Debt ceiling is much scarier than fiscal cliff

1 day

Investors fearing a stock market plunge if the U.S. tumbles off the "fiscal cliff" next week may want to relax.

But they should be scared if a few weeks later Washington fails to reach a deal to raise the nation's debt ceiling as that threatens a default, another credit downgrade and a financial markets panic.

Market strategists say that falling off the cliff for any lengthy period -- which would lead to automatic tax hikes and stiff cuts in government spending?--?would badly dent both consumer and business confidence, but?it would take some time for the U.S. economy to slide into recession. In the meantime, there would be plenty of chances for lawmakers to make amends by reversing some of the effects.

That has been reflected in a U.S. stock market that has still not shown signs of melting down. Instead, it has drifted lower and gotten more volatile.

In some ways, that has let Washington off the hook. In the past, a plunge in stock prices forced the hand of Congress, such as in the middle of the financial crisis in 2008.

"If this thing continues for a bit longer and the result is you get a U.S. debt downgrade ... the risk is not that you lose two and half percent, the risk is that you lose ten and a half," said Jonathan Golub, chief U.S. equity strategist at UBS Equity Research in New York.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner said earlier?this??week that the United States will technically reach its debt limit at the end of the year.

'Tremendous fight'
The White House has said it will not negotiate the debt ceiling as in 2011, when the fight over what was once a procedural matter preceded the first-ever downgrade of the U.S. credit rating, but it may be forced into such a battle again. A repeat of that war is most worrisome for markets.

Markets posted several days of sharp losses in the period surrounding the debt ceiling fight in 2011. Even after a bill to increase the ceiling passed, stocks plunged in what was seen as a vote of no confidence in Washington's ability to function, given how close lawmakers came to a default.

Credit ratings agency Standard & Poor's lowered the U.S. sovereign rating to double-A-plus, citing Washington's legislative problems as one reason for the downgrade. The benchmark S&P 500 dropped 16 percent in a four-week period ending Aug. 21, 2011.

"I think there will be a tremendous fight between Democrats and Republicans about the debt ceiling," said Jon Najarian, a co-founder of online brokerage TradeMonster.com in Chicago.

"I think that is the biggest risk to the downside in January for the market and the U.S. economy."

There are some signs in the options market that investors are starting to eye the January period with more wariness. The CBOE Volatility Index, or the VIX, the market's favored anxiety indicator, has remained at relatively low levels throughout this process, though on Thursday it edged above 20 for the first time since July.

More notable is the action in VIX futures markets, which shows a sharper increase in expected volatility in January than in later-dated contracts. January VIX futures are up nearly 23 percent in the last seven trading days, compared with a 13 percent increase in March futures and an 8 percent increase in May futures. That's a sign of increasing near-term worry among market participants.

Consumers don't appear at all traumatized by the fiscal cliff talks, as yet. Helping to bolster consumer confidence has been a continued recovery in the housing market and growth in the labor market, albeit slow.

The latest employment take will be out Friday, and the Labor Department is expected to show jobs growth of 145,000 for December, in line with recent growth.

Consumers will see their paychecks affected if lawmakers cannot broker a deal and tax rates rise, but the effect on spending is likely to be gradual.

Negotiations ongoing
President Barack Obama met with?congressional leaders from both parties Friday?for discussions about the fiscal cliff, and the House of Representatives is set to convene Sunday and continue working through the New Year. Obama has proposed maintaining current tax rates for all but the highest earners.

Options strategists have noted an increase in positions to guard against weakness in defense stocks such as General Dynamics, as those stocks would be affected by spending cuts set for that sector. Notably, though, the PHLX Defense Index is less than 1 percent away from an all-time high reached Dec. 20.

This underscores the view taken by most investors and strategists: One way or another, Washington will come to an agreement to offset some effects of the cliff. The result will not be entirely satisfying, but it will be enough to satisfy investors.

"Expectations are pretty low at this point and yet the equity market hasn't reacted," said Carmine Grigoli, chief U.S. investment strategist at Mizuho Securities USA. "You're not going to see the markets react to anything with more than a 5 to 7 percent correction."

Markets, for the most part, have not shown the same kind of volatility as in 2008 or 2011.

A gradual decline remains possible, Golub said, if business and consumer confidence continues to take a hit on the back of fiscal cliff worries. The Conference Board's measure of consumer confidence fell sharply in December, a drop blamed in part on the fiscal issues.

"If Congress came out and said that everything is off the table, yeah, that would be a short-term shock to the market, but that's not likely," said Richard Weiss, a Mountain View, Calif.-based senior money manager at American Century Investments.

