Freshly-leaked 'Galaxy S3' photo seems to confirm earlier images

We've averaged at least one Galaxy S3 rumor or leak per day over the past week, and it's a trend that shows no sign of stopping. Today UK blogs PhoneArena and KnowYourMobile both received a new photo purporting to show the Samsung Galaxy S3, and from what we can tell of the (admittedly grainy) image, it's a very close match to what we've seen in earlier leaks. The rounded edges closely resemble the outline in a teaser image by Samsung Denmark, and the device chassis itself is a dead ringer for a purported manual sketch that cropped up yesterday.

The inclusion of physical buttons is the most interesting thing we can glean from this latest image -- if this is indeed the final Galaxy S3 design, then it seems earlier plans to go buttonless were abandoned. And it's also worth noting the extremely thin bezel between the screen and the edge of the device -- Samsung seems to have shaved a few millimeters off this space compared to the Galaxy Nexus.

With the clock ticking down to the May 3 announcement event in London, it's possible we'll see even more leaks and speculation in the days ahead. Keep it locked to AC for all the latest.

UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones now will have divided loyalties come this football season. His younger brother, Chandler, was drafted by the New England Patriots. Jones' older brother Arthur plays for the Baltimore Ravens.

As Les Carpenter pointed out in this must-read piece, the Jones family is one of the most-athletic in America. All three sons are now professional athletes. In an interview with Cagewriter, Jon once said that Chandler is the best of them all.

HTC One X case: Clear hard shell gets some forum love

We know, we know. You folks are chomping at the bit -- especially here in the U.S. -- to get your hands on an HTC One X. (We've still got a couple weeks before it drops on AT&T here.) But for the moment, let's talk about the HTC One X case.

We've already given you a little preview of HTC's own slim case. (Actually, that's us calling it a "slim case." HTC didn't even have a name for it yet when we saw it last week.) It's a really thin plastic deal that snaps onto the phone, offering some pretty basic protection. We've seen two versions -- one with a series of circles, and another that kind of looks like window blinds. The idea was that HTC didn't want to break up the underlying look and feel of the device. But while the cases certainly are slim (and they do fit very nicely), the designs are a bit on the extreme side. We'll just have to see how popular they are when they're finally made available. (And, no, we don't know when that will be.)

And we've done a full-blown review of the HTC One X Hard Shell Case with a flip stand.

But now we're getting another look at a new case -- and one that definitely lets the design of the phone shine through. Chrisjcks has posted a series of pics in our HTC One X forums showing the phone in the official HTC clear hard shell case. No crazy designs this time, just some pretty basic protection that still lets the polycarbonate shell of the phone show through.  One piece of bad news is that it looks like the charging contacts are covered, which means you'll need to remove the case to use the phone in one of HTC's docks. (The crazy-designed cases we played with last week will actually work with the docks -- no removal required.)

Jennifer Lawrence opened up recently about that squirrel-skinning scene in "Winter's Bone" during her Rolling Stone interview. When asked if it was real or courtesy of movie magic, the actress, who was nominated for an Oscar for her work in the film, said, "I should say it wasn't real, for PETA — but screw PETA."

PETA isn't taking her comments lightly. They released a statement to E! News responding to the actress' apparent dis. "She's young and the plight of animals somehow hasn't yet touched her heart. As Henry David Thoreau said, 'The squirrel you kill in jest, dies in earnest.' When people kill animals, it is the animals who are 'screwed,' not PETA, and one day I hope she will try to make up for any pain she might cause any animal who did nothing but try to eke out a humble existence in nature," PETA president Ingrid Newkirk said.

E! News further reported that despite it seeming like skinning a squirrel didn't bother her, in an interview with E! in 2010, Lawrence confessed to getting emotional when learning how to do it for real when her brother's friend demonstrated the process. "He cut it open," she recalled. "And then I went and cried in the house and let him finish."

PETA predicts a more positive relationship between Lawrence and animals in the future. "That was just a throw-away remark and we have our bet on Jennifer ending up joining the ranks of other young celebrities like Natalie Portman, Lea Michele, and Kellan Lutz, who are using their influence to help animals," their statement read.

20-Nothings: GIRLS vs. SEX & THE CITY: how will they be different ...

I've been thinking a lot lately about HBO's new series GIRLS, HBO's old series SEX & THE CITY, and my three little sisters.

HBO's new series GIRLS (created by 25-year-old phenom Lena Dunham) is about the career and sexual trials and tribulations of four, young 20-something women trying to make it in today's New York/Brooklyn.

