Santorum: The GOP's past or future? (Politico)

IOWA CITY ? In Iowa this week, Rick Santorum looks for the first time like he?s in the right place at the right moment in the presidential campaign.

But to listen to the candidate speak, you might think that place is the floor of the United States Senate, and the moment is 1998.

Santorum goes after Ron Paul

There is growing evidence, both from polls and anecdotally, that while Santorum may not have fully caught fire in Iowa, the once-cold embers of his campaign are hot and starting to glow. With Rick Perry and Michele Bachmann drifting toward irrelevance, Newt Gingrich?s poll numbers plummeting and Herman Cain off the stage entirely, the state?s conservative and evangelical faithful may be giving Santorum a long and serious look. Santorum, after all, has campaigned the Iowa way ? traveling the state relentlessly, taking questions for hours, hunting caucus support voter by voter.

Yet even as Santorum enjoys the moment of national attention he?s labored for months to earn, the former Pennsylvania senator hasn?t put to rest the central challenge of his campaign: showing voters that he?s the best fit for the moment that is 2012, rather than a political holdover who?s been out of office for half a decade and whose political touchstones are ancient history to many voters.

For Iowans inclined to view Santorum with skepticism, the Republican keeps offering up reminders that the high point of his political career, in many respects, was several presidencies ago.

In Muscatine Thursday, Santorum recalled going ?toe to toe with Daniel Patrick Moynihan and Ted Kennedy? on welfare reform, touting the issue expertise he gained on the House Ways and Means Committee. In Coralville, Santorum reminded voters that it had been he, back in the day, who wrote a book to rebut Hillary Clinton?s claim that ?it takes a village to raise a family, to raise our children.?

At a film screening in Des Moines earlier this month, Santorum launched into an anecdote that he introduced as ?a story about when I was debating the partial birth abortion bill in 1998? ? an episode he?s related numerous times, about sparring with California Sen. Barbara Boxer. In the second-to-last pre-caucus debate, Santorum boasted of having ?exposed the House banking scandal? in the early 1990s.

And Santorum often brags of having taken on the Democratic consulting team of Paul Begala and James Carville in his first Senate race ? 17 years ago.

?The symmetry in my political career in what we?re doing here is pretty amazing,? he mused at his Coralville stop this week. ?I ran against the author of Clintoncare in 1994.?

Santorum isn?t the only presidential candidate whose political career is firmly anchored in the 1990s: Mitt Romney made his first bid for office in 1994 and Gingrich?s reign as speaker spanned the middle of the decade.

Chinese Stocks Under Attack By Short-Sellers And Management Alike

Small-cap Chinese companies continue to leave a sour taste in the mouth of investors as uncertainty remains rampant over the validity of their financials and auditing practices. As the reverse merger scandal placed into question the sector as a whole, money has flowed out of these small-cap companies at a rapid pace. Not only has this hurt equity holders, but has deterred others from venturing further. It's also made it possible for a few otherwise unlikely scenarios to occur.

Perhaps one of the more interesting situations was the controversy over Harbin Electric (HRBN) which waged a war of trust between the company and short-seller firm Citron Research. In the most unlikely of scenarios, Citron had come out with a research piece asserting fraud at Harbin that proceeded to cut the share price in half within a day. Soon after, the company announced a buyout of the company?s stock that sent the market soaring the opposite direction but coming nowhere near the buyout price. Over the next few months, even with much affirmation by the company, the share price only ever so slowly gained confidence in the buyout?s reality despite continued protest from Citron. Eventually, the buyout occurred and the company was taken private.

In another ongoing instance, we see the case of China Advanced Construction Materials Group, Inc (CADC). Also hit hard under the sentiment over Chinese reverse mergers, this company with a book value double the current share price, has managed to entertain and pass a buyout offer from the CEO to acquire the company for $2.65/share. With a book value of $4.89/sh according to Yahoo Finance, many would decry this as being far from fair. Yet even after its announcement, the reaction by the investor public was but mildly responsive. Shares at one point managed to trade back down to $1.50 despite the ongoing buyout procedures. One could easily blame the board of directors' poor handling of the offer for allowing this to occur. However, in another sense, with the amount of time given for the market to react, the market's poor reception to the idea can be seen as proof enough that the buyout was the best offer available.