"Things will be resolved, just maybe not on a good time table. All else being equal, we see any further decline as a buying opportunity."?

Temporarily Bring a Broken Blender Back to Life with an Electric Drill

Temporarily Bring a Broken Blender Back to Life with an Electric DrillIf your blender dies during a party you can get back to making margaritas in five minutes by opening up the blender, cutting off the drive mechanism from the blender drive shaft, and inserting the drive shaft into your drill's chuck.

Reddit user mrpalmer16 was able to continue the party using this emergency repair. It's definitely not how you'd want to use your blender every day, but works great until you get a chance to replace it.

Scientologists may be facing their most daunting court case yet, and all it took was for someone to stop calling them a cult. After a years long legal battle, federal prosecutors in?Belgium now believe their investigation is complete enough to charge the Church of Scientology and its leaders as a criminal organization on charges of extortion, fraud, privacy breaches, and the illegal practice of medicine. "The decision follows years of investigation that was triggered by a complaint by the Labour Mediation Service in the Brussels Region. ...

Obama wants gun violence measures passed in 2013

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Recalling the shooting rampage that killed 20 first graders as the worst day of his presidency, President Barack Obama pledged to put his "full weight" behind legislation aimed at preventing gun violence.

Obama voiced skepticism about the National Rifle Association's proposal to put armed guards in schools following the Dec. 14 tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn. The president made his comments Saturday in an interview that aired Sunday on NBC's "Meet the Press."

Instead, the president vowed to rally the American people around an agenda to limit gun violence, adding that he still supports increased background checks and bans on assault weapons and high-capacity bullet magazines. He left no doubt it will be one of his top priorities next year.

"It is not enough for us to say, 'This is too hard so we're not going to try,'" Obama said.

"I think there are a vast majority of responsible gun owners out there who recognize that we can't have a situation in which somebody with severe psychological problems is able to get the kind of high capacity weapons that this individual in Newtown obtained and gun down our kids," he added. "And, yes, it's going to be hard."

The president added that he's ready to meet with Republicans and Democrats, anyone with a stake in the issue.

The schoolhouse shootings, coming as families prepared for the holidays, have elevated the issue of gun violence to the forefront of public attention. Six adult staff members were also killed at the elementary school. Shooter Adam Lanza committed suicide, apparently as police closed in. Earlier, he had killed his mother at the home they shared.

The tragedy immediately prompted calls for greater gun controls. But the NRA is strongly resisting those efforts, arguing instead that schools should have armed guards for protection. Some gun enthusiasts have rushed to buy semiautomatic rifles of the type used by Lanza, fearing sales may soon be restricted.

Obama seemed unimpressed by the NRA proposal. "I am skeptical that the only answer is putting more guns in schools," he said. "And I think the vast majority of the American people are skeptical that that somehow is going to solve our problem."

The president said he intends to press the issue with the public.

"The question then becomes whether we are actually shook up enough by what happened here that it does not just become another one of these routine episodes where it gets a lot of attention for a couple of weeks and then it drifts away," Obama said. "It certainly won't feel like that to me. This is something that - you know, that was the worst day of my presidency. And it's not something that I want to see repeated."

Separately, a member of the president's cabinet said Sunday that rural America may be ready to join a national conversation about gun control. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack said the debate has to start with respect for the Second Amendment right to bear arms and recognition that hunting is a way of life for millions of Americans.

But Vilsack said Newtown has changed the way people see the issue. "I really believe that this is a different circumstance and a different situation," Vilsack said on CNN.

Vilsack said he thinks it's possible for Americans to come together. "It's potentially a unifying conversation," he said. "The problem is that these conversations are always couched in the terms of dividing us. This could be a unifying conversation, and Lord knows we need to be unified."

Besides passing gun violence legislation, Obama also listed deficit reduction and immigration as top priorities for 2013. A big deficit reduction deal with Republicans proved elusive this month, and Obama is now hoping Senate Democratic and Republican leaders salvage a scaled-back plan that avoids tax increases for virtually all Americans.

In addition, he issued a defense of former Republican Sen. Chuck Hagel of Nebraska, who has been mentioned as one of the leading candidates to replace Leon Panetta as defense secretary.

Hagel supported the 2002 resolution approving U.S. military action in Iraq, but later became a critic of the war. He has been denounced by some conservatives for not being a strong enough ally of Israel. Also, many liberals and gay activists have banded against him for comments he made in 1998 about an openly gay nominee for an ambassadorship.

Obama, who briefly served with Hagel in the Senate, stressed that he had yet to make a decision but called Hagel a "patriot."

Hagel "served this country with valor in Vietnam," the president said. "And (he) is somebody who's currently serving on my intelligence advisory board and doing an outstanding job."