HBO's old series SEX & THE CITY was about the sexual and career trials and tribulations of four, mid-30-something women trying to find love and success in the Manhattan of the 1990s.

And my three little sisters are 18-25-year-old women who may or may not find either of those set-ups compelling.

What does today's 18-year-old think about SEX & THE CITY? Does she find it outdated and irrelevant? Does she relate to the characters? Does it help or hurt her own thoughts about how dating, love, and sex should be?

Is it the same for a 23-year-old? Is she just far enough behind my 28/29-year-old peers and I to find that version of a New York woman something of the past? Is a 25-year-old's opinion the same as my set of friends and me. My 25-year-old sister lives in Manhattan right now. Does she watch S&TC and think, "that's my best friends and me," or does she see a preview for GIRLS and think, "that's more like it." (ed note: yes, I have that many sisters)

I watched every episode of S&TC. For me, it was an exploration in relationships, sexuality and independence. I didn't buy everything Carrie/Miranda/Samantha/Charlotte were selling, but I loved the world they inhabited. It seemed equal parts care-free and serious, mature and child-like, real and ridiculous. In hindsight I realize those characters were exaggerations of actual female perspectives, not women to fashion oneself against (which is a whole other post for another time), but I watched it and thought, that's the New York City I'd like to inhabit...Aiden and all.. To me, those characters had created lives for themselves and were now trying to find love to match (even Samantha, to a certain extent).

Would my sisters give S&TC that same review? Would they view it as mostly fact, somewhat fiction? Or do they/would they watch it and think, "look at those funny 90's women thinking funny 90's things!"

I don't know whether or not GIRLS will bear any resemblance to HBO's first, four-female franchise. It's about post-grads just trying to eek by in a very different time. The do not yet have careers, they do not yet have several serious loves under their belts, and they do not yet have Manolo Blahnik money. So far I have only seen the first episode, but from that brief introduction to their world, I can tell you that the GIRLS girls seem to be floundering. That makes sense because they're 22, not 35, but watching it I felt like there was a desperation to their lives that didn't exist for Carrie and Co. Again, that may be their age, and it may also be the age we now live in. Maybe I'm too detached from S&TC to see the direct parallels? Maybe I'm just too much older than Lena Dunham and crew to relate to their struggle. Or maybe all TV shows about four, female friends are going to play up their weaknesses and immaturity vs. their confidence and wisdom? S&TC felt mostly wise and thoughtful but sometimes ridiculous and unrealistic. Will GIRLS be the same, or the reverse? Are 25-year-old, NYC-dwellers more ridiculous and unrealistic than they are thoughtful and wise? I'd like to think I was a healthy mix of both, but it's hard to see the forest through the happy hour haze.

I'll be watching GIRLS and recapping each episode here on the blog so we can see how much we do or do not relate to the first series since S&TC that's attempted to capture our generation's view on the world. And, if I can convince them to help, I'll be peppering in the thoughts of my three little sisters as well.

Maybe four, female best friends of any age range in any city are going to experience the exact same things? Or maybe GIRLS will re-write the S&TC world to look like something we've never seen before?

Washington scores high for government transparency

Washington is one of the best states when it comes to government openness and transparency, according to three reports released in the past few weeks.

Washington ranks third in the country as a "leader of integrity and governmental transparency," according to The Center for Public Integrity (CPI). The CPI report card grades the state's corruption risk, and is based on 330 separate metrics. Among the metrics looked at by CPI are internal auditing practices, ethics enforcement and open communication.

Washington is also boosted in these reports, thanks to being the first state to pass a public records act. That helped the state earn an 80 percent grade or higher for public disclosure measurements.

Gov. Christine Gregoire was pleased with the results.

"These awards recognize the important work Washington state has done to build trust and increase transparency across state government," Gregoire said in a news release. "It is imperative that we continue to build trust and embrace open communication across all governmental bodies. Our citizens depend on and expect transparency in their government. Continuing to meet these expectations is a top priority."

The second report in recent weeks to give Washington kudos for transparency came from the U.S. Public Interest Research Group, which gave the state a B grade. According to Gregoire's office, this group noted Washington's "marked improvement over the past year in how the state provides online access to public spending data." The state's overall score of 85 was one of the largest improvements recorded by the U.S. Public Interest Research Group's study.

The last group to give Washington a thumbs up for transparency came from the Sunshine Review, which pores over more than 6,000 state and local governments nationwide when compiling its report. The Sunshine Review gave Washington a perfect score and a "Sunny Award" for best government website for Access Washington, the state's portal to all things government related. Access Washington received an "A+" for allowing easy and user friendly access to state residents looking for more information on the state government.