For many shareholders in such Chinese companies, these situations are proving to be disappointing at best. Many had bought shares at much higher prices before these companies had fallen out of favor. Practices that wouldn?t normally be tolerated had the sentiment been different are leaving these small-cap investors vulnerable from two sides: Bears (as was the case with HRBN) and Management (as is the opportunistic case for CADC).

Many of these companies continue to remain severely undervalued from the sense of book value. As most Chinese reverse mergers had listed onto the US market to raise capital (witnessed by the number that committed at least one shelf offering), there is the ongoing threat of why a wealthy CEO wouldn?t pursue a buyout at such low prices that investors are willing to place on the companies.

Here?s a quick look at a few reverse merger companies in terms of market capitalization (12/26/11), net tangible assets (most recent quarter), and insider ownership (according to Yahoo Finance):

Company Market Cap NTA Insider%
China Automotive Systems (CAAS) $100.5 M $163.4 M 73.94%
Fushi Copperweld (FSIN) $293.8 M $369.6 M 44.98%
Feihe International (ADY) $55.5 M $183.9 M 51.15%
Yuhe International (YUII) $15.2 M $113.2 M 39.32%
Yongye International (YONG) $196.6 M $277.0 M 22.18%
Zhongpin (HOGS) $323.3 M $407.6 M 37.07%
Skystar Bio Pharmaceutical (SKBI) $20.1 M $79.4 M 19.90%
SmartHeat (HEAT) $13.0 M $118.4 M 37.29%
China Natural Gas (CHNG) $41.4 M $189.8 M 28.99%
China Marine Food Group (CMFO) $38.3 M $104.6 M 60.12%
China Sky One Medical (CSKI) $20.1 M $106.1 M 37.12%

Additional note: In perhaps an astonishing vote of confidence in the board?s ability to keep management under check, Fushi Copperweld (FSIN) successfully rejected a buyout offer by the CEO on December 5, 2011. Perhaps there?s hope yet for shareholders who have already so little trust in the companies they hold.

Disclosure: I am long CMFO.

A-Rod fine after treatment on knee, shoulder (AP)

NEW YORK ? The New York Yankees say star third baseman Alex Rodriguez is totally fine after having special treatment on his right knee and left shoulder in Germany earlier this month.

The 36-year-old Rodriguez had plasma-rich platelet injections following a recommendation from Los Angeles Lakers star Kobe Bryant. Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said Wednesday that the team gave its permission after vetting the process.

Rodriguez's treatment was first reported by the New York Post.

Cashman says the therapy is in "complete compliance" with WADA and Major League Baseball regulations. He also said the treatment is performed in the United States. The Yankees say Rodriguez went to the doctor in Germany because he's at the top of this field.

Rodriguez had surgery on his right knee last July and saw his power drop in the second half and postseason. He played in 99 games and hit 16 home runs. He has 629 career homers.

Cashman says Rodriguez is "100 percent" right now and that there are "no red flags" going into spring training. Cashman says he expects Rodriguez to be able to play every day.

The Yankees also said they've reached agreement with 37-year-old lefty Hideki Okajima for a nonroster invite to spring training. Once a staple of the Boston bullpen, he spent most of last year in Triple-A for the Red Sox. The Yankees envision him as a possible lefty specialist.

China, Japan to trade in own currencies

Published: Dec. 27, 2011 at 1:16 AM

BEIJING, Dec. 27 (UPI) -- China and Japan, the world's second- and third- largest economies, plan to trade in their own currencies instead of U.S. dollars, officials said.

The announcement came during the two-day China visit of Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda, The New York Times reported.

Japan also would seek to acquire yuan-denominated Chinese bonds, which the Times said would allow it to add yuan reserves to its foreign-exchange holdings.

China currently is the world's largest creditor to the United States with most of its foreign exchange reserves of $3.2 trillion held in U.S. dollars. Japan has the world's second-largest reserves with $1.3 trillion.

The Times said the currency deal would help the two to move away from using the U.S. dollar, even as China seeks to make its yuan more widely used.

The U.S. dollar currently is the world's reserve currency. The Chinese yuan is not yet fully convertible.

"Chinese officials have made it clear that they believe the international economy is too heavily dominated by the dollar," Professor Charles Kupchan at the Georgetown University told the Times. "They believe, as part of China's rise, that the international system should move to a more balanced structure."

He said the yuan is not yet ready to compete as a global reserve currency, but the agreement with Japan "could be a baby step in that direction."

