It's "Ex-Factor" for Abdul, Scherzinger, Jones (omg!)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Simon Cowell gave his talent show "The X Factor" a major shake-up, showing the door to host Steve Jones, judge Nicole Scherzinger, and even his old friend Paula Abdul after a lackluster first season on U.S. television.

Cowell and broadcaster Fox confirmed on Tuesday that British host Jones, and former Pussycat Dolls singer Scherzinger would not be returning for the second season of the show in September.

Abdul -- Cowell's old "American Idol" sparring partner -- was also voted off in what some industry watchers called a bloodbath for the TV show that failed to measure up to its hype last year and struggled to achieve the top-level viewership promised by Cowell.

"Yes, it's true; I won't be returning to The X Factor next season," Abdul said in a statement on Tuesday. "I've learned through my longevity in this industry that business decisions often times override personal considerations. Simon (Cowell) and I, along with Fox and Fremantle, have been communicating about this for a while now, and I have absolute understanding of the situation."

Abdul said that Cowell "will remain a dear friend of mine."

Cowell gave "a massive thank you to Paula, Nicole and Steve for being part of 'The X Factor' last year."

"Now is the time to thank them all for everything they did last year," he added in a statement

Fox reality programming chief Mike Darnell called Abdul "a remarkable talent" and said the network appreciated her contributions.

ABDUL EXIT SHOCKS

The shake-up leaves only Cowell, the "X Factor" creator and acerbic judge, and record producer Antonio "L.A." Reid left on the panel of the singing contest.

The ouster of Jones, seen as wooden and flustered in the live shows, was expected. He broke the news on Twitter, saying on Monday, "I won't be hosting next seasons 'X Factor' which is a shame but I can't complain as I've had a great time."

Scherzinger had also drawn criticism from audiences and some of her critiques were openly ridiculed by Cowell. But the exit of Abdul -- whom Cowell had courted assiduously for the show -- took industry watchers by surprise.

"Shocked to see Simon has fired Paula Abdul, Nicole and Steve from the X-Factor," tweeted Nigel Lythgoe, executive producer of "American Idol".

"X Factor Shake-Up continues! Paul Abdul ALSO out!" wrote TVLine.com. Industry website TheWrap.com called the firings an "X-Factor implosion".

There was no word on Tuesday on who would replace the three but speculation swiftly fell on singer Mariah Carey. Cowell said last year that she had been his top choice but she was sidelined because she was pregnant. Carey gave birth to twins in April.

Cowell launched "The X Factor" in the United States boasting that it would beat "American Idol" as the nation's most-watched TV show. But it drew less than 13 million viewers -- about half those who tune into "Idol" -- and many TV critics found it over-produced and too similar to "Idol".

Cowell admitted in December that he had been "a little too cocky" when he told brought the show over to the United States after years of success in Britain.

But he also told reporters that it would improve in its second season and Fox executives said in January that Cowell was planning "tweaks" for the new episodes ahead.

25 EU nations to sign treaty to stop overspending (AP)

BRUSSELS ? All European Union countries except Britain and the Czech Republic agreed Monday to sign a new treaty designed to stop overspending in the eurozone and put an end to the bloc's crippling debt crisis, while EU leaders also pledged to stimulate growth and employment.

The new treaty, known as the fiscal compact, was agreed at a summit of European leaders in Brussels on Monday. It includes strict debt brakes and makes it more difficult for deficit sinners to escape sanctions. The 17 countries in the eurozone hope the tighter rules will restore confidence in their joint currency and convince investors that all of them will get their debts under control.

"We have a majority of 25 that will now sign up to the fiscal compact," Swedish Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt said Monday night after the summit of European heads of government in Brussels.

Although the new rules only apply to the 17 euro states, the currency union wants to get broad support from the other EU states, in hopes the accord will eventually be integrated into the main EU treaty.

Britain had said in December it wouldn't sign the new treaty. Reinfeldt said the Czech Republic didn't sign because of parliamentary procedural problems.

"I don't want to stand in the way of what they think they should do," British Prime Minister David Cameron said of the other countries. "But this is not an EU treaty because I vetoed that."

Leaders at the summit also promised to stimulate growth and create jobs across the region, an acknowledgment that their exclusive focus on austerity has had painful side effects.

"Yes we need discipline, but we also need growth," said Jose Manuel Barroso, the president of the European Commission, the EU's executive arm.

The leaders pledged to offer more training for young people to ease their transition into the work force, to deploy unused development funds to create jobs, to reduce barriers to doing business across the EU's 27 countries and ensure that small businesses have access to credit.

However there was no offer of any new financial stimulus.

"We must do more to get Europe out of the crisis," the leaders said in a statement.

Barroso said that there is still euro82 billion ($107.5 billion) in development funds that have yet to be allocated that small and medium businesses can use for various purposes, including as guarantees to get funding from banks.

He also said the Commission will dispatch action teams to the eight countries where youth unemployment is the highest and help fund apprenticeships and young startups.

Europe's debt crisis has put the continent and its leaders in an almost impossible situation. While they have to slash their deficits to reassure the financial markets and investors, the crisis has also sent unemployment soaring. Many analysts, politicians and trade unions think that only government spending can restart growth.

Overall, 23 million people are jobless across the EU, 10 percent of the active population. In Spain, unemployment has soared to nearly 23 percent and closed in on 50 percent for those under age 25, leaving more than 5 million people out of work as the country slides toward recession.

Even the most influential countries in Europe, which are generally better off, are suffering. The French government was forced Monday to revise its growth forecast for the year from 1 percent down to just 0.5 percent.

Many now fear that Europe is on the verge of another recession, and the leaders in Brussels said that, while austerity is important, more needs to be done for growth. Economists often note that cutting spending is just one way to slash deficits; an equally important method is to boost growth, which increases the amount of money pouring into government coffers.

While the leaders focused on walking the line between reining in spending and stimulating growth, the elephant in the room was Greece.

