" product tie-in on a pack of Eclipse gum. Like I said, it's punny! A funny pun.

Check out everything we've got on "Breaking Dawn - Part 2."

GLASS HAMMER If music review by kev rowland

5 stars Over the years the duo of Steve Babb and Fred Schendel have had a somewhat rotating door policy to musicians and styles, but here they have gone back to what nay fans are going to love, namely classic progressive rock in the style of Yes. Now, it is in the style of as opposed to going out and copying what has gone before ? and surely they have been paid the ultimate accolade by that band, as not only has Jon Anderson appeared on a previous album but the vocalist on this 2010 release is Jon Davidson ? who is currently the newest member of Yes, replacing Benoit David for the 2012 Australasian tour. Now, as I was lucky enough to see Yes in Auckland recently I know just how good Jon D is in a live environment, so it is of course no surprise to hear him to be more than up to the task in the studio.

They may not have a Roger Dean cover, but in Tom Kuhn they have someone who again has prepared something in the style of as opposed to just rehashing something that came out thirty or more years ago. I read one review where a comparison is made between Glass Hammer and Citizen Cain and that makes quite a bit of sense ? when CC was releasing albums in the early Nineties there was quite a lot of flak as it was stated that they were just doing what Gabriel had done with Genesis, but it has to be remembered that Peter had long left the band and the Genesis of 1992 wasn't anything like CC. Now, I really like 'Fly From Here' but this probably has more in common with the traditional Yes sound than that ? and after 20 years GH still has the same two people at it's heart yet it took far less time than that for Chris Squire to go through two drummers, three keyboard players, two singers and three guitarists.

Anyone playing this or writing about this is going to compare Glass Hammer to Yes, but that isn't a bad thing. The question is not why does that have to take place, but more why on earth isn't this band better known and spoken about with the same reverence? This is a great album, whatever name is on the cover ? if you like Yes then this is five stars and essential, if you don't then don't bother, but it is your loss.

L.A. Unified a rare haven for health teachers

As if on cue, all faces turn alertly toward the front of the classroom where Bridget Brownell has set up a slide show at Taft High School in Woodland Hills.

They are about to view diseased sex organs.

"First," she said, "let me take attendance, and then I will shock you."

Brownell belongs to a declining breed: She's a certified health instructor leading a one-semester health class in a California public high school. The Los Angeles Unified School District nearly killed health as a required course, to focus more on its new mandate that all students complete college-prep classes. Other school systems have stopped requiring health class simply to save money.

With or without a health course, California high schools are required by law to teach students about AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases; they face penalties if they don't.

Schools also are supposed to teach such topics as nutrition, safety, mental health awareness and about drug, alcohol and tobacco abuse. But generally there's no penalty for skipping these topics, and experts believe many have long done so. They also said more schools and districts are dropping health class, although there's no official tabulation.

In interviews at several high schools, some students said they didn't learn much new in health. A majority, however, said they found it valuable, even if they were initially skeptical. Several also admitted they probably would not have taken it if they didn't have to.

Long Beach Unified last year made health an elective rather than a requirement, to save money. Numerous other school systems also don't require the class. Nor do many independent charter schools.

"When Long Beach lost their health requirement, it was a big blow," said Mary Marks, a health education consultant at the California Department of Education. "Health has been one of the early and continuing hits as money has gotten tighter and tighter."

In L.A. Unified, the class has been eliminated at most high schools managed by a nonprofit under the control of L.A. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, falling victim to finding more time to help struggling ninth-graders ? the grade level at which health is typically taught.

"Less than 10% of our kids are at grade level in math," said Marshall Tuck, head of the mayor's Partnership for Los Angeles Schools. "If you don't get them caught up early, they're going to fall further behind. All of us are forced to make really difficult decisions."

Instead of a dedicated class, these schools, like those in Long Beach and other districts, incorporate health topics into other classes, which can extend health education beyond ninth grade, said officials who've dropped the requirement.

The mayor's schools also have appealed for help from outside organizations, such as Planned Parenthood, which provides counseling and referrals at Roosevelt High.

About 400 certified instructors are teaching health in L.A. Unified, with the number trending downward, said Timothy Kordic, who heads the district's HIV/AIDS Prevention Unit.

"Health is probably one of the only classes in the entire curriculum that is about kids," said longtime Birmingham High health teacher Wayne Sink, who's retired but still volunteers at the school. "It is all about their lives and what is going on about diet, nutrition, puberty, sexuality, dating ? all those things they were going through. It's vital."