Obama noted that Hagel had apologized for his 14-year-old remark on gays.

NBA standings 2012: Cavaliers sitting in last place in the Central Division

Despite winning two of their last three games, the Cleveland Cavaliers remain in last place in the NBA's Central Division standings. Indiana currently leads the division with a 17-12 record.

Even with two wins in their last three games, the Cleveland Cavaliers still find themselves in last place in the NBA's Central Division standings. The Cavaliers' 102-94 loss to Atlanta on Friday night dropped them to 7-24 overall on the season.

And with the loss, it also put them a game further behind division-leading Indiana, which beat Phoenix at home on Friday night. The Pacers are 17-12 overall and in first place in the Central, while Milwaukee and Chicago are each a game back, with both sporting 15-12 records. Detroit is in fourth place after their stunning 109-99 victory over the Heat on Friday evening, with the Cavaliers 3.5 games behind the Pistons and 11 games off the top spot in the Central Division.

As things stand, the Cavaliers currently have the third worst overall record in the NBA.

Only the Washington Wizards (4-23) and New Orleans (6-23) are off to worse starts than Cleveland is.

(AP) ? The New Orleans Saints and suspended coach Sean Payton will indeed be together again next season as the bounty scandal fades into history and the bid to win a second Super Bowl resumes.

Payton has agreed in principle to a multiyear contract extension, the team said.

"Very happy it is official," quarterback Drew Brees said in an email to the AP. "Never had any doubts."

Payton was due to begin his seventh season as the Saints' head coach in 2012 before being suspended for the whole season by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell in connection with the NFL's bounty investigation.

"I am pleased that Sean Payton will be our head coach for a long time," owner Tom Benson said in a statement. "Now we can focus our attention on building on the winning tradition with the Saints that Sean has played such a large role in."

Payton signed an extension in 2011 worth more than $6 million a year that would have kept him in New Orleans through 2015, but Goodell objected to certain language in that deal, leaving Payton's future uncertain until the deal was reached Friday. The language in question in the previous extension gave Payton the right to opt out early if general manager Mickey Loomis left the club for any reason.

The new agreement also must be approved by the NFL. The team did not disclose the length of the extension or financial terms.

Payton is the only coach in Saints history to win a Super Bowl, a title earned at the end of the 2009 season. But his legacy was tarnished by the NFL's bounty probe, as Goodell ruled that Payton failed to exert proper institutional control over a cash-for-hits bounty program run by former defensive coordinator Gregg Williams from 2009-2011.

Although the Saints objected to the characterization of what coaches and players have said was nothing more than a performance pool for big plays, Goodell suspended Payton for the entire season. The commissioner also suspended Loomis for half of the season and assistant head coach Joe Vitt for six games.

Payton is 62-34 in regular-season games as Saints coach and 5-3 in the postseason. During the three seasons before his suspension, the Saints won 41 regular-season and playoff games combined, more than any other team in the NFL.

Payton has primarily handled the offense in New Orleans, teaming up with Brees to break numerous NFL and club records. The single-season NFL records set by the Saints in 2011 included yards passing by a team (5,505) and a quarterback (5,476). The Saints also set a record for total offensive yards with 7,474.

Although speculation ran rampant that Payton could essentially become a free agent after this season and end up elsewhere, Brees repeatedly said he would be "shocked" if Payton ended up anywhere but New Orleans next season. Brees is under contract with the Saints through the 2016 season, and Payton was the driving force in the Saints' effort to acquire Brees as a free agent in 2006.

Without Payton on the sideline this season, the Saints missed the playoffs for the first time since 2008. Brees remained prolific, but his 18 interceptions also tied for a league high heading into the final weekend of the season.

The Saints headed into Sunday's season finale against Carolina at 7-8, hoping to avoid their first losing season since they went 7-9 in 2007.

Payton is expected to return to the Saints immediately after the Super Bowl on Feb. 3, unless Goodell allows him to return earlier.

When Payton reports back to work, it will officially close the book on the bounty saga that has overshadowed the Saints' organization since the NFL first announced on March 2 that it found the Saints ran a program that paid improper cash bonuses for hits that injured opponents.

In addition to the suspensions of Payton, Loomis and Vitt, the Saints also were docked second-round draft choices in 2012 and 2013, though Goodell has said he could potentially restores the Saints' 2013 second-round choice and dock the team a later-round pick.

Meanwhile, four current or former Saints were initially given suspensions of varying lengths. Two current Saints defensive captains, linebacker Jon Vilma and defensive end Will Smith, were among those suspended. Vilma was banned for the whole season and Smith for four games, but the players successfully challenged their punishment with the help of the NFL Players Association and never served a game.