Greece and its bondholders have come closer to a deal to significantly reduce the country's debt and pave the way for it to receive a much-needed euro130 billion ($170 billion) bailout.

French President Nicolas Sarkozy said Monday he hoped a final agreement on Greece would be achieved "in the coming days," either at a special meeting of eurozone finance ministers or leaders.

Negotiators for Greece's private creditors said Saturday that a debt-reduction deal could become final within the next week. If the agreement works as planned, it could help Greece avoid a catastrophic default, which would be a blow to Europe's already weak financial system.

But European officials are afraid that even that deal may not be enough to fix Greece's finances, with some blaming Athens for dithering on its promise to cut spending and introduce austerity measures.

Angela Serenity Day, Seventeen.
Image
Everything was perfect. For the past couple months it had truly been blissful. Angela had started to date a boy her freshmen year, Jack, and they had been steady for three years. When she had first started to date him she was giddy. He was the smartest kid in their grade, his parents were rich, and he had looks. He was the perfect guy and Angela never understood why he bothered to date her in the first place.

Things for the adolesent couple were grand their first year of dating. It wasn't until Angela had started to hang out with other kids that Jack began to show his true colors. Angela would never have even thought that she would want to cheat on him. Yet he somehow thought that she was sneaking behind his back with the captain of the basket ball team sophmore year. It was completely untrue and the only reason Angela was around the basket ball player in the first place was because he had a crush on her friend Amanda. He was getting Angela's help to ask Amanda out.

Jack didn't take it that way. He only say Angela laughing with another boy and it made his blood boil. He had finally snapped when Daniel, the basket ball player, had driven Angela home one night. When confronted about it, Angela had only laughed at Jack's silliness. Being laughed at was humiliating for Jack, and so he had hit Angela.

At first Angela denied it. Jack apologized immensely after that and she believed he would never do it again, but she was wrong. Jack's jealousy and rage continued to fester inside of him and he began to hit her more frequently. Angela tried to leave him when he had broken her arm. Jack was good for about a month after that and convinced Angela to stay with him. When he began to hit her again Angela didn't know what to do. She knew Jack loved her and didn't want to hurt her. She knew he needed help and he knew it two. They both stayed in a silly denial.

Angela approached him about getting help which only angered him further. After that she had resigned herself to be stuck in a relationship that was spiralling downwards. There was no hope.

That is, there wasn't any hope until she found the book.

Angela hadn't known where the book came or what it was for. There was only one page in the book and it was blank. Even still she was compelled to keep it. She hung onto it until the Christmas of her junior year when Jack had come to her in the night drunk as a skunk. She was terrified and cried as he tried to force himself on her and was relieved that he had failed.

At that point Angela sat in front of the blank page and poured her heart out. She wrote down in the most simplest of words.

'I wish he would stop beating me and be the tender boy I know he is.'

As soon as she had written her wish, and a couple tear stains later, Angela lost the book. She didn't know where it got placed or where she had lost it.

It wasn't long after that that things began to change. Jack had stopped hitting her and was sweet on her once more. Angela could scarcely dare to believe it and was afraid to. When he continued his gentle manner she wondered if writing her wish down in that book had something to do with it.

Now summer was coming and Angela bolted from her seat the moment the bell rang. Jack was taking her out for the evening to celebrate their freedom. She was truly happy because he was normal again and she didn't see him turning back to his old ways. She didn't know why he had changed, nor did she care if he stayed that way.

Everything was perfect.

Hindu Deities: Identify Images Of Gods And Goddesses (QUIZ)

The images of Hindu deities are colorful, sacred, dramatic -- and ubiquitous. They are depicted in Hindu calendars, worshipped in temples, have a place of honor in homes, and also stare at us from bags of rice and flour in the local Indian grocery store. For centuries, specially trained artisans have been sculpting stone images of Hindu divinities. Consecrated images of deities are known as murtis. Most Hindus believe that murtis are divine, and enable the worshipper to focus on the formless divine power, Brahman.

[Scroll down to take the quiz]

Each image of a Hindu deity is unique, tells a story and is rich in symbolism. Some deities are represented in more than one form. Each form highlights a particular aspect of their personality. Hindu deities are generally represented in human form, and are either male or female. Two noteworthy exceptions are Narasimha (half-man, half-lion), the fourth avatar of Vishnu, and Ardhanarishvara (half-man, half-woman), a composite androgynous form of Lord Shiva and his consort Parvati. Typically, images of Hindu deities have multiple heads and arms (usually to denote invincibility), carry distinctive weapons, and are mounted on lotuses or particular animals. Hindu gods and goddesses are the patrons of knowledge, wealth, and artistic disciplines. Many are personifications of natural forces like Agni (the god of fire) and Bhudevi (Mother Earth).

Most Hindus believe that there are 330 million gods and goddesses and that each represents an attribute of the Supreme Truth, Brahman. While there are some sects of Hinduism that do not worship murtis (for e.g., Arya Samaj, Assamese Vaishnavism), they are loved and revered by the majority of Hindus, especially within devotional sects of Hinduism. In temples and homes, deities are regularly given a ritual bath (Abhisheka), dressed, offered food, flowers and other offerings, and put to sleep.

Obama urges Congress to act in election year (AP)

CAMBRIDGE, Md. ? President Barack Obama rallied House Democrats for an election-year fight, urging them to work with Republicans if they show some willingness to put politics aside but telling the rank and file to call them out if they stand in the way.

Addressing Democrats on the final day of their three-day annual retreat, Obama outlined the political stakes over the next few months as congressional Democrats try to push his agenda in the face of Republican opposition, the GOP choses its nominee and signs of recovery in a fragile economy go a long way to determining his re-election chances and the party's fate.

Obama said Democrats should seize the opportunity "whenever there is a possibility that the other side is putting some politics aside for just a nanosecond in order to get something done for the American people, we've got to be right there ready to meet them," the president told the sometimes raucous crowd.