As China and Japan are neighbors with likelihood of one becoming the main trading partner of the other, it makes sense for them to trade directly without using dollars, said Professor Jeffrey Bergstrand at the University of Notre Dame.

The Times said the move could help the yuan appreciate against other currencies. China currently is seen as artificially keeping the yuan undervalued which helps its to run surpluses against its trading partners.

Avastin Passes Test in Delaying Ovarian Cancer (LiveScience.com)

For women with advanced cases of ovarian cancer, the drug Avastin adds about four months to the time it takes for the cancer to worsen, according to a new report.

Patients treated with Avastin in addition to chemotherapy had about 14 months before their advanced ovarian cancer progressed, compared to about 10 months for those in the study who were ?treated with chemotherapy and a placebo.

An early analysis of the trial's results was presented in June 2010 at the meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology; the complete report from the trial appears today (Dec. 28) in the New England Journal of Medicine.

This was the third clinical trial to show that adding Avastin to standard chemotherapy treatments extends the time before ovarian cancers progress, said Dr. Carol Aghajanian, chief of gynecologic medical oncology service at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City.

"This is good news for women with ovarian cancer," said Aghajanian, who was not involved in the new study.

The European Commission approved Avastin as a treatment for ovarian cancer this month, but it is unclear whether the drug will be approved to treat this cancer in the United States, Aghajanian said. The Food and Drug Administration will be looking at the data.

The drug, made by pharmaceutical company Genentech, is designed to inhibit the growth of blood vessels that feed a tumor. It is currently approved to treat certain types of colon, lung, kidney and brain cancers, while the FDA recently disallowed its use for breast cancer.

Preventing cancer from worsening

The new report is based on 1,873 ovarian cancer patients who had been assigned at random to three groups. One received chemotherapy treatments along with a placebo; one received Avastin (generically known as bevacizumab) along with chemotherapy at the start of their treatment, then received only chemotherapy for the rest of their treatment; the third group received Avastin along with chemotherapy for the entirety of their treatment. The patients did not know which treatment they were receiving; neither did the doctors treating them.

The researchers measured the blood levels of a marker called CA-125 to determine whether the patients' cancers were progressing. CA-125 levels are a very early marker of worsening cancer, Aghajanian said. Levels of CA-125 begin to rise before a growing cancer is visible on a CT scan.

"They used a very conservative method of measuring progression, so we can be certain that it's meaningful," Aghajanian said.

Whether Avastin could extend patients' lives is a tricky question to try to answer with studies, Aghajanian said. At the end of this trial, for example, the patients and their doctors were told whether they had received Avastin or the placebo treatment, and it was entirely possible that those who had been on the placebo then received Avastin, she explained. Such a crossover in treatments after a study's conclusion would make it difficult to later determine whether patients who received a drug during a trial lived longer.?

Avastin and breast cancer

There are important differences between the studies of Avastin as a treatment for breast cancer and the studies of its use for ovarian cancer, Aghajanian said.

In November the FDA revoked its approval of Avastin to treat breast cancer because studies showed that breast cancer patients treated with it did not live any longer, and faced significant risks of severe side effects such as small holes developing in the intestines. The drug had been cleared by the FDA in February 2008 under an "accelerated approval" process based on promising early studies, allowing Avastin to be used for breast cancer patients while Genentech did further research.

"There was not a consistent benefit seen in the breast cancer studies," Aghajanian said. By contrast, three studies of the drug's use in ovarian cancer showed a consistent benefit.

The safety of the drug as seen in the new study "was reassuring," Aghajanian said, as was the finding that patients taking the drug reported no difference in their quality of life from patients receiving the placebo.

The rate of patients who developed gastrointestinal perforations was twice as high among those who received Avastin as among those who received a placebo, but the rate was still under 3 percent.

Elevated blood pressure was seen in more patients who received Avastin throughout the study than in those who received the drug only at the beginning or not at all.

Pass it on: A third study has found the drug Avastin can delay the worsening of advanced ovarian cancer.

CROUSE, NC -- Heather Stultz wants to redefine what?s considered offensive, at least what is considered offensive by Facebook anyway.

Facebook told Stultz a photo of a baby breast feeding on her breast feeding support page called ?Respect the Breast?, is offensive and violates Facebook?s policy on ?pornography?.