Former Commissioner Paul Tagliabue, who was appointed by Goodell to oversee the players' appeals, ruled that the NFL probe was accurate in its findings that the Saints ran an improper program and attempted to cover it up, but that the evidence was not strong enough to warrant unprecedented suspensions for players who had been only fined for similar behavior in the past.

Vultures pick at visitors' cars in Fla. Everglades

HOMESTEAD, Fla. (AP) ? Visitors to parts of Everglades National Park are getting tarps and bungee cords to make their vehicles less delectable to vultures.

Migrating vultures have developed a habit of ripping off windshield wipers, sunroof seals, and other rubber and vinyl vehicle parts. Visitors to the park's Homestead and Flamingo entrances are loaned "anti-vulture kits" to protect their vehicles.

Park wildlife biologist Skip Snow tells The Miami Herald (http://hrld.us/WQkfgB) that the vultures are migrating as normal. It's just not clear why the birds are picking at parked cars and trucks. Park employees have tried to scare away the vultures, but nothing has worked.

Park Superintendent Dan Kimball says complaints about the vultures have declined since employees began distributing the tarps and bungee cords last year.

Classic Trucks Drawing Attention at Auctions - PickupTrucks.com ...

Posted by Larry Edsall | December 28, 2012

    1928-Ford-Model-A-AR-Type-76A-560

They don't draw the big numbers you hear when a Duesenberg or Ferrari crosses the block, but classic pickup trucks are becoming increasingly popular with bidders at classic car auctions.

Part of the reason is their affordability. Another is that, just like brand new trucks, they can carry a load, perhaps salvaged parts needed for the restoration of another vehicle in a collection. Yet another is that classic pickups are, well, just too cool not to be part of any serious collection.

"It costs a lot less to restore a pickup truck," notes Dave Kinney, a long-time vehicle appraiser and publisher of the Hagerty Price Guide, which tracks classic car (and truck) prices.

"Look at a 1956 Chevy Bel Air and a 1956 Chevy pickup truck," Kinney says. "The truck has a tenth of the chrome, only two doors and one seat, and a rubber mat on the floor."

Kinney also notes "what appraisers call 'value in use' that comes with a classic pickup. "You can take the trash to the dump in a classic pickup and you'd never do that in your '56 Chevy [car]."

Kinney offers yet another reason why pickups have become popular with collectors: Drive your classic Bentley to the hardware store and people will think you're putting on airs. But, Kinney says, "No one hates you when you drive an old pickup truck. You're not showing off, saying 'look at me, I have lots of money.'

"Nobody doesn't like an old pickup truck," he adds. "They make you smile."

Though their recent popularity and the degree of some restorations has caused prices to increase, Kinney says very well-restored classic pickups typically are sold for between $25,000 and $45,000, and six-figure bids are extremely rare.

The classic car auction seasons starts each January, primarily in the Phoenix area, but also with some 3,000 vehicles offered at the Mecum Auctions event in Kissimmee, Fla.

We've been scouring the catalogs for the upcoming auctions to come up with some examples of what will be available should you care to place a bid in Arizona at the Barrett-Jackson, Russo and Steele, Bonhams, Gooding, RM or Silver auctions or at Mecum's event in Florida.

1928 Ford Model A "AR" Type 76A (pictured above)
The R stands for Replaced, and means this was an early production truck produced with parts replaced later in the model year. For example, early 1928 Ford cars had red steering wheels and a hand brake lever on the driver's left. But the braking system was redesigned in March 1928 and the hand brake was moved as part of that process.

This particular "AR" is an open-cab pickup from the famed Oldenburg Family Collection and combines the sportiness of a roadster with the utility of a pickup truck. The engine is a 40-horsepower, 200-cubic-inch L-head inline four, linked to a three-speed manual gearbox. The color is Balsam Green over black fenders. Bonhams expects the truck to sell for as much as $30,000.

    31modelA560

    1931 Ford Model A pickup
Vehicles sold at classic car auctions can be offered with or without reserve. A reserve is a minimum ? and secret ? plateau the bidding must reach before the vehicle's owner agrees to allow its sale. Obviously, if you're the owner of a $100,000 vehicle, you want some assurance it won't be hammered off at, say, $62,500.

Among the vehicles being sold without reserve in Arizona is this 1931 Ford Model A pickup from the J.D. Parker Antique Auto Collection. Parker collected cars for more than 50 years, but he died in 2011 and many of the vehicles he collected are being made available.