However, "where they obstruct, where they're unwilling to act, where they're more interested in party than they are in country, more interested in the next election than the next generation, then we've got to call them out on it," the president said. "We've got to push. We can't wait; we can't be held back."

Coming off a three-day tour to promote his State of the Union message, Obama promised a "robust debate about whose vision is more promising" when Republicans choose their nominee.

On a day when reports showed the economy picking up late in 2011 but still considered "fragile" by the White House, Obama told Democrats wondering about their re-election prospects: "It's going to be a tough election because a lot of people are still hurting out there and a lot of people have lost faith generally about the capacity of Washington to get anything done."

House Republicans, who held their retreat in Baltimore last week, have repeatedly said the election will be a referendum on Obama's policies, especially his handling of the economy.

The president acknowledged that Democrats have embraced parts of his agenda when it was politically difficult and in some cases costly. The party took a drubbing in the midterm elections, losing control of the House and seeing their ranks diminished in the Senate.

And despite some past clashes with House Democrats over his willingness to compromise with Republicans, Obama was warmly received and was introduced as "our champion" by Rep. John Larson of Connecticut.

The president returned the warmth with a vote of confidence that Democrats would win back the House in November, making a nod to their leader as "soon-to-be once-again Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi."

"I believe in you guys. You guys have had my back through some very tough times," said the president, who received a small gift ? a DVD of House Democrats singing Rev. Al Green's "Let's Stay Together."

Last week, at a fundraiser at the Apollo Theater in New York, Obama stood on the stage and crooned a line from the Green classic.

Democrats were upbeat at their three-day session, energized by Obama's State of the Union address and its populist themes as well as recent polls showing more Americans say the country is on the right track and approve of Obama's handling of the economy. Divisions in the Republican ranks that were on full display last year in the fight over extending the payroll tax cut and the bitter battle between Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich for the GOP presidential nomination also lifted Democratic spirits.

But the relationship with the White House hasn't always been cordial. Vice President Joe Biden, who addressed the Democrats prior to Obama's speech, described some of the rough patches.

He noted that several members in the room were mad at him in December 2010 after Obama negotiated an extension of President George W. Bush's tax cuts over the objections of some House Democrats. Last year, frustrated Democrats complained the Obama gave away too much in negotiating a spending bill and an agreement to raise the government's borrowing authority.

Biden said Pelosi told him at the last conference to "get tough. Enough is enough." He said the "message was heard. The message was heard. And I think we've delivered."

Biden said Democrats would reclaim the House and he would help candidates in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan, Iowa, New Hampshire and Florida. Those states also are critical to Obama's hopes of winning another term.

"We cannot succeed unless you all come back," Biden told House Democrats.

The vice president was more pointed in his political remarks than Obama and called out some Republicans by name. He said the American people will reject GOP unwillingness to compromise and its blatant determination to make Obama a one-term president.

Of the presidential candidates, Biden said Romney's criticism of the auto bailout and a host of positions stated by rival Newt Gingrich on government intervention will create a clear contrast for voters.

"These guys are helping us by saying what they believe," Biden said.

Former Boston Mayor Kevin White dies at 82 (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? Former Boston Mayor Kevin White, who led the city for 16 years and shepherded it through a period of racial tension and court-ordered school desegregation, died on Friday at age 82.

White, who was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease in 2003, died at his Boston home, family spokesman George Regan told local media.

Boston was torn by racial violence in the 1970s as the city implemented court-ordered busing to desegregate schools. White, who ran the city from 1968 to 1984, was lauded for focusing on protecting children caught in the unrest.

He arranged for police escorts for school buses after ones carrying black children were pelted with stones as they arrived in white neighborhoods.

White, a Democrat, was also credited with revitalizing Boston's downtown, including the reopening of the historic Faneuil Hall Marketplace.

"Tonight is a sad night for the city of Boston," Mayor Thomas Menino said in remarks carried on local news channel 7News, an NBC affiliate.

"Kevin was the new era of mayors: Young, liberal, progressive, and he's noted for his belief that the revitalization of downtown was important to making Boston a world-class city," he added.

White made an unsuccessful bid for Massachusetts governor in 1970, and two years later was seen as a potential contender to run for vice president alongside George McGovern, but was ultimately passed over.

White left political life in 1984, choosing not to seek a fifth term in office, after a number of city officials were indicted following a federal corruption probe into his administration. He was never charged with any crime.

After leaving office, White taught at Boston University.

Ex-Romanian dictator's gifts up for auction (AP)

BUCHAREST, Romania ? What did they give the dictator who had everything?

An African leopardskin or a silver dove ? a novel offering from the former Shah of Iran ? are just two examples of gifts received by Nicolae Ceausescu that will be auctioned off Thursday, on what would have been the late Romanian leader's 94th birthday.

The auction which is billed "the Golden Age" is a reference to the final years of Ceausescu's rule, when Communist Party officials painted a rosy picture of life in Romania, while, in reality, people struggled with food shortages, power outages and the dreaded Securitate secret police which kept tabs on the population of 23 million with an army of 760,000 informers.

Ceausescu, known as "the Genius of the Carpathians," was overthrown during the 1989 anti-communist uprising and executed with his wife Elena after a summary trial on Christmas Day, 1989.

"This auction is first of its kind gathering together objects from private collections and items that belonged to the family which were sold by the state," Mihail Stomff, head of private sales at Artmark auction house told the Associated Press. "The value is foremost a historical one."

So what's on offer Thursday and at what price?

There's a carpet depicting the family of the dictator that should have had pride of place in the People's Palace, a giant building that now serves as Romania's Parliament and was inspired from a visit to North Korea in the 1971, that has a starting price of euro800 ($1,035), a swanky pen that will go under the hammer for at least euro2,000 ($2,585) which Ceausescu received during a visit to Japan in 1975, and an assortment of furs which will sell for at least euro1,200 ($1,555).