In sophomore Kelly Medina's health class last year, "they gave us a 'baby' to take care of," she said. If students hit the "baby," "we would get an 'F' or a 'D.' I learned not to have babies when we're teens."

At her school, Jordan High in Watts, there's no health class this year. The campus is split between a school run by the mayor's nonprofit and a separate academy managed by Green Dot Public Schools, an independent charter operator. Green Dot incorporates the required health units in other classes, so there are more resources and time for college prep courses.

Topics in Brownell's class, meanwhile, run the gamut: nutrition, anatomy and physiology, bullying, healthy decision-making, birth control, mental health, anger and stress management, and tolerance ? L.A. Unified pioneered teaching students to accept gay, bisexual and transgender peers.

L.A. schools Supt. John Deasy canceled plans to drop the health requirement after resistance from the Board of Education and after teachers, parents and students descended on board meetings.

"It's the course in which we're able to deal with a host of important issues that I don't have other ways to deal with," Deasy said.

Brownell's arsenal includes a text, workbook, and materials and props she's assembled, such as eyeglasses that simulate the reduced perceptions of a drunk driver.

Her students recently painted a "safe sex" mural on campus, and they engage in role-playing, "like one of us wanted to have sex and the other didn't," said junior Alex Sandoval, 16.

Students said they appreciate Brownell's expertise, availability and, as needed, confidentiality.

In her class, Taft sophomore Jessica Bandarizadeh said that "the first thing that came up was 'vagina' and 'penis,' and we were laughing so hard ? it was so embarrassing." But by the end, the 16-year-old said, "We were so comfortable speaking about everything. It was almost like we grew up."

Her immigrant parents are not comfortable with such conversations.

"There's no sex before marriage in their eyes," Jessica said. "Even if you have trust with your parents, there are some things you can't talk about. I think my parents are happy I'm taking health."

A Family Circle Series: Fathers of Our Flesh ? Conservative ...

By?Leslie Diestelkamp

From the very beginning God ordained that the husband should be the head of the house and, in that position, he should exercise responsibility in guiding the entire family. His duty in such does not include harsh, dictatorial rule but it does include diligent dedication to the tasks of oversight. Even Paul admonished, ?Fathers provoke not your children to wrath, but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord? (Eph. 6:4). Thus Paul established three principles of fatherhood:

1. Generally it is the father, not the mother, who should shoulder the responsibilities of oversight. Fathers are to set the course of action for the whole family. They are to chart the direction of family behavior. Fathers cannot please God if they relinquish their rights nor if they try to shift their obligations. Neither mothers, school teachers, preachers nor any others can replace the father as custodian of family life.

2. But fathers are to direct their families with discretion and wisdom, lest they be provoked to wrath. Decisions must be studied and wise, fair and just. The father?s conduct and character must be such that he deserves respect and that his word is honored in the family circle. With kindness and humility, yet with resolution and firmness he must exercise patient, loving leadership in the home that will inspire the children to follow and to obey without rebellion or malice.

3. The nurturing that children must receive is to be provided by the father-that is, he must conduct the family affairs in such a manner that the total impact of family life will be spiritually beneficial. Everything that relates to the development of the child is included in ?nurturing,? and the emphasis is to be ?in the Lord,? that is in learning, appreciating and applying the will of God. Over and above his duty as a provider for the physical necessities of the family, the father is to be the provider of spiritual nourishment and exercise.

Heb. 12:8, 9 (?We have had fathers of our flesh which corrected us, and we gave them reverence?) suggests proper action for the father and at the same time proper response by the children. But the ?reverence? or respect that is suggested must be earned by the father through the integrity, honesty, justice and consistency of the correction he administers. And perhaps most failures in this regard are not from lack of ability but from lack of devotion to the duties of fatherhood.

Edgar A. Guest said, ?There are fathers who are busy and so weighted down with cares, That they haven?t time to listen to a little child?s affairs.? Indeed, undoubtedly the greatest weakness of modern fatherhood is the unwillingness to look upon the responsibilities with sufficient seriousness and devotion. Parental neglect must rank as the blight of our society today, the greatest cause of delinquency, the source of rebellion and the cause of failure in the family circle. Fathers curse the times in which we live, blame the government, accuse the school system and look everywhere for an alibi for failure, yet, the cause of their parental failures lies in their own hearts, their own lives, and their own conduct.