Among them is this '31 Model A, which was restored seven years ago but almost immediately parked back in Parker's warehouse; the car has been driven only 64 miles since its restoration, Russo and Steele catalog reports. The restoration included rebuilding of the engine, brakes, tires, fuel system, exhaust, cooling system, wiring, interior, new wood in the bed (and elsewhere), new glass and window regulations, new vinyl top and re-chromed bumpers.

    37terraplane560

    1937 Hudson Terraplane
Another pickup being sold without reserve is this 1937 Hudson Terraplane, which Russo and Steele's catalog reports may be one of fewer than 10 that survive from that model year.

Essex was a division of the Hudson car company. In 1932, Essex launched a new model, the Terraplane, available as a car or a pickup truck. The Terraplane was known for its powerful engine ? it became a favorite with bootleggers. The pickup version featured a car-like interior, very luxurious for the time.

Hudson dropped the Essex name in 1933 but continued to produce Terraplanes through the 1938 model year.

The Terraplane pickup being offered at Russo and Steele underwent a frame-off restoration in 2011 and features two rare factory options ? a rear bumper and bumperettes. It also has a heater, tool boxes and side-mounted spare tire.

    37dodge560

    1937 Dodge
For the 1937 model year, Dodge updated the design of its half-ton pickup and also upgraded the dashboard with safety in mind: flush-mounted controls and knobs reduced potential injuries in a crash. Also updated was the 218-cubic-inch L-head six-cylinder engine, which now provided 75 horsepower through a "synchro silent" three-speed manual transmission and new four-point suspension.

This example will be offered at the Silver auction, and the auction houses notes its rarity because post-Depression production numbers were low to begin with and so many "were beat up on farms and dirt roads." Pre-auction estimate for this truck is $29,000 to $49,000.

    54chevy560

1954 Chevrolet Custom Deluxe 5-window short bed
While it may look stock, this '54 Chevy pickup has been customized with a 350-cubic-inch small block V8 topped by an Edelbrock manifold and 600-cfm carburetor. Designed for daily driving, this truck also has an eight-inch Ford rear end, Mustang II front suspension with rack and pinion power steering, power brakes and other updates, including a stainless steel gas tank. It will cross the block at the Silver Auction in Arizona.

    Dodgescooter560

    1957 Dodge Sweptline
Sometimes pickups come with a bonus. For example, this 1957 Dodge Sweptline to be sold at Mecum's event in Florida has a 1959 Eagle Cushman motor scooter in its bed. One bid, two vehicles! Why? The owner of the truck's father was a Cushman dealer in the 1950s.

Speaking of the truck, it's a frame-off restoration in Pacific Blue and White with a 314.6-cid V8 with push-button automatic transmission.

Sweptline, of course, was Dodge's answer to the Chevrolet Cameo Carrier and was created by grafting the rear fenders from Dodge's two-door station wagon to the sides of the pickup box.

    1959-Chevrolet-3100-Apache-Fleetside560

1959 Chevrolet 3100 Apache Fleetside Deluxe
Crossing the block at Bonhams sale is this 4x4 pickup, which is among those featured on the 2013 Hemmings Vintage Pickups calendar.

This Apache is, indeed, a classic, because it rides on a NAPCO 4x4 system. In 1942, the Northwestern Auto Parts Co. of Minneapolis began offering its "Powr-Pak" 4x4 conversion. The NAPCO system proved its capability on U.S. military trucks in World War II and by 1956 GM offered the NAPCO setup as a regular production option (RPO). But 1959 was the last year for that arrangement; in 1960 GM started engineering its own 4x4 option.

Bonhams reports this '59 Chevy 3100 Fleetside Deluxe NAPCO truck has been restored to a level normally only seen on high-end passenger cars. It features Bombay Ivory and Frontier Beige paint and chromed bumpers, grill and hubcaps. It also has factory-optional two-speed windshield wipers and heavy-duty radiator.

The interior shows the correct woven pattern cloth, AM radio, heater/defroster with all-wheel-drive operating instructions on the dashboard.

The truck won "Best Non-Passenger" vehicle honors at the 2011 Desert Classic Concours and is expected to sell for as much as $85,000 at the auction.

    ElCamino560

    1970 Chevrolet El Camino SS
Not all the auction action is in Arizona. Mecum Auctions will parade some 3,000 classics across the block in Florida, including this 1970 El Camino SS, which is expected to fetch north of 100 grand.

Why? Because since the '70 El Camino was a Chevelle from the bench seat forward, it could be ordered with Chevy's big-block V8. Thus the 454-cubic-inch, 450-horsepower LS6 engine in this pickup, which was restored to factory specification by Jen-Jac Restorations of Savannah, Georgia.