Among the more eccentric items is a bronze yak given to Ceausescu by China's Mao Tse-tung and or gold-plated silver and enameled doves that Ceausescu received from the Shah of Iran in 1977.

There are also Communist-era posters, medals, photos and flags, up to 70 years old, some extolling Lenin and Stalin. A Time magazine from 1948 has Ana Pauker, a Romanian Communist Party leader on the front cover.

Some of the objects were initially auctioned in by the state organization charged with dealing with the dictator's goods and came back on the market through private owners.

Fascination with the former Romanian leader his lavish lifestyle is nothing new, but Thursday's sale is the first public sale of Ceausescu memorabilia in a decade.

In the past, auctioneers have offered custom-made sports utility vehicles which were used by the Ceausescu couple, and even pajamas which were snapped up, with unsold items donated to an old people's home.

Buyers from Japan, the U.S. and Britain have been among those that bought the dictator's memorabilia, and foreigners still appear to be fascinated with Ceausescu.

"The posters are superb. They reflect an era," said a Canadian buyer late Wednesday, who declined to give his name. "It will be interesting to see the profile of buyers tomorrow."

Too Few Americans Getting Screened for Common Cancers: CDC (HealthDay)

THURSDAY, Jan. 26 (HealthDay News) -- The number of Americans being screened for colon, breast and cervical cancers still fall below national targets, federal health officials said Thursday.

In 2010, 72.4 percent of women were being screened for breast cancer, below the target of 81 percent, for cervical cancer it was 83 percent of women, while the target is 93 percent, and for colon cancer 58.6 percent of Americans were screened, missing the target of 70.5 percent, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

"Not all Americans are getting the recommended screening for breast, cervical and colorectal cancer," said report co-author Mary C. White, branch chief of the CDC's Division of Cancer Prevention and Control. "There continue to be disparities for certain populations."

The screening rates are particularly low among Asians and Hispanics, according to the report in the Jan. 27 issue of Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report.

Among Asians, the screening rate for breast cancer was 64.1 percent, for cervical cancer it was 75.4 percent, and for colon cancer it was 46.9 percent.

Hispanics were less likely than non-Hispanics to have screening for cervical and colon cancer (78.7 percent and 46.5 percent, respectively), the researchers found.

Screening is important, said Dr. Stephanie Bernik, chief of surgical oncology at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City.

"Screening saves lives," she said. "When you catch a cancer at a smaller size it does affect outcome."

Some people may be confused about screening, because different medical groups have different screening protocols, Bernik said.

"It's hard to get people to do screening in general. People look for any excuse not to get screened. When they see there is a controversy about when to start screening, they look at it as an opportunity to not do the test," she said.

Bernik also admits that screening can result in some over-treatment.

"With screening comes that risk," she said. "Unfortunately, we are not at a point where we can select the patients that are not going to have a problem, so we treat everyone equally. So, there is a little bit of over-treatment but, overall, you are improving survival for many people."

The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommends that women aged 50 to 74 get a mammogram every two years to screen for breast cancer.

Women aged 21 to 65, or those who have been sexually active for three years, should have a Pap test to screen for cervical cancer at least every three years, the task force recommends.

For colorectal cancer, men and women aged 50 to 75 should be screened with a yearly fecal occult blood test or sigmoidoscopy every five years, or have a colonoscopy every 10 years.

Other highlights of the report include:

  • Breast cancer screening rates remained stable from 2000-2010, varying only about 3 percent.
  • Colon cancer screening rates increased from 2000-2010, to more than 58 percent for both men and women.
  • Cervical cancer screening rates dipped 3.3 percent from 2000-2010.
  • Screening rates for all these cancers was much lower among the uninsured or those who didn't have a regular doctor.

The Affordable Care Act is expected to lower these barriers to access by expanding insurance coverage, the authors said.

"Other efforts are needed, such as developing systems that identify persons eligible for cancer screening tests, actively encouraging the use of screening tests, and monitoring participation to improve screening rates," the authors added.

Sharapova into Australian Open final vs Azarenka (AP)

MELBOURNE, Australia ? Maria Sharapova has avenged her Wimbledon loss to Petra Kvitova and returned to the Australian Open final for the first time since winning 2008 title.

Sharapova broke Kvitova's serve in the last game to finish off a 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 victory and set up a championship match against third-seeded Victoria Azarenka. The third-seeded Belarusian ousted defending champion Kim Clijsters earlier Thursday to reach her first Grand Slam final.

Whoever wins the final also will gain the No. 1 ranking.

Sharapova lost to second-ranked Kvitova in the Wimbledon final last year, her first major final since returning in 2009 after a long time off the tour following a shoulder operation. She has won three majors, but none since the Australian four years ago.

"In the third set, I felt she always had the advantage because I was always down on my serve," said Sharapova, who served five double-faults in the third set and 10 in the match. "I just told myself you just gotta go for it, don't let her finish off the points like she likes to."

Azarenka won the early semifinal 6-4, 1-6, 6-3, twice recovering from periods when a resurgent Clijsters seemed to have the upper hand, breaking the veteran Belgian's serve three times in the third set to secure victory in only her second appearance in a major semifinal.

After a strong start, Azarenka's serve deserted her in the second set and Clijsters dictated play with her solid groundstrokes and some amazing defense.

But after getting the momentum back, it was Clijsters who blinked first in the third set, dropping serve in the second game and again in the fourth. She got two of those service games back, including one when she rallied from 40-0 down to win a game to get the score back to 4-3.

But Azarenka rallied immediately, breaking serve. She got triple match point trying to serve out the match and, after a double-fault on her first, she clinched it on a Clijsters' error.

The 22-year-old Belarusian threw her racket on the court and sank to her knees, bent over with her hands covering her face. Clijsters came around the net to congratulate her.

"I felt like my hand is about 200 kilograms and my body is about 1,000 and everything is shaking, but that feeling when you finally win is such a relief. My God I cannot believe it's over. I just want to cry," Azarenka said as she choked back tears, then buried her face in a towel.