?It blew me away, I can?t believe that someone would think that something so natural and so nurturing and caring could turn it into something so dark and nasty, it?s not like that,? Stultz said.

Facebook?s policy says it prohibits content that is ?hateful, threatening, defamatory, or pornographic?? or "contains nudity."

Stultz?s page has 1,462 members and contains dozens and dozens of photos of women breastfeeding their babies.

Stultz wonders if these photos are any worse or any more offensive than photo?s we found on pornstar Jenna Jameson?s Facebook page.

?It?s OK to look at this? But it?s not OK to see a mother breast feeding her baby," Stultz said ?And, we found over 100 pages with either pornographic or suggestive stuff on them and they are still up and running that have millions of fans.?

Supporters of breast feeding wrote in to say it hurts them when people see breast feeding as ?vulgar?.

Women siding with Stultz have started a Facebook petition to let the photos stay. So far more than 1,600 members have signed on to protect images they say are natural, not nasty.

?Back before there was formula, that was how you fed your children, you didn?t put it in the microwave and shake it. It?s raw on tap and is the perfect temperature, it?s liquid gold,? Stultz said.

It?s Stultz?s fight to feed and post and in the process gain respect.?

Louisville coach Rick Pitino to quit college basketball when contract expires

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) -- Rick Pitino said Tuesday that he won't coach past the 2016-2017 season when his current contract ends at Louisville.

"When you're 59, you're realistic that you don't have a whole lot of years left," Pitino said at a news conference before the No. 4 Cardinals play Georgetown on Wednesday. "My contract's going to run out in 2017. I'm not coaching any more after that."

The former Providence and Kentucky coach has guided the Cardinals to a 12-0 record so far this season.

Louisville's Athletic Association granted Pitino, the only men's coach to lead three different programs to the Final Four, a four-year contract extension in August. He'll make $3 million in base salary until the end of the 2013 season, followed by $3.9 million a year.

Pitino didn't use the word 'retire,' but has said in the past that Louisville would be his last coaching stop. He's 253-96 in his 11th season at Louisville, which reached the Final Four in 2005.

The Cardinals will host the Hoyas in their Big East Conference opener before traveling to face rival and No. 3 Kentucky on Saturday.

Pitino said Louisville hasn't started preparing for Kentucky.

"One thing I've learned to do with my age, I really don't look ahead," said Pitino, who went 219-50 in eight seasons at Kentucky and won the 1996 national championship. "For years, I've been preaching the precious present and having to always subscribe to it."

Senior guard Chris Smith echoed his coach.

"We haven't talked about Kentucky one time yet, and we're going to keep it like that until we come out with a W tomorrow," he said.

NFL notes: Green Bay?s Aaron Rodgers named AP Male Athlete of the Year

Green Bay, Wis. ? When Aaron Rodgers needs to rekindle the feelings that drove his rise from a junior college quarterback to Super Bowl MVP, he doesn?t have to look too far.

Rodgers held on to the many rejection letters he received from marquee college programs as he was coming out of high school. Even today, he leaves a few of them sitting out at his house.

?I chose the couple that I thought were most demeaning to display in a space in my house that really nobody is able to see but myself,? Rodgers said. ?It?s something that I think is important to keep fresh on your mind. Maybe not every day, but once a week your eyes might pan across it and you have a little laugh about the journey you?ve been on ? at the same time, remembering that there still are people out there that you can prove something to.?

Rodgers is the 2011 Male Athlete of the Year, chosen by members of The Associated Press, after he turned in an MVP performance in the Green Bay Packers? Super Bowl victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers in February and then went on to lead his team on a long unbeaten run this season.

Rodgers received 112 votes out of the 212 ballots submitted from U.S. news organizations that make up the AP?s membership. Detroit Tigers pitcher Justin Verlander finished second with 50 votes, followed by tennis standout Novak Djokovic (21), Carolina Panthers rookie quarterback Cam Newton (6) and NASCAR champion Tony Stewart (5).

Rodgers is one of three quarterbacks to receive the honor in the past five years. The New Orleans Saints? Drew Brees won in 2010 and the New England Patriots? Tom Brady won in 2007.

Around the league

Bears ? Quarterback Josh McCown will start an NFL game for the first time in four years when he lines up behind center for the Bears at Lambeau Field against the Green Bay Packers on Sunday night.

