Critics have expressed their dismay, with one fashion designer flat out stating that the outfits are not attractive at all, and questioning just what the designer and the Grand Prix committee were thinking. The neckline on the outfits is short and a black blouse covers any areas of the bosom, complete with knee-high leather boots and a black top hat. Hardly what you would expect from Formula 1 pit girls; it is something that you should expect to see, however, if you find yourself in Melbourne at the pro F1 tracks any time in the near future.

Cardinal-designate speaks of joy, love _ and blood

VATICAN CITY (AP) ? The top U.S. bishop, Cardinal-designate Timothy Dolan, has told a meeting of the pope and his fellow cardinals that they must spread the faith with joy, love ? and blood if necessary.

Dolan, archbishop of New York, gave the keynote address Friday to a gathering of the cardinals who will participate in the ceremony Saturday to bring Dolan and 21 other cardinals into the elite men's club that will elect the next pope.

Dolan said the Vatican No. 2 had told him to speak about spreading the faith in a secular world since New York was the "capital of a secular culture." Dolan said while there's "graphic secularism" in the Big Apple, "it is also a very religious city."

He said cardinals wear scarlet to show they are willing to shed blood for the faith.

The Wall Street Journal reports that Verizon and AT&T will sell iPads for their 4G networks

Harder, better, faster, stronger? The?new iPad 3 devices on their way to store shelves could be all of those, with emphasis on faster. According to the?Wall Street Journal, the new iPad 3 will come ready to run on fourth-generation?LTE networks.

Specifically, according to the report, both AT&T and Verizon will be getting iPads capable of running on their faster?4G wireless data networks. These iPads will also be capable of running on 3G networks ? an absolute necessity, given the number of people still outside of 4G network range.

It's unknown whether or not Sprint and T-Mobile will be getting a version of the iPad as well. Both carriers declined to comment for the?WSJ story.

While the?WSJ has proven a reliable source of insider Apple info in the past, it's important to keep in mind that this information has not yet been confirmed by?Apple. Until we have confirmation, any report on the next generation of the hit tablet should be taken with a grain of salt.

And it's amazing we can connect on so many levels thanks to the power of the Internet.

Yesterday I posted how proud I was for?the last 5 years of helping thousands?upon thousands of people get things done and the truth of the matter is that I'm loving this job not only for running a successful software business but mostly for being able to interact with all of you. It had been gray and rainy for about 73 straight days here in Steamboat last spring and everyone was little cranky. It?s like living inside Tupperware. I was fixing to turn 55 in a month and that retirement organization that shall remain nameless was hunting me down like a wounded deer. I still get my period but I have the enlarged middle of a matron along with chicken skin and back fat. When I walk the dog in the park I think people take pity on me when they smile, like ?Oh geez, her life?s going down the toilet.?

So I foolishly decided to try to talk to my hubby about my existential anxiety which is the kind of stupid decision a gal makes after 73 days of rain. The car is always a good place to talk because it?s like we have them hostage. I did that with my boys, teaching them to drive. ?You need a licensed driver, son. Your butt is mine.? As they white-knuckled their way through stop signs, I?d be having the ?sex talk? exhorting them to ?Always put a helmet on that soldier!? and such. They were a hostile but captive audience, like any guy in a car, so I decided to broach my crankiness with Bob when we were pulling out of a parking lot in town.

?I?m really feeling kinda blue,? I said softly, ?You know, not really like myself.?

?They shouldn?t allow left turns out of this parking lot,? he responded.

Mother of God, what was I thinking?

When I was very young and married to Husband #1 he was in the Lion?s Club ? you know, the old age crowd that does good things and wears funny hats. Well, I was 23 and had to be a ?Lion Tamer? when I went to their dinners and really, heavy drinking or suicide was the only way out. We even went on a Lion?s Romp to the Poconos one weekend and of course the old people didn?t want to ski or anything so I got loaded. That night, at the Lion?s Ball we sat at a table in the back when some horrible singer came on stage and everyone started talking.