"It was just trying to stay in the moment. Kim really took over the second set and I felt there was nothing I could do. I just tried to regroup."

Clijsters is a popular player in Australia, where she's widely known as "Aussie Kim." She had most of the backing from the crowd on the national holiday in what is likely to be her last Australian Open.

Azarenka held her nerve despite the crowd and the fact she was up against a proven big-match player. Clijsters has won four majors and has defended a Grand Slam title ? winning the U.S. Open in 2009 and '10. To reach the semifinals, she saved four match points despite a sprained ankle to beat French Open champion Li Na in the fourth round and then ousted top-ranked Caroline Wozniacki in the quarterfinals.

"I guess before you all thought I was a mental case. I was just young and emotional," Azarenka said in a courtside interview. "I'm really glad the way I fight, that's the most thing I'm really proud of. I fight for every ball."

Clijsters credited Azarenka with increasing maturity.

"The match was very close. There were a few deciding moments where I think I maybe had a little bit of an advantage, in the third set, especially that first game where I had break point," Clijsters said. "But, you know, she definitely played really well. She was playing very aggressive tennis, moving really well. So she deserved to win at the end."

On Wednesday night, top-ranked Novak Djokovic held off No. 5 David Ferrer in a second-set tiebreaker and then raced through the third set for a 6-4, 7-6 (4), 6-1 win, setting up a rematch of last year's final against fourth-ranked Andy Murray and ensuring the 'Big 4' reached the semifinals for the third time in the last four majors.

With Nos. 2-4 already in the semis, Djokovic looked to be in trouble in the second set when he clutched at his left hamstring and had trouble breathing.

"No, I don't have any physical issues," Djokovic later said, playing down any health concerns. "I feel very fit and I feel mentally, as well, very fresh."

Murray beat Kei Nishikori 6-3, 6-3, 6-1 earlier Wednesday, while second-ranked Rafael Nadal and No. 3 Roger Federer were already preparing for their semifinal showdown on Thursday, their 10th clash at a major but their first meeting at that stage of a Grand Slam since 2005.

EU wants "bold" peace bids by Palestinians, Israel (Reuters)

RAMALLAH, West Bank (Reuters) ? EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton will meet Israeli and Palestinian leaders over the next two days to try to push exploratory peace talks beyond a Thursday deadline and back to full negotiations.

Negotiators from the two sides have held four meetings in Amman, Jordan, this month, but so far there has been no breakthrough that would permit resumption of the top level talks that were suspended in late 2010.

A fifth meeting is scheduled for Wednesday and without compromise, the initiative could grind to a halt.

The European Union wants Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to set aside his 2010 demand that Israel call a total halt to Jewish settlement building in the occupied West Bank before full talks resume.

Israel is being urged to make confidence-building moves, which could include the release of long-term prisoners and easier conditions for Palestinians in Israeli army-controlled areas of the West Bank.

"The fact that negotiators are talking to each other face-to-face is encouraging," Ashton said in a statement.

"I'll be looking for positive signs from both sides that they are prepared to turn this progress into real gestures and negotiations."

Israel has signaled it is willing to carry on with the talks, meaning the pressure is on the Palestinians.

The so-called Quartet on Middle East peace diplomacy, which comprises the United States, the EU, Russia and the United Nations, said last September it wanted to see direct talks resumed by January 26, and completed in a year.

But Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak said Tuesday that January 26 "is not a sacred date" and that he believed the Quartet shared that view and that talks should go on.

NEW APPROACH NEEDED

Some analysts doubt whether Washington will be prepared to exercise its influence during a presidential election year. U.S. Republicans are eager to make inroads with Jewish voters, whose traditional loyalty to the Democratic Party has been tested by doubts about President Barack Obama's policies on Israel.

Other leaders have also expressed grave doubts about the peace process and urged a new approach.

"Should we accept a complete freeze between the Palestinians and Israelis, when the rest of the region is moving? We have to change the method," French President Nicolas Sarkozy said in an annual address to ambassadors on Jan 20.

"The Quartet has failed. Let's stop kidding ourselves. We have to widen the circle of negotiations and involve everybody who can help resolve the conflict."

Former Palestinian peace negotiator Nabil Shaath predicted failure for the latest talks, which are intended to set out the terms of negotiation on the borders of a future Palestinian state and its security arrangements with Israel.

"The government in Israel feels totally safe and they know that neither the Quartet nor any of its parties will put any pressure on them. Therefore, they are making fun of them and of us as well," he told Reuters.

He said a 21-point proposal presented by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu lacked any detail and was "rather a composition about peace done by a high school student."

Israeli officials are quoted as saying Abbas is preparing to let the process collapse again and "play the blame game."

On primary eve, Romney says SC race neck-and-neck (AP)

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. ? Mitt Romney sized up the 2012 presidential race in South Carolina as a neck-and-neck contest on the eve of the state's pivotal primary and insisted Friday that he's the one candidate Republicans can trust to "post up well" against President Barack Obama. He trained his criticism on Newt Gingrich, a sure sign of the momentum behind the former speaker's rise-and-fall-and-rise candidacy.

Rick Santorum and Ron Paul argued they were still in the mix as South Carolina's Sen. Jim DeMint declared the state a "two-man race." Santorum said he's finally drawing enough campaign contributions to compete aggressively in next-up Florida and beyond, even if he finishes poorly in South Carolina.

Romney, campaigning in Gilbert, acknowledged Gingrich's recent rise in the polls by singling him out as his chief competitor in the state Romney lost four years ago. In 2008, Romney abandoned South Carolina when it became clear he would lose big.

He called on Gingrich to release a more detailed accounting of the investigation into his ethical problems as House speaker, saying, "You know it's going to get out ahead of the general election." It was a sharp rejoinder to Gingrich's calls for Romney to quickly release his tax records.