We do not know what kind of life Enoch lived before he became a father, but afterward the Bible tells us ?And Enoch walked with God after he begat Methuselah. . . ? (Gen. 5:22). Joshua demonstrated the proper attitude and the determination to lead his family when he said to the people, ?Choose you this day whom you will serve . . . . . but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord? (Josh. 24:15). Likewise, Cornelius ?. . . feared God with all his house? (Acts 10:2), showing that his duties as a Roman officer did not prevent fulfillment of his responsibility to his family.

The purpose of this chapter is not to try to list all the big and little things that are involved in proper fatherhood, nor to spell out every detail of specific obligations, for these vary from one family to another and even from one child to another, and none of us knows all the answers. But the purpose of this chapter is to try to get fathers to realize their God-given obligations. I believe such men will then be fully capable of discharging their duties-if they can just be challenged ? to devote themselves to the task. Fathers who really want to guide, lead and nurture their children will find the right way! Sincerity of purpose is much more important than a familiarity with all the books men may write on the subject of parenthood.

As we look to the future of our country and especially to the future of the Lord?s church, we must look to the parents-not to the children as so many would have us believe. Indeed,

?The lambs will follow the sheep, you know,

Wherever the sheep may stray,

When the sheep go wrong, it will not be long,

Till the lambs are as wrong as they.

?And so for the sheep we earnestly plead,

For the sake of the lambs, today,

If the sheep are lost, what a terrible cost,

The lambs will have to pay? (Anonymous).

Say not, my friend, that our children hold the future in their hands. Rather let us acknowledge that we, the parents, do indeed hold in our hands the earthly and eternal destinies of our children. If they (the children) are the men and women of tomorrow, we (the parents) are determining what those men and women will be. Next: ?Mother: The Heart of the Family.?

Mariela Castro In San Francisco: Cuban President's Daughter To Meet With Gay Rights Groups

SAN FRANCISCO -- Cuban first daughter Mariela Castro is planning to meet with San Francisco's lesbian, gay, transgender and bisexual community during a U.S. visit next week that is being opposed by some Cuban-American politicians.

The San Francisco LGBT Center said Friday that it would host the meeting Wednesday night, the day before Castro is scheduled to lead a panel at a conference organized by the Latin American Studies Association.

The 50-year-old daughter of Cuban President Raul Castro is a noted gay rights advocate in her country and head of Cuba's National Center for Sex Education.

Gloria La Riva, an organizer with a coalition of anti-war groups called ANSWER SF, says Castro also is scheduled to give a talk at San Francisco General Hospital on Wednesday afternoon about Cuba's policies toward transgender people.

Early political spats suggest nothing off-limits

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The early border skirmishes of Campaign 2012 are reviving questions about one candidate's former pastor and shining a spotlight on the other's high school hijinks. Can a fresh round of questions about President Barack Obama's birth certificate be far behind?

In a campaign year when voters have declared the economy their top concern, Obama and Mitt Romney are on notice that there's no statute of limitations on the issues or conduct that might be used against them. And there's sure to be somebody with money or other means to insert even low-threshold matters into the political dialogue.

"It's open season," says Eric Dezenhall, an expert on crisis management. "This is going to be very rough."

Thursday's disclosure that a Republican-leaning super PAC was considering a $10 million ad campaign highlighting Obama's past links to inflammatory preacher Jeremiah Wright was just the latest evidence that if there ever were limits on what was fair game in a campaign, they're largely history.

That's thanks to a flood of new money into politics, the ease of spreading political attacks via the Internet and changing attitudes about what's an appropriate topic for discussion. Long gone are the days when candidates' extramarital escapades were off-limits, photographers avoided taking pictures of Franklin D. Roosevelt in a wheelchair and a few newspapers and TV stations acted as gatekeepers.

The New York Times quoted backers of this year's Wright ad proposal as aiming to "do exactly what John McCain would not let us do" in the 2008 campaign.

Romney repudiated the Wright plan, as did the super PAC financier weighing it. Nonetheless, Obama's campaign accused Romney of refusing to "stand up to the most extreme voices in the Republican Party" and the president's supporters were happy to associate Romney with what campaign strategist David Axelrod called the "purveyors of slime."

McCain, the 2008 GOP nominee, spoke out forcefully during the campaign four years ago against efforts to use Wright's provocative speeches against Obama, and the issue largely subsided. But since then, a series of court cases has cleared the way for an onslaught of campaign ads from outside groups seeking to influence elections.

Such so-called super PACs can be a megaphone for matters that would have gotten less attention in the past, and still allow candidates to deny they're involved.