In addition to the big engine, the truck has a close-ratio Muncie M22 "Rock Crusher" four-speed gearbox and 4.10 Positraction rear end. It also has power steering and brakes, a cowl induction hood (with hood pins), five-spoke Super Sport wheels and Firestone Wide Oval tires.

The color is Tuxedo Black with a white SS stripe and black bench-seat interior.

    Toyotaauction560

2011 Toyota Tundra Clint Bowyer custom
A pickup doesn't have to be old to be classic and collectible. Consider this 2011 Toyota Tundra customized by NASCAR Spring Cup driver Clint Bowyer, who, according to the Barrett-Jackson auction catalog, was inspired by the weathered trucks he saw as a youngster growing up in Kansas.

Bowyer even had the Red House Custom Paints in Kansas create the truck's special weathered look by countless sessions of applying Sherwin-Williams Planet Color paint and then sanding for the right visual effect. Even the door jams and truck bed get the same attention to visual detail.

Period-correct body modifications and accessories include a custom vertical-bar grille atop white bumpers, wooden bed stakes, a wood bed floor and a decorative gas tank, Barrett-Jackson notes. There's also a custom louvered tailgate.

The truck rides on 20-inch Smoothies wheels with custom chrome center caps. The seats have Mexican blanket-style inserts.

    1925_White_Yellowstone_Tour_Bus560

1925 White Model 15-45 Yellowstone Park touring bus
O.K., technically it's not a pickup truck, but Gooding & Company's docket includes a 1925 White Model 15-45 Yellowstone Park Touring Bus that's just too cool not to include in this roundup.

The vehicle is an icon of a bygone era when the national park offered tours in a fleet of 90-such open-air buses with four rows of seats. This example, which spent 14 years shuttling visitors to Yellowstone, has been owned by the same owner since 1965 and was restored by the same people who had maintained it when it was in the Yellowstone fleet.

Expect to spend between $110,000 and $130,000, Gooding says, adding that since its restoration the bus has made several trips to national parks and to elevations to 11,500 feet.

Over the past year copyright holders have asked Google to remove 51,395,353 links to infringing webpages, a dramatic surge compared to previous years. The search giant is currently processing half a million ?infringing? links per day, and this number is increasing week after week. At the same time, Hollywood and the major record labels want Google to increase its anti-piracy efforts.

googleIn common with many other websites on the Internet Google has an obligation to remove infringing content upon receiving a valid DMCA request from copyright holders.

To give the public insight into the scope and nature of this process, Google started to publish all takedown requests online in their Transparency Report.

Since then, the number of URLs Google is being asked to remove has grown rapidly. Last week Google received takedown requests for a record-breaking 3,502,345 URLs, which is 15 times more than the amount received in January.

Google doesn?t report yearly figures, but we added up all the weekly reports and found that in 2012 Google was asked to remove 51,395,353 links to infringing webpages. Nearly all of these webpages are no longer showing up in Google?s search results.

The data further reveals the RIAA is the most active sender. The music group asked Google to remove links to 7,816,766 allegedly infringing webpages this year.

Looking at the websites that Google received the most takedown notices for, we see that the file-hosting search engine FilesTube tops the rankings with 2,273,280 links. While this is certainly a significant number, it?s less than one percent of all FilesTube pages indexed by Google.

Google was further asked to remove 554,613 links to The Pirate Bay, which puts the most notorious BitTorrent site in 16th place.

While copyright holders are entitled to protect their content, the avalanche of takedown requests also has a downside. Not all of the requests are correct and this quite regularly leads to the takedown of legitimate content.

Google itself also raised concerns about this worrying trend.

?As policymakers evaluate how effective copyright laws are, they need to consider the collateral impact copyright regulation has on the flow of information online,? Google?s Legal Director Fred Von Lohmann said earlier this month.

For their part, the MPAA uses the data to point out how much pirated content they have to deal with online. The Hollywood group sees Google as one of the main facilitators of copyright infringement.

?There is a staggering amount of copyright infringement taking place every day online and much of it is facilitated by Google, as their own data shows,? the MPAA noted a few weeks ago.

?We couldn?t agree more with Google that this data shows that our current system is not working ? for creators, or for Google. But we can?t lose sight of the fact that it also confirms the important role that Google has to play in helping curb the theft of creative works while protecting an Internet that works for everyone,? the Hollywood group added.

MPAA?s comments are shared by other copyright holders, who all want Google to step up its anti-piracy efforts.

Last year a behind-closed-doors meeting revealed that the copyright industry is pushing Google to completely de-list popular file-sharing sites such as The Pirate Bay, and give higher ranking to authorized sites.

Thus far Google has not de-listed any websites, but in August the search engine did start downgrading ?pirate? sites for which they receive a relatively many DMCA takedown notices. Whether this has a significant effect on the availability of pirated content is unknown.