?Oh, come on folks!? she chirped, ?Just give me a chance!?

It was noisy in there and I was very drunk and with the righteousness of an idiot sot I stood up, slammed both palms on the table and said in a really loud voice,

?F*** you! We don?t have to listen to this s***!?

In slow motion, 400 Lions and Lion Tamers turned around and looked at me. You could hear a pin drop in that ballroom. I swayed but held my ground. Drooled a little, probably. We were asked to leave that night, but I subsequently got invited to a lot of parties.

On the way home from the baby shower I decided to drown my sorrows in a book store. A little blue book grabbed me, titled ?F IN EXAMS: The Very Best Totally Wrong Answers.? I opened it, and soon was snorting in the aisle. Here?s an example of the biology questions and real answers from high school kids:

Me and Chopper went to the park, and all the neighborhood kids came teeming out onto the streets riding bikes and skateboards, kicking soccer balls. My neighbor, holding her one year old, waved the baby?s hand at me.

?Hey, you?re starting the garden!? I said.

?Yep,? she replied, ?The lettuce is yours for the picking.?

And that?s the way it goes, folks. The agony and the ecstasy of being a human bean. As Roseanne Roseannadana used to say: ?If it?s not one thing, it?s another.? Tupperware, left turns, girlfriends and chocolate mousse; chicken skin and kids on bikes. My neighbor offers me lettuce not yet even grown and I get to start all over again.

Sony's Hirai to extend PlayStation strategy (Reuters)

TOKYO (Reuters) ? Incoming CEO Kazuo Hirai aims to re-shape Sony Corp by linking hardware and software through online networks -- a model he used at its PlayStation unit -- dismissing any suggestion the battered brand would revert to a gadget-centered strategy under his management.

In the meantime, he said, he would focus on paring costs at its TV unit and look to squeeze expenses elsewhere to return Sony to profit.

The Sony Computer Entertainment model "is a bigger concept we can grow into a bigger space," Hirai, 51, said in a group interview at the company's Tokyo headquarters. "Hardware drives software and software drives hardware," he added, referring to online sales of games and other content PlayStation owners.

Hirai oversaw the phenomenal rise of the PlayStation gaming system in the United States and since last March headed Sony's consumer products and services business.

He didn't say what changes the wider application of that strategy would have on Sony, which unlike its consumer electronics rivals such as Samsung Electronics and Apple Inc, owns significant content in movies, music and games software.

A more immediate task for Hirai, however, is to stem losses with cost savings that will add to cuts made by outgoing boss, Howard Stringer.

Hirai formally succeeds Stringer as CEO on April 1, with the once-stellar consumer electronics brand heading for what it warned last week would be a much bigger-than-expected $2.9 billion annual loss, its fourth in a row.

The surge of red ink has put Hirai under intense pressure from investors and ratings agencies to quickly staunch losses at the sprawling electronics group. Hirai pledged not to flinch from tough decisions to trim costs and renewed a promise to return the TV business to profit in two years.

"We have to make some hard decisions on where there are some redundancies and reduce the fixed costs in a variety of different areas," he said, pointing to sales units in Japan, Europe and the United States, supply chains and Tokyo headquarters functions as areas where cuts could be made.

Credit rating agency Standard and Poor's on Wednesday cut its long-term debt rating on Sony and warned it may drop it another notch within a year if Hirai fails to stem TV losses and deliver a significant boost to profitability. [ID:nL4E8D861P] Sony was also downgraded by Moody's last month.

The TV division has lost more than $11 billion over eight fiscal years. Together, Sony, Panasonic and Sharp expect to lose $17 billion this year alone, highlighting the savaging of Japan's electronics industry by foreign rivals led by Samsung, weak demand and a strong yen.

A goal for Sony to end that bleeding in two years was "tracking where we said it would be at the end of the year, or a little ahead of that," Hirai said.