Romney tried to frame a tight race as progress in the state he'd lost soundly before, although he's lost ground in recent polls.

"Frankly to be in a neck-and-neck race at this last moment is kind of exciting," he said

Romney called Gingrich "a feisty competitor" but argued the former House speaker was not the best man to put up against Obama. Surrogates to the former Massachusetts governor used a morning conference call with reporters to run down Gingrich's record on controlling government spending.

Rick Perry's departure from the race, a raucous Charleston debate on Thursday and fresh reminders of Gingrich's tumultuous personal life promised to make the dash to Saturday's voting frenetic and the intra-party attacks increasingly sharp.

Republican Party Chairman Reince Preibus, in an appearance on CNN, said "a little bit of drama" was good for the GOP as it sorts out the strongest challenger to Obama, and that the tone wasn't all that negative.

Santorum, who turned up on C-SPAN, said the GOP presidential race "has just transformed itself in the last 24 hours" and that he's still very much part of the mix.

At an appearance in Lexington, he offered himself as a just-right "Goldilocks" candidate, positioned between Gingrich and Romney.

"One candidate is too radioactive, a little too hot," Santorum said, referring to Gingrich. "There's too much about that candidate that we don't want to have" in a race that must focus on Obama's record, he said. "And we have another candidate who is just too darn cold, who doesn't have bold plans," Santorum said, alluding to Romney.

Romney supporters, in the call with reporters, said Gingrich oversaw rampant spending on lawmakers' special projects when he was House speaker. Rep. Jeff Flake, R-Ariz., called Gingrich "the granddaddy of earmarks." Rep. John Campbell, R-Calif., said Gingrich was "the guy who began the process which led to the debts and deficits that we have."

Romney, whose lead has shrunk in the race's closing days, opened Friday with fresh endorsements from Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell and three House members from Texas who lined up with him now that Perry is out of the race.

Gingrich, buoyed by Perry's endorsement, concentrated his efforts on the heavily pro-military Charleston area.

A day after questions about Gingrich's second marriage arose, Gingrich's third wife, Callista, was front and center when the couple appeared at The Medical University of South Carolina Children's Hospital. Mrs. Gingrich read her book, "Sweet Land of Liberty," to six children in a hospital play area as her husband watched from the sidelines and chatted with pediatricians.

Earlier, Gingrich scrapped an appearance at the Southern Republican Leadership Conference due to what campaign aides said was poor attendance. Conference organizers blamed a scheduling conflict.

The libertarian-leaning Ron Paul, whose support has slipped with his light campaign effort here, went ahead with his address to the Southern Republican group and said Saturday's primary could be a "significant event" that will help propel his insurgent campaign forward. He also warned voters not to back candidates who support the status quo and who won't make deep cuts to federal spending.

DeMint, appearing on CBS' "This Morning," predicted that Saturday's victor "is likely to be the next president of the United States."

Romney seemed to agree. His campaign released a new web ad with the tagline: "On Saturday South Carolina Picks a President." The ad included words of praise for him from South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley and Arizona Sen. John McCain, the party's 2008 nominee.

Gingrich is trying to move beyond new allegations from an ex-wife that he had sought an open marriage before their divorce.

Santorum played aggressor during a Thursday night debate, trying to inject himself into what seemed increasingly like a Romney-Gingrich race.

Gingrich angrily denounced the news media for putting his ex-wife front and center in the final days of the race and spreading her accusations. "Let me be clear, the story is false," he said when asked at the opening of the debate about her interview.

Santorum, Romney and Paul steered clear of the controversy.

"Let's get onto the real issues, that's all I've got to say," said Romney. Later, he noted his 42-year marriage to wife, Ann.

Gingrich and Santorum challenged Romney over his opposition to abortion, a well-documented shift but a potent one in evangelical-heavy South Carolina.

Recent polls, coupled with Perry's endorsement, suggested Gingrich was the candidate with the momentum and Romney the one struggling to validate his standing as front-runner.

Gingrich released his income tax records during the course of the debate, paving the way to discussing Romney's. The wealthy former venture capitalist has said he will release them in April, prompting Gingrich to suggest that would be too late for voters to decide if they presented evidence Obama could exploit.

"If there's anything that's in there that's going to help us lose the election, we should know before the election. If there's not, why not release it?" Gingrich said. His effective tax rate, roughly 31.6 percent of his adjusted income, was about double what Romney told reporters earlier this week he had paid.

Romney, asked about the issue Friday on Fox News Channel, said he didn't want to give Obama and the Democrats a "nice little present of having multiple releases." He said past GOP nominees McCain and George W. Bush before him released their taxes at tax deadline time, and said he'd do likewise. He didn't say how many years of returns he would release.

Gingrich grappled with problems of a different, possibly even more crippling sort in a state where more than half the Republican electorate is evangelical.

Marianne Gingrich told ABC's "Nightline" that her ex-husband had wanted an "open marriage" so he could have both a wife and a mistress. She said Gingrich conducted an affair with Callista Bistek, now his wife, "in my bedroom in our apartment in Washington" while she was elsewhere.

These fantasy sports iPhone apps are worthy of their own store (Appolicious)

If you?re already tired of your group of friends who talk about their fantasy football teams like they?ve personally coached them, your life is about to get a little bit more frustrating. According to TechCrunch, CBS Sports is working on what is essentially an app store for fantasy sports apps.

As an avid and acknowledged fantasy sports nerd, an open platform for fantasy sports-related apps appeals to me in a very real way. But I?m sure I?d be scoffing a lot more if there was an app store for, say, car apps or something similarly niche, so I can understand the skepticism around this idea, too.

But if you?re already on board, there?s no reason to wait for CBS Sports? app store of sports apps. There?s plenty of valuable year round fantasy sports apps already available in your regular everyday iTunes App Store.