It will be interesting to see how much the number of DMCA notices increases in the coming year, and if Google announces more anti-piracy changes.

Three New Jersey police officers shot; gunman reported dead

(Reuters) - Three New Jersey police officers were shot early on Friday at their police station, and one was in surgery for his wounds, a hospital official said.

The suspected gunman, who had been brought to the Gloucester Township Police station for a domestic incident, was killed in the exchange of gunfire, local TV reported, citing police officials. Gloucester is in central New Jersey about 16 miles outside of Philadelphia.

"A violent struggle occurred while the suspect was being processed," Gloucester Deputy Police Chief David Harkins said, according to Philadelphia TV station NBC10. The man was able to grab a gun and then opened fire.

The gunman was killed by police during the confrontation, Gloucester Police Chief W. Harry Earle said, according to the NBC10 report.

Gloucester Township Police declined to comment on the incident or to confirm the NBC10 report. An officer answering the phone said a press statement would be issued later in the day and a press conference was scheduled for Friday afternoon.

The three wounded police officers, two men and a woman, were brought to Cooper University Hospital shortly after 6 a.m. EST (1100 GMT), hospital spokeswoman Lori Shaffer said.

Two of the officers suffered minor wounds, but one of the three, a male, required surgery, Shaffer said. She had no more information on the extent of the officer's wounds.

The incident follows several recent multiple shootings in the United States, and comes two weeks after a gunman killed 26 people, including 20 children, at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut.

One week ago in western Pennsylvania, a man with a pistol fatally shot three people and then opened fire on police. Three officers were injured in that incident, one in a collision from a car chase with the gunman, another from bullet fragments to the face and a third who was struck with gunfire to the chest but survived because he was wearing a bulletproof vest.

Looking For A Pet Gate? You'll Have Many Options ? Life with ...

If you?ll remember, I asked for a pet gate this Christmas.

Carlson Extra-tall Walk Through Pet Gate

Well, I?m happy to report that ?Santa? came through, and I?m eagerly awaiting our move so we can put it up and try it out.

As you may have read before, it took a while for us to pick out a pet gate, since it needed to accommodate a number of specific requirements. So time will tell if this gate can really pass the test. (Don?t worry, I?ll keep you all posted!)

That said, there are dozens of pet gates available for purchase, and they all offer different features. I wanted to share some of those specifics with you, in case you too are looking for the perfect pet gate.

    Material

Material can play a major role in durability, cost and more. Most gates that I?ve found come in one of three materials:

    • Wood (these come in a variety of finishes)
    • Metal (these come in a variety of finishes, too)
    • Plastic

While no one material is superior over another, they do each have their own pros and cons. For example, as nice as wood may look, a young puppy may chew on it or your cat may scratch on it. Similarly, a nice wooden gate may look more attractive in your home than a plastic one, and so on.

    Mounting

Detail of the pet gate above

This is probably one of the most important variables you?ll want to consider. How a gate mounts can impact where it?s located, how easily you can move it, how secure it will be and more.

    • Wall-mount: Many heavier/more intense gates are wall-mounted. This means that some part of the gate will be screwed into your wall, which will make it more secure. Gates that are wall-mounted will likely be in that location for a while, as you can?t move them easily.
    • Pressure-mount: Pressure-mount gates are the ones that do not screw into the wall; instead you manually adjust the tension to hold it in place. If not done properly, these can be knocked out of place. Some pressure-mount gates also come with a wall-mounting option.

*If you?re considering placing a pet gate in a doorway that has a baseboard, look for a gate that features an independent tension system. This means you can adjust the top tension to one width, and the bottom tension to another width.

    • Free-standing: These gates can go just about anywhere, since they stand on their own. Some may have their own feet to hold them up, others may be modular, consisting of several sections, so you can shape them as needed.

    Height

    Richell Freestanding Pet Barrier

Thankfully, gates come in a variety of heights to meet all of our needs: from the low gates that are perfect for small, non-jumping pets to extra-tall gates.

Most that are tall enough feature walk-through doors for humans. Extra-tall gates are ideal for larger pets/children and pets that are capable of jumping over lower gates. (http://bit.ly/Uh8ssc)

    Width

Keep in mind that some pet gates only extend to a specific width. To accommodate larger door openings, some come with extensions you can add on the ends. Others require you to purchase these separately.

Some gates come in extra-wide widths for larger openings.