Better products would, he said, add as much as 40 billion yen ($520 million) in profit, with cost improvements adding another 50 billion yen, as part of a strategy he described as "defense and offense."

As well as weak global TV demand, Sony has been hammered by last year's flooding in Thailand that ruptured supply chains, a big one-off charge for exiting a flat-panel joint venture with Samsung, and smart competition from Apple and Samsung that has squeezed market share in TVs, smartphones and other gadgets.

Hirai predicted that LCD technology would remain the main battlefield in TVs for at least three years, before next generation technology takes hold.

STRATEGY ROLE

Hirai has yet to reveal his management line-up, naming only Tadashi Saito, a former Sony chief financial officer at Sony Electronics in the United States, as the company's first chief strategy officer since 2005.

Saito will work with senior managers "to formulate strategies for group companies overall, as well as giving us a lot of input and advice on M&A activity," Hirai said.

Hiroshi Yoshioka, previously identified by Stringer as one of "Four Musketeers" who could succeed him, along with Hirai, will take Sony into the medical imaging business and head up the group's innovation center, "seeking out new business opportunities," Hirai said.

As of Thursday's close, Sony shares had gained 13 percent to a 14-week high of 1,544 yen since Hirai was named as the next CEO, outperforming a 2.1 percent gain on the benchmark Nikkei average.

The stock, which slumped more than 60 percent during Stringer's seven-year reign, was down 0.4 percent in early trading Friday.

A Sony veteran of 28 years, Hirai was credited with reviving the PlayStation gaming operations through aggressive cost-cutting, in competition with Nintendo's Wii and Microsoft's Xbox.

A year ago, Hirai, a fluent English speaker, was promoted to head the consumer products and services business, overseeing Sony's network operations. He was also at the forefront of efforts to counter hackers who accessed Sony customers' personal details.

He takes over after a period of cost-cutting by Stringer, a rare foreign CEO in Japan who sold off TV factories in Spain, Slovakia and Mexico and outsourced more than half of the group's production to outside companies, including Hon Hai Precision Industry, a Taiwanese contract electronics maker whose key customer is Apple.

'Shore' spinoff gets thumbs up from Jersey City

Snooki and JWoww will move inland from the "Shore" to Jersey City for their spin-off.

New Jersey is a big state. Big enough to contain both "Jersey Shore" haters and fans.

And the new ground zero for fans? Jersey City, otherwise known as the soon-to-be home of Snooki and JWoww's "Shore" spinoff.

"We welcome any media attention to our city," Mayor Jerramiah T. Healy told WNYW-TV after approving a permit for the show. "We want the world to see what we have here in Jersey City, and if the two young ladies here bring their film cameras, abide by the laws and regulations, I think it'll work out great for all concerned. And my concern is to market this city."

But does Healy know what he's let himself in for? He put emphasis on how the ladies will have to obey the laws, which Snooki, who arrested for public drunkenness during "Shore's" third season, hasn't always done.

Healy seems prepared for such events should they arise, noting that the women will have "a couple of Jersey City cops following them to make sure that they're not bothered by others and that they stay on the right path." He hastened to add that those police officers will be paid for by the show producers, 495 Productions, "not the Jersey City taxpayers."

The approval comes after the mayor of Hoboken refused to issue permits for a spin-off and gave the show a smackdown at the same time earlier this month. Mayor Dawn Zimmer called the production, "an attractive nuisance causing crowds to assemble at every hour of the day and night, additional traffic congestion, attendant noise associated with large public gatherings and unacceptable lessening of the quality of life for the local residents and businesses."

Healy doesn't share those concerns.

"If these young ladies can pull this film off, and this show off without bothering their neighbors, without breaking any of our laws here in the state of New Jersey, I think it can be a good thing for all concerned," he said.

So where will Snooks and JWoww call home in Jersey City? According to the New York Daily News, the producers' permit allows them to shoot for six weeks in a converted two-story former firehouse. Mayor Healy revealed it was "a stone's throw from City Hall."