But outside messengers who do the dirty work in campaigns are nothing new in presidential politics. Democrat Michael Dukakis in 1988 was the target of an infamous outside ad about a furloughed rapist named Willie Horton. Democrat John Kerry in 2004 saw his record as a Vietnam War hero mischaracterized and used against him by the outside group Swift Boat Veterans for Truth.

Political historian Evan Cornog, author of "The Power and the Story," said the staying power of a particular issue or charge usually depends on whether it jibes with the public's understanding of a candidate.

"We are addicted to narratives, and if something fits with the story, it's going to get some traction," says Cornog. "A good political operative will have a fairly good sense of what will work and what will not work."

Both sides are experiencing this in real time:

?Questions about Romney's bad behavior toward classmates during his high school years, revealed in a recent Washington Post article, are being used to reinforce the profile that Romney's critics have tried to create of the GOP candidate as a corporate bully. The Democratic National Committee circulated the Post article and highlighted just one sentence about Romney's behavior: "It was vicious."

?Questions about Obama's ties to his former preacher's incendiary rhetoric about America and about whether the president was truly born in Hawaii and is a Christian fit with broader efforts to paint Obama as radically different from most Americans. Romney earlier this year told an interviewer, "I'm not sure which is worse, him listening to Reverend Wright or him saying that we must be a less Christian nation." That was a reference to remarks in which Obama actually did not promote a less Christian nation but observed growing religious diversity in the U.S.

When something nicely fits with the profile that one side or the other is trying to build, it may endure long after a question has been duly asked and answered.

Questions about the validity of Obama's Hawaii birth certificate, for example, have been widely discredited, they but keep popping up. Donald Trump and Texas Gov. Rick Perry both toyed with it during the presidential primaries. A poll last May, after Obama had released his detailed Hawaii birth certificate, found that a third of Americans still thought he might have been born elsewhere or said they didn't know.

Cornog points to plenty of positive aspects to the free-wheeling exchange of ideas and information allowed by a broad variety of news sources and the Internet but also has a warning: "If you enter an age in which you have elective belief systems independent of fact, you have a problem for your political world."

School Turns Engineering Faculty into Superheroes

The George Washington University engineering school's Pinhas Ben-Tzvi as RobotronMan

A recent survey by Intel found that only 28 percent of teenagers had ever considered becoming engineers and that only 5 percent associated engineering with the word ?cool.? That?s not terribly surprising given that engineering ranks in the bottom half of professions with which teens are familiar, falling below teacher, doctor, nurse, police officer, chef, lawyer, ?musician, professional athlete, scientist, and computer programmer. (But, surprisingly, above journalist, politician and stock broker).

The good news is that giving teens even a small amount of information about what engineers do helps significantly boost their interest. After reading that ?engineers were to thank for saving the Chilean miners who were trapped inside their mine for 69 days,? 52 percent said they?d be much or somewhat more likely to consider a career in engineering, according to the survey.

This is where a new series of comic strips from The George Washington University comes in. Its School of Engineering and Applied Science recently launched an effort to boost student enrollment. In the process, it hit upon an excellent way to translate what engineers do to the general public and to teenagers and to make the profession seem pretty exciting: it turned its faculty into superheroes and gave them starring roles in a series of online comic strips.

In the debut strip, ?The Adventures of RobotronMan,? a mechanical engineering professor is called away from class to help rescue earthquake victims. ??This sounds like a job for RobotronMan,? he says, before transforming into his caped alter ego and flying to his destination. ?If I don?t make it back for my 12:25 class ? someone cover me.? Once on location, RobotronMan unleashes a swarm of tiny robots that help locate victims and lift heavy rubble to free them.

The comic series is not the first ?cool jobs? treatment of scientists I?ve seen (here?s one of my favorite efforts from last year?s World Science Festival), but I think it?s pretty imaginative.

Lindsay Lohan Rents in Beverly Hills for Far Less than $25K ...

Thursday, May 17, 2012, by Rob Bear

LLohan_BHLSE_PICS2.jpg

Britain's Daily Mail reported earlier this week that embattled Hollywood starlet Lindsay Lohan was renting this hillside villa in Beverly Hills for $25K per month. While this is indeed Lohan's walled retreat, she is apparently paying far less than the claimed $25K for the pleasure of staying there. According to E! and The Real Estalker, Lohan, who dropped out of her rehab program at the Betty Ford Clinic due to financial difficulties, is probably spending more like $9K per month for the glamorous, if not gigantic, pad. The house does have plenty of space for Lohan's family, with four bedrooms and five baths, but few flashy features beyond the sizable swimming pool.
