Android dominating smartphone sales - Know Your Cell

Android is clearly the dominant mobile operating system, as the latest data?from Gartner show that Google's platform accounted for 72.4 percent of all smartphones sold in the third quarter.?

This data doesn't take into account the full impact of the iPhone 5?because it was released at the tail end of the quarter, but even if you're generous, Apple's iconic smartphone still has less than 20 percent of the worldwide market.?

It appears like Samsung is the biggest beneficiary of the boom in Android, as it was the largest vendor of phones for the quarter, thanks to the success of handsets like the Galaxy S3 and the Galaxy Note 2. It also helps that Android is free, so multiple handset vendors can offer it and it can land on super-cheap devices that may sell well in emerging markets.?Android is actually rapidly accelerating its market share, as it only had 52.5 percent of the field at the same point last year. ?

So, it appears as if Android will remain number one in the market and Apple's iOS will be a solid and extremely profitable number two. The interesting thing will be to see who will emerge as the third player. Research In Motion's BlackBerry OS is still in third place as of the third quarter, but many believe Microsoft will be a strong player.?

Microsoft has a puny 2.4 percent of the market for the third quarter but with the release of Windows Phone 8?and many devices, it may be poised to rise. RIM will have its say though, as BlackBerry 10 will be landing in early 2013 and it's already looking pretty good.?