Cowboys ? Super Bowl ticket-holders displaced during the February seating fiasco at Cowboys Stadium filed court documents, renewing fraud claims against the NFL and the Dallas Cowboys. Cowboys owner Jerry Jones is accused of recklessness in pushing for a new Super Bowl attendance record at the Cowboys? new stadium.

Steelers ? Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker James Harrison understands his helmet-to-helmet hit on Cleveland quarterback Colt McCoy was illegal by the letter of the law. He can also understand, grudgingly, why the NFL suspended him one game as punishment for a series of similar hits over the last 3 seasons.

Jade Doskow: Shadowplay in Brooklyn (PHOTOS)

There is something magical about industrial neighborhoods---the long, empty blocks of warehouses, weeds sprouting here and there between the sidewalk cracks, hodge-podge fences created out of different metals. This poetic atmosphere becomes magnified at night, when the streetlights illuminate these seemingly innocuous structures. There is a peaceful solitude hard to find in other parts of the city streets. I made these pictures mostly between 2 and 6 a.m. to make the most of the deep bluish-purple sky and special atmosphere of time and place, and used long exposures (between 2 and 12 minutes) to emphasize the soft, secret movements of branches and weeds in the wind. These were all photographed by the South Brooklyn waterfront in New York.

This turn-of-the-century had such a presence at night; it seemed to take slow, heavy breaths that reverberated throughout the street.

MIT to launch MITx learning platform, offer free teaching materials in 2012

Want a degree from MIT without the expense or notoriously selective application process? Well, you're still out of luck, we're afraid, but the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's new MITx online learning system will at least give you a chance to access a variety of course materials for free. The institution will also make the MITx platform available to other schools for publishing their own content, and will even offer assessments with the option of earning a certificate of completion -- issued by a not-for-profit entity with a "distinct name to avoid confusion," of course. Naturally, "online-only non-MIT learners" will not have the same level of access as MIT students, who will also use the platform to access their own course material, but won't have the option of replacing an on-campus experience with exclusively online classes. MITx is scheduled to go live next spring, but you can get a head start on that fictional MIT degree by checking out OpenCourseWare, which has been serving up similar content for the better part of a decade.

Nintendo completes 3DS Ambassador program, delivers ten GBA games to early adopters

If you've still got the 3DS price drop blues, perhaps a fresh (and final) infusion of free games will help. Early adopters that signed into the Nintendo eShop before August 11th will find ten GameBoy Advance games tacked on to their handheld's purchase history, retrievable via the same clunky redownload system that delivered the 3DS Ambassador program's NES titles. Thankfully, the unintuitive process is relatively simple -- just hop into the eShop's menu, scroll down to "Settings / Other", and select "Your Downloads," to claim your (potentially-exclusive) games. Short of having a 3DS guide us through the Louvre, we can't think of a better use for Nintendo's fledgling handheld.

The Iraq War and the Steep Price of American Bravado (ContributorNetwork)

COMMENTARY | President Obama marked the end of the war in Iraq on Wednesday, December 14, but his salute of returning troops was no declaration of victory. Obama's low-key wrap-up of the war contrasts starkly with President George W. Bush's infamous "mission accomplished" celebration. That celebration, which marked the end of major combat operations, was full of the self-assured bravado that led us into the Iraq War.

Where is that bravado now?

Now, a decade past the "shock and awe" bombardment meant to lead to the Iraqi forces' quick collapse, it's fair to ask whether America's achievements were worth their steep cost.

The Iraq War did produce some desired results. America might not have found the weapons of mass destruction it insisted justified invasion, but it did -- along with its allies -- depose a ruthless dictator whose unpredictability destabilized the Persian Gulf. Connections between Al-Qaeda and Iraq now appear to have been largely puffery, manufactured to justify military action to the ordinary Americans who bore the cost, both economic and human, of the war and occupation. But America made clear to the world the lengths to which it would go to protect its security interests.

But do those achievements justify the 4,500 lost and 32,000 wounded Americans? Perhaps. The better question might be, do they justify the loss of 100,000 Iraqi lives and the possibly irreparable damage to America's status as global beacon for freedom and justice?

I recall sharing dinner with a friend shortly after the war's start. "This war will be the first crack in America's foundation," my friend told me. "One day we'll look back and see [the Iraq War] as the beginning of America's end."