If you?re the type of fantasy sports player who has multiple leagues spread out over several different websites, Fantasy Monster Pro ($4.99) may seem a little pricey, but could be well worth the investment. The app lets you manage all of your Yahoo!, ESPN, and NFL.com fantasy teams under a single app. That?s a huge time saver if you?re got multiple leagues cooking, especially during the period of the year when the NBA, NFL and NHL are all going at the same time.

If that all seems a bit complex and you just need some news-centric apps to make sure you?re not going to be starting players that have been injured for a few weeks, there are a number of apps that might be of some use.

The free?Fanball.com Fantasy Sports News stands out not just because of its thorough video and text news updates, but also for its customizable player-follower. Users can create lists of the players on their fantasy teams to make sure the news they want is all easily accessible under one tab.

Rotoworld Fantasy News (also free) is another strong fantasy news option. You can quickly grab news, injury reports and well-researched analysis on players in the NFL, MLB, NBA, NHL, PGA golf and even NASCAR. Rotoworld?s player search function is also extremely easy to use, making finding players you?re curious about a breeze.

If you?d rather not limit your sources of information, the free?PlayerLine app brings together news from all over the web so you?ll always have the most varied and up-to-date info on your fantasy team. The app pulls news, bios and videos from Yahoo!, Digg, NFL.com, ESPN, MLB.com, CBS Sports and Fox Sports among other sources and feeds.

And if you just need some advice, well, get in line. But while you?re waiting in line, try out Fantasy Sports Coach (free). The app is essentially a forum for fantasy sports owners to ask for and offer advice to their fellow team owners. Now, if you make a bad decision to sit a guy who has a huge game, at least you can blame the crowd of strangers who offered you bad advice instead of your own poor research, and that?s always a good feeling.

While none of these apps will automatically take you from worst to first in whatever fantasy league you?re playing, they all should at least arm you with the knowledge you need to make better decisions. Heed the old proverb ? give a man fantasy sports advice, and he?ll win for a day, but teach a man how to properly navigate the tumultuous sea of fantasy football news, and he?ll win for a few more days.

Create a list of your favorite fantasy sports apps

APNewsBreak: Exxon reaches $1.6M spill settlement (AP)

BILLINGS, Mont. ? Exxon Mobil agreed Thursday to pay $1.6 million in penalties to the state of Montana over water pollution caused by a pipeline break last summer that fouled dozens of miles of shoreline along the scenic Yellowstone River.

Montana Department of Environmental Quality director Richard Opper said the penalties in the case mark the largest in the agency's history.

The Texas oil company will pay $300,000 in cash and spend $1.3 million on future environmental projects, according to a copy of the document obtained by The Associated Press.

Also Thursday, Exxon increased its estimate of how much crude spilled into the river during the July 1 accident near Laurel to 1,509 barrels, or more than 63,000 gallons.

That's up from earlier estimates of 1,000 barrels spilled ? a number that Gov. Brian Schweitzer had disputed as too low.

Schweitzer said Thursday that the settlement and revised spill estimate came only after the state pressured Exxon to be more accountable in the aftermath of the spill.

"They're not prepared to give you any accurate information if you don't hold their feet to the fire," the Democratic governor said.

In an emailed statement, Exxon spokesman Alan Jeffers reiterated that the company "takes full responsibility" for the accident.

"We are pleased to be able to resolve this environmental compliance issue with the State of Montana," Jeffers wrote of the settlement.

Only about 10 barrels of crude were recovered by cleanup crews, federal officials have said. That's less than 1 percent of the total spilled.

The cause of the spill remains under investigation.

The 12-inch Silvertip pipeline was buried just a few feet beneath the riverbed when it was installed 20 years ago. High water last spring and summer eroded that cover, which officials have speculated could have exposed the line to damaging debris.

Thursday's settlement came after more than three months of negotiations between attorneys for Exxon and the state.

The agreement contains provisions to shield the company against any future lawsuits from state agencies, although it will not become final until after a 30-day comment period.

"It was a significant violation. There were hundreds and hundreds of acres of land affected and it was a major oil spill," Opper said. He added the penalties likely would have been "a lot higher" if Exxon had not cooperated on the cleanup.

"They were responsible, but they really were committed to undoing the damage that was caused," he said.

The settlement requires continued monitoring of environmental damage by Exxon and for the company to clean up any more oil that is discovered. That includes any crude that might be stirred up when the Yellowstone rises again in the spring as mountain snow begins to melt.

Testing of river sediments near public water supply intakes also will be required.

As part of the settlement, Exxon will reimburse more than $760,000 in emergency response costs racked up by state agencies.

Regarding the change in how much crude spilled, Jeffers said the company recalculated the volume after discovering the pipeline had been completely severed during the July 1 accident near Laurel. Jeffers says pipeline breaches typically involve a crack or fissure. That was the assumption used to craft the initial estimate.

Jeffers added that the higher estimate would not have changed the response to the spill, which at its peak involved more than 1,000 Exxon Mobil contractors working to clean up oil-soaked sandbars, log jams and vegetation.

"None of this would have made any difference," he said.

Still pending against the company is a lawsuit from a group of riverfront property owners who are seeking tens of millions of dollars in damages over allegations that the company failed to properly clean up after the spill.

Plaintiffs' attorney Cliff Edwards said the company's revised spill estimate was suspect and that he had "no faith in that number." Edwards added that the settlement with the state did not alter the fact that the company failed to protect the line as the Yellowstone was flooding in the weeks leading up to the spill.

"They just continued to run crude," he said.

Attorneys for Exxon have asked U.S. District Judge Richard Cebull in Billings to dismiss the lawsuit. A decision is pending.

Since the spill, Exxon has since installed a new section of the pipeline buried several dozen feet beneath the riverbed.