    Barrier Design

    • Diamond/square/hexagon: These patterns are popular on less-expensive pressure-mounted gates. However, as I found out with CG, they may also be easily climbed by a smaller, agile pet.
    • Bars: Bars can be a great solution for pets who have a tendency of climbing pet gates. That said, make sure you check the distance between each bar. Some of us have small pets who may be able to squeeze through them.
    • Screen/fabric: Instead of featuring metal bars or crisscrossing wood, these gates feature a piece of material that blocks off one room from another. (http://bit.ly/Uhat7E)

    Walk-through Door

These are ideal especially if your gate is too high for you to step over easily. This is its own topic since these doors can vary greatly from gate to gate. Read a product?s details to learn the specific features of your walk-through gate. In the meantime, here are a few things to keep in mind:

    • Carlson Extra-tall Walk Through Pet Gate

How the gate opens: Some require you to lift the door, others require you to press a button with your hand or foot. Carefully consider this to figure out what would be easiest for you, and which your pet can?t manipulate.

    • Which way the door swings: This is especially important if your gate is located at the top of stairs. Some doors are made specifically for this, so it won?t open toward the stairs. This prevents anyone from accidentally falling through the door and down the stairs.
    • If the door locks: Some doors feature other locking mechanisms that make it additionally difficult for anyone or anything to get through unintentionally.

While you?re thinking of all of those things, also consider how often you?ll walk through the gate, if you?ll be holding anything (may impact how many hands you?ll have free to open the gate), etc. Some gates even feature an automatic close.

    Extra Features?

    • Pet door: Perfect if you?re trying to keep a larger pet or child in one room, but want to give free rein to a cat or smaller pet. (http://bit.ly/Uh8ssc) Check the dimensions of the pet door to make sure it?s the right size for your smaller pets.

Have you purchased a pet gate? Which features were most important to you? Please share in the comments!

Colombian president has urinary infection, at no risk

BOGOTA (Reuters) - Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos, who underwent cancer surgery in October, is suffering from a urinary infection but there is no risk to his overall health, his office said on Friday.

Santos, who is at his official retreat in the coastal city of Cartagena, is able to continue with his daily agenda after a regular checkup, his doctor, Felipe Gomez, said in a statement sent by the president's office.

"I was in a post operative checkup and now I am back to my normal routine," Santos, 61, said in a Twitter message.

The conservative president told Colombians in October he was suffering from non-aggressive prostate cancer and needed surgery. The disease had been caught in time and there was minimal risk, he said back then.

The Harvard-educated economist is in peace talks with the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, the Marxist-inspired insurgency that has killed tens of thousands over 50 years.

A peace deal would help secure Santos a place in history and allow him to build on the economic and security advances that began under former President Alvaro Uribe a decade ago.

Success would also determine whether he would seek a second term in 2014.

Colombia, a country of about 46 million people, has attracted record foreign direct investment over the last few years as a U.S.-backed military offensive against drug traffickers and FARC rebels improved business confidence.

Education shakeup PR job from hell - Stuff

The merger of Christchurch schools and the launch of an earthquake recovery plan were among the toughest public relations jobs in 2012.

BlacklandPR has named the bungled announcement of the schools shakeup in September the hardest job of the year, and the release of the Christchurch Central Development Unit's (CCDU) central-city blueprint the third toughest.

Company director Mark Blackham said factors in the school announcement would "challenge the world's best PR exponents".

"Christchurch schools have to be reorganised, thousands of people will be affected and all of them fear change that affects their children's educational futures," he said.

The schools merger announcement led to a backlash in Christchurch, with public protests and Government promises of further consultation. Blackham said the CCDU plan was released after a "long period of dispute and frustration", but the public had "reserved judgment" on it.

Christchurch PR experts said consultation and empathy were the key to successful communication.

Erin Jamieson, of Convergence PR, said genuine consultation was important in post-earthquake Christchurch.

"It has been a challenging year but it has also been a very interesting year. Communications people have worked on projects that they never dreamed they would be taking on," she said.

"The whole challenge is ensuring organisations really are consulting. There are a lot of organisations that really need to consult properly and not just inform.

"Given what everyone has been through, there is an expectation that the community do have a right to have a say. Organisations really need to respect that rather than just pay lip service."

PR consultant Ali Jones said Christchurch issues needed to be handled with "humanity and empathy".

"You need to be based here to understand the issues. You are living it then," she said.

"You are hearing the news every day on the radio and reading the paper and talking to mums on the school run. Unless you are living here, you can't understand what is happening and what people require.

"The whole thing about good communication is the humanity and empathy, and if that is not there you run the risk of getting things wrong, as we have seen."

    OTHER TOUGH PR JOBS:

    - the release of the Pike River mining disaster report

    - the plan for an increase in school class sizes

    - the Kim Dotcom spying debacle

    - Marmite production problems
