COMMENTARY | Jon Huntsman dropped out of the running for the Republican nominations to run for President against Barack Obama, according to the Boston Herald. Since coming to this decision Huntsman has committed the kind of post-concession flip-flopping that exposes him as just another run-of-the-mill politician.
Huntsman announced his intention to continue the race for the nomination after the New Hampshire primary. He called his surge in that state a "ticket to ride," according to the Washington Post. I feel like he failed to live up to his promises. If a candidate says he is going to fight on, I expect him to make good on the commitment.
Huntsman said, "I don't think you need to run down anyone's reputation to run for president," according to the Los Angeles Times. Despite claims of taking the high road, his campaign produced attack ads, including this one against Ron Paul set to the theme from "The Twilight Zone." I say Huntsman should not have set such lofty goals and then slung mud. It made him look dirty.
Huntsman attacked Romney as a flip-flopper but now endorses the very man he has been attacking for waffling, according to Boston.com. Mr. Huntsman, you should stick to your guns instead of hypocritically backing a political opponent. It makes you appear to lack the courage of your convictions.
The Huntsman campaign is rushing to conceal the evidence that the candidate was not so positive about Romney last week as he is today. The New York Times reports campaign materials and videos critical of Romney are being removed from Huntsman's campaign site and YouTube channel. One missing video, called "Backflip," is an ad attacking Romney for flip-flopping. I can almost picture the digital damage control teams swarming their computers like frenzied bees deleting content as fast as they can click.
I attended Huntsman's rally in Keene, N.H., just before the primary and he painted himself as a vastly different man than his actions are showing him to be. Huntsman has shown he's no more honorable than any checkered-suit wearing huckster.