JOHANNESBURG ? South Africa's president announced ambitious infrastructure projects Thursday, laying out his plans for creating jobs and hope in nation harder hit than most in Africa by global recession.

"The massive investment in infrastructure must leave more than just power stations, rail lines, dams and roads," Zuma said in his nationally televised state of the nation address to parliament in Cape Town. "It must industrialize the country, generate skills and boost much needed job creation."

His plan spanned the country, from a dam in the southwestern homeland of former President Nelson Mandela to a rail and road network and new water systems to boost prospects for mining in Limpopo, a province in the far northeast that is among the nation's poorest and often pointed to as among the most corrupt.

He did not say how much the program would cost. His finance minister may offer details in a budget speech later this month.

Zuma was elected in 2009 to a five-year term, taking office just as the global recession hit South Africa, which is sub-Saharan Africa's biggest economy but has been burdened by high rates of poverty, unemployment and inequality despite years of buoyant growth. Across Africa, the recession had been delayed, leading many to initially think Africa would be spared.

Zuma was applauded during his speech when he mentioned unemployment figures of 23.9 percent released earlier in the week. The figure, for the end of 2011, would spark panic in the West, but represented the biggest growth in employment for South Africa since its 2009 recession. Government statisticians said that 365,000 more South Africans were working in the fourth quarter of 2011 than in the fourth quarter of the previous year.

Zuma's African National Congress party in 2010 set itself a daunting target of creating 5 million jobs by 2020. But its own finance minister has estimated that would require growth of over 6 percent a year. South Africa has been and is predicted to continue to be well short of that, in part because of the global recession.

Zuma spoke hours after Greece struck a deal to make deep cuts in government jobs and spending to help ward off a default, and perhaps calm the economic storms that have buffeted Europe. While the immediate danger appears to have passed, the future for Greece and the rest of Europe remains uncertain.

Europe is the second biggest market for South African exports, after China.

South Africa has not only sub-Saharan Africa's largest economy, but its most developed infrastructure and most skilled work force, Ajen Sita, chief executive officer for Africa for Ernst & Young, told reporters recently. That has made South Africa more attractive to Europe than other African countries, so Europe's troubles have hit South Africa harder, Sita said. South Africa exports not just minerals, but cars and car components, clothing and agricultural products.

Across Africa, Ernst & Young expects GDP to grow between 4 and 5 percent in 2012, compared to 2.7 percent for South Africa. In either case, the prediction is rosier than a growth rate of close to zero expected for Europe.

Europe is experiencing "a crisis of low growth and no jobs," said Mthuli Ncube, chief economist of the African Development Bank.

In an interview, Ncube credited fewer wars and more elections in Africa for the continent's resiliency amid a serious worldwide slowdown. He also pointed to painful economic reforms imposed on African governments in the 1980s and 1990s. Now, Ncube said, reform is being forced on European governments, such as the fiscal austerity plan for Greece mandated by the European Union, the European Central Bank and the International Monetary Fund. Greeks have regularly and sometimes violently protested austerity measures, and voters will get a chance to have their say in an election expected in the next few months.

Sita, of Ernst & Young, urged South Africa to work harder on developing markets in and attracting investment from Asia and other developing regions to counteract the impact of crisis in Europe. He also said South Africa needed to ensure it remained competitive, by investing in building its infrastructure and training its work force and by tackling corruption.

"We can't rest, because we are in a competitive world," the Johannesburg-based Sita said.

Earlier this week, South Africa's Industrial Development Corporation said South Africa's performance has global implications.

"It has now fallen on the emerging and other developing economies to sustain the world's growth momentum, since a contraction is forecast in the eurozone, while the USA and Japan are expected to record only modest growth," Jorge Maia, head of research for the corporation, said in a statement accompanying a report focusing on South Africa's key mining sector.

Maia, saying South Africa was lagging behind other countries in getting minerals out of the ground, called for "significantly higher levels of investment, supported by major improvements in the energy and transportation infrastructure."