Those comments still strike me as overstatements. But it's true that, due in large part to the Iraq War, America's reality has shifted. We fought a war we couldn't really afford, for a people whose allegiances we misjudged, based on tragically mistaken justifications, with an ill-formed exit strategy. Our actions at Abu Ghraib revealed to the world that Americans, too, are capable of cruelty. The deaths of 100,000 Iraqis will stain our political relations in the Gulf for generations to come.

The chief consequence of the war for Americans is that we have been forced to confront the reality that America is fallible, our security depends on international cooperation, and until we tend to our own democracy's blemishes, we have no business defining democracy for others.

I can't imagine that the destruction of so many lives was unavoidable. But if these are the tough lessons we've learned, I'm glad such painful losses won us something.

The Automotive History Hub | Automotive News

The museum was opened on 06 July 1974 and has observed over 1.five million visitors from all the 50 United States and other people from over 40 other countries. The museum was born from Auburn Automobile Firm (the former national headquarters of the Auburn Automobile Firm) which was the hub of manufacturing of some of the Auburn and cord automobiles seen along the Auburn streets.

The museum boasts of 3 story floors holding much more than 120 cars manufactured in the 1894 ? 1999 years with specialization in the Auburn, Duesenberg and Cord automobiles producing it the greatest and widespread display centre of such automobiles in the world. Having earned its automotive accreditation in 1997 from the American Association of Museums (AAM), the museum boasts of high standards, retained exceptional reputation, accountability, continued improvements and field reorganization standards. It has retained these factors from the time of accreditation to the present times generating it a major visitor attraction zone over the past years which has lead to it becoming awarded some of the most prestigious awards in the world such as becoming listed in the ?Top Ten Gearhead Destinations in the United States? by MSNBC News in 2007.

For an automotive visitor in the United States, this is a ?must? destination for them, it has all that one will urge to see and understand from the automotive history makers. It takes one back to the earlier years of the 1930s and gives one the actual impression of how the automobile industry was in those years. Although history has developed because the opening of the museum, its reputation and dedication has remained intact to push the Auburn automotive legacy a lot more years ahead. Their ultimate dedication has kept visitor flow to the museum, which opens from 9 am to five pm every day to welcome individual and family members members who may well want to explore the magnificent hub of automotive history. The museum holds some of the history creating vehicle models, which incorporate a 1936 Cord 810 Westchester Sedan which is one of the few units incorporated with a bustle trunk(there are rare or no chances of seeing the other units unless they have been well maintained considering that then). A 1929 Chrysler Imperial Roadster, which is created of Locke body parts and has won the CCCA (Classic Automobile Club of America) and the AACA (Antique Automobile Club of America) senior awards. The museum plans to hold an annual event with inclusion of live auctioning of some of these legendary automobiles with the auction proceeds been forwarded to the Auburn Cord Duesenberg Museum. This makes the finest of events particularly for classic automobile lovers who will have to invest as small as for the auctioning ticket. Other vehicles to be auctioned consist of a 1930 Auburn Speedster that has been customized and repaired over the period to sustain its original style, a 1976 Cadillac El Dorado Bicentennial Convertible with exclusive features such as retained original characteristics and an odometer read of 32 miles only!

The museum defines the true automotive history and at one point of life of an automobile lover, they really should plan to pay a visit to the magnificent automotive history holder.

IDC: iPad maintains tablet dominance, HP's TouchPad fire sale burned brightly

While the Android tablets continue to roll in, Apple can still lay claim to the lion's share of the tablet market according to IDC's latest report. Its research suggests that the iPad holds onto 61.5 percent of the worldwide market share, down from 63.3 percent last quarter. Android devices in total also saw a slight contraction, down from 33.2 percent to 32.4 percent. This is partly explained by the HP TouchPad's final hurrah, which rocketed the ill-fated webOS tablet up to third place with a 5 percent of share of tablet sales and an estimated 903,354 devices sold. Samsung maintained its Honeycomb tablet crown, nabbing 5.6 percent of all tablet sales. The Korean manufacturer was closely tailed by Barnes and Noble's Nook Color with 4.5 percent and Asus, arriving at fifth place with a four percent share. Tablets in total sold less than the analysts had predicted, although growth has still exploded 264 percent compared to this time last year. Meanwhile, E-readers outperformed estimates, with 6.5 million E-readers sold in the third quarter, up 165.9 percent from last year. IDC expects some disruptive new tablets will spice up the fourth quarter results and you can take a look at its findings and predictions at the full press release below.