Sony '2012 smartphone list' leaks -- Atlas, Hyabusa and Mint among the highlights

Atlas

Leaked product roadmaps are always good fun, giving us a cheeky glimpse at what a manufacturer or carrier may have planned for the next several months. The latest leaked roadmap to emerge comes from Sony, by way of GSMArena. According to the leaked list, the newly-minted Sony Mobile Communications has at least 11 unannounced devices in the pipeline for 2012. This is as unconfirmed and unofficial as it gets, so take this one with a pinch of salt. However, the information in the list does align somewhat with what we've heard from earlier Sony leaks. According to ?GSMArena?, all of the phones detailed in the roadmap run Android, and it should also be noted that we're dealing in codenames here, not official branding.

The first half of the year is supposedly dominated by the Xperia S, which we've just seen at CES, along with three new mid-to-entry-level phones -- the ST25i Kumquat, LT22i Nypon and MT27i Pepper. All three have surfaced before in earlier leaks, and we even saw some blurry-cam footage of the Pepper a few weeks back. The middle of the year apparently sees the release of a slew of phones, including the Tapioca, a budget offering, and the Hyabusa, a ~€500-level high-end device. September, too, sees both high and low-end devices coming to market, including the ~€550-level "Mint" and the sub-€200 "AFFM".

Of all the new codenames, the one that jumps out to us is "Atlas", a device which, according to the list, will arrive in September. If you'll allow us to engage in some dangerous and unfounded speculation, we'll point out that "Atlas" is the second Sony phone to carry the codename of an ancient Greek deity. The first, as you may remember, was the Xperia Play, which went by the name of Zeus.

Again, this is all well within rumor territory for the time being. The origin of the list is apparently a leaked Indian sales report, from which the prices have been converted into Euros. So don't be surprised if the actual pricing ends up landing either side of the converted figures, assuming they were even correct to begin with. For more, check the full list over at the source link.

Local News: Hospice arranges wedding for terminal cancer patient in just two hours

A 37-YEAR-OLD father of?eight married his sweetheart in a hospice after being given 24?hours to live by doctors.

Sarah Fisher, 35, of Sandycroft Road, Little Chalfont, married cancer patient Barry Fisher, 37, on December 22 in a heart-rending ceremony organised by staff at the Hospice of St Francis, in Berkhamsted. He died on Boxing Day.

Thoughtful hospice staff rushed to find a registrar, bouquets, champagne, food for a buffet, a wedding cake, rings, a suit, cufflinks and a wedding dress. Mr Fisher insisted on battling the pain to walk down the aisle, with the help of his father, in a final act of devotion for his soulmate.

Mrs Fisher told the Examiner this week: ?All our lives were turned upside down. Seeing Barry at the age of 37 deteriorate so much in a short period of time was heart-breaking.?

After going to his doctor with backache, plumber Mr Fisher was diagnosed with secondary bone cancer in July, which he was told was incurable. He began courses of chemotherapy and radiotherapy and had several stays in the Hospice of St Francis for palliative care.

In December Mr Fisher was admitted to Wycombe Hospital for urgent treatment but it became clear his life was ebbing away and he was given 24 hours to live.

On December 22 he was transferred back to the hospice for the third time and within two hours of his arrival, a wedding had been arranged by the staff.

The couple met through mutual friends in March 2008 and became engaged in December 2008 but never got round to organising a wedding.

Mrs Fisher fought back tears as she said: ?Our relationship was perfect. We did have our moments but they were very few and far between.

?I was not expecting to get married when I woke up that morning ? I had no chance to do my hair and make-up.?

Guests assembled, including Mrs Fisher?s four stepdaughters, Mya, seven, Danielle, 11, Paige, 10, and Sophie, 14.

Because of his illness, Mr Fisher needed to use a wheelchair but he defied the pain and shortness of breath to walk down the aisle.

?It did take it out of him,? Mrs Fisher said.

?It was very emotional but it was amazing. I?m really pleased we managed to do it ? I think if we?d left it any longer he would?ve been too weak.

?It was one of the best days of my life. All the staff pulled together and were amazing.

?I?m so grateful to the hospice. Without their help the whole way through, I wouldn?t have been able to do what I did for Barry.?

Mr Fisher had four children from previous relationships, Brenan, Ellie, Louis and Billie as well as his four stepdaughters.

A proud Mrs Fisher paid tribute to her husband: ?He was very fun loving and very energetic. He was always happy and laughing.

?He was like a dad to my girls. We?re all going to miss him so much.?

Jon Huntsman Quits, Reverses Himself, Hides Evidence (ContributorNetwork)

COMMENTARY | Jon Huntsman dropped out of the running for the Republican nominations to run for President against Barack Obama, according to the Boston Herald. Since coming to this decision Huntsman has committed the kind of post-concession flip-flopping that exposes him as just another run-of-the-mill politician.

Huntsman announced his intention to continue the race for the nomination after the New Hampshire primary. He called his surge in that state a "ticket to ride," according to the Washington Post. I feel like he failed to live up to his promises. If a candidate says he is going to fight on, I expect him to make good on the commitment.

Huntsman said, "I don't think you need to run down anyone's reputation to run for president," according to the Los Angeles Times. Despite claims of taking the high road, his campaign produced attack ads, including this one against Ron Paul set to the theme from "The Twilight Zone." I say Huntsman should not have set such lofty goals and then slung mud. It made him look dirty.

Huntsman attacked Romney as a flip-flopper but now endorses the very man he has been attacking for waffling, according to Boston.com. Mr. Huntsman, you should stick to your guns instead of hypocritically backing a political opponent. It makes you appear to lack the courage of your convictions.

The Huntsman campaign is rushing to conceal the evidence that the candidate was not so positive about Romney last week as he is today. The New York Times reports campaign materials and videos critical of Romney are being removed from Huntsman's campaign site and YouTube channel. One missing video, called "Backflip," is an ad attacking Romney for flip-flopping. I can almost picture the digital damage control teams swarming their computers like frenzied bees deleting content as fast as they can click.

I attended Huntsman's rally in Keene, N.H., just before the primary and he painted himself as a vastly different man than his actions are showing him to be. Huntsman has shown he's no more honorable than any checkered-suit wearing huckster.
